Project Review

the idea I'm trying to promote in my work at the moment is the effect social media and the digital age effects different generations and has shaped millennials characteristics and traits. i am currently working on an extension of my ‘glitch’ experiments combining old family photos with the photoshop technique of layering and cutting the layers to create a glitch effect, highlighting how much technology has ‘taken over’ and making older technologies obsolete. My project is continuing to move in this direction and i am beginning to plan my outcome along the lines of this theme.

I learnt technical processes to create my glitch effect which took several hours to understand and begin to be bake to experiment with, which made it a longer process than i had originally planned putting me slightly behind on my time plan. i began to work much more efficiently once i had mastered the technique and found that the extra time spent was worth it to achieve more accuracy and generate more experimental pieces helping me move on in my project.

Visually demonstrating how technology has ‘taken over’ and the effects its had on millennials has been difficult as i wanted it to still remain a subtle covert message in my work but still enough to be understood by an audience, by introducing old photographs with the contrast of the glitch technique and old film images it creates a much clearer narrative. i have also evaluated each experiment with my evaluation and notes explaining the narrative behind them.

My work will be used for fine art purposes for example presented in a gallery setting, online or in a modern zine. the intended audience hat will consume my work is very wide as it would be suitable and understood by a wide age range however I am interested in creating this work for millennials that can themselves relate to it but also how baby boomers and previous generations interpret the message behind it, either agreeing or disagreeing with my beliefs around the millennial generation.

Project Review.

In review of my project so far, i believe that i am doing a sufficient amount of work to progress at the correct rate throughout my project, however if i want to continue being ambitious in creating more experiments i need to work faster and be more productive on weekends.

My proposal and artist research is thorough and specific, highlighting practical techniques and millennial facts and stereotypes, my primary research reflects this well, that i can combine to create interesting practical experiments. Next i need to further into new post production techniques such as glitch art to refine my work. I also need to make sure I highlight how my context is relevant to my project and pathway which i have begun to do in my practical works evaluations.

I began to problem solve in my initial idea generation when deciding which proposal to go forward with and carried this on into my practical work, developing each experiment into the next, however i want to continue with furthering ideas from each experiment to secure this. Several of my experiments have started to produce a strong context that i would like to continue developing, such as the idea of the digital age having a great impact on different generations.

In order to keep my project structured and organised i have created a time plan of AM and PM of the final major project so far, i need to continue doing this to keep my target moving along and on target to be resolved to the deadline.

Everything so far produced in the project has been presented and evaluated in my sketchbook, however i do need to start making more informal/scruffy notes to show my thought process more clearly an continue updating tumblr with my projects progress.

Seung-Hwan Oh Fuses Art with Microbiology in Bacteria Manipulated Photographs. His intention is to explore the impermanence of matter as well as the material limitations of photography. His series “Impermanence,” reminds us we have an expiration date. It’s an interesting approach to photography that takes a normally still medium and adds a dimension of something active, live, and dynamic. Art is naturally created to be consumed, in this case, the art itself is the act of consumption, the parts of the photographs that have been literally eaten away by the bacteria’s force of nature. His main inspiration is humanity: its tendency for presenting itself with class, religion, race, and the resulting precariousness and cruelty. In each frame, he seizes a speck of his subject’s life and sacrifices it, telling the story of how humanity has constricted and confined them.

Rosanna Jones

Rosanna Jones is a fashion photographer and mixed media image maker. Her work specialises in an experimental blend of art, illustration and fashion photography. She creates and captures a beautiful moment and then destroys the innocence and aesthetic beauty of the image. Her works are still striking and inspiring. Scratching away, or bleaching photographs is a way that Rosanna can relate to her images on a higher level; each scratch, tear or bleach mark symbolises how both society and the human mind have the power to destroy the most beautiful moments of our life. Jones began investigating how the face many of us present publicly ends up being the front which conceals our true nature from ourselves. This perspective is particularly poignant for a fashion photographer, who no doubt has seen first-hand an industry which is quite openly based on hiding and disguising imperfections.

Pierre Debusschere

Pierre Debusschere is a multidisciplinary photographer and curator that utilizes innovative technologies to create high impact visuals. With his talent in post-production, he can portray what is beyond the models and concepts surface, conferring the images with unreality that, at the same time, grants them with more veracity. The mass amounts of different post production manipulation techniques Debusschere uses are very inspiring to me especially his digital colour strikes and double exposures.
