【 The “Death” Hidden Within the Deck】
The quotation marks are intentional, because strictly speaking, the 10th card of the original *Game of Hope* most likely represents **Father Time** rather than Death itself. However, this image gradually became intertwined with later depictions of the Grim Reaper.
More accurately, the evolution of the **“hourglass + scythe”** symbol can be traced as:
**Cronus/Saturn, the god of harvest → Father Time → the Grim Reaper**
It is, in a way… a rather melancholic symbol.
If you wish to have a card within the deck that clearly points toward **death** (for example, when using the deck as a tool for writing or creative inspiration), this card is actually a very fitting choice. In some situations, it may even represent death more directly than the **Coffin** card.
*The identity represented by this card in the German-suit version remains uncertain (and it is possible that it never had a specific identity at all). However, the current common belief is that the corresponding ♦J represents Hector — the noble, admirable, and heroic figure of the Trojan War. Which, again, feels rather melancholic…*

Echoing Card 35, the final card in The Game of Hope, the last card in The Game of Inspiration—the Safe—also carries a sense of closure.
Both feel weighty and complete.
In Maybe Lenormand, the card depicts an open safe overflowing with money, making wealth the most prominent message in the image.
The Game of Inspiration instead presents a closed safe, concentrating the image’s meaning on privacy, possession, and ownership. The diamond suit symbols in the four corners naturally bring the energy of material concerns into the card as well.
