       She freezes, not because she does not understand -- she has spent too long among a rowdy crowd to be all that fazed by an errant comment or two. But there’s a stark difference between a teasing joke meant to garner attention -- and hesitantly stated truth. So she needs a moment to process before her fingers seek out the waistband of her shorts and -- 

       -- Yes, right there, a sliver of fabric just above them. 

       ❛ -- Oh no. ❜ Her voice doesn’t waver but it’s soft and aggrieved as she flushes, involuntarily, and deftly fixes the hem of her shirt and the band of her shorts. ❛ That’s -- thank you for telling me. ❜ ( the gratitude is real, but she’s no less embarrassed for it. )

       Her expression flickers; for a moment, there is an edge of startled surprise that she does not seem to conceal – her eyelids flutter open wider for a moment and her lips part, almost as if she might say something. But then the shock passes, and in its place is something less easily identifiable. It’s heavy, a little leaden around the edges and a little ancient as well. Quiet, contemplative – but not sad. 

       After a moment, her eyelids slip first to half mast, then closed entirely for a beat as a gentle smile pulls at her lips. When she shakes her head no, it’s not adamant. Just as quiet as everything else. Knowing. 

       ❛ Mm – mm. ❜ Her refusal is a little hum in the back of her throat, confident and sober until she opens her eyes once more and the heaviness isn’t so present – not when her usual airy, sunniness has returned. ❛ I don’t think there’s any reason to. ❜ 

       Maybe they are different; maybe when the two of them look at the dwindling days and the slowly emptying club room, they’re seeing something entirely unique. But they share volleyball, and years of hard work. So Hana guesses that the other might understand. 

       She got to stand on the court for three years. How could that ever be sad? 

       ❛ Thank you, though, Mireia - san. ❜ And then, with a bubbling laugh, she adds, ❛ I suppose this means I should stop waiting around in the gym, right ? ❜
