After the large June surf the crab beds are dispersed and finding crabs to bait fish has been difficult. Have you seen this before and will the crabs regroup into large beds if we have small surf conditions? Tight lines🤙🏼🫘🎣

Honestly I have never thought about this or seen large surf have a effect to the location or size of the crab beds.

It’s been a while but tides lined up with my errands and I gave it a go.

The tide dropped and the Vina showed up like clock work.

Hooked four and landed three.

Also one consolation short Halibut.

I fished this Marabou intruder… Easy tie, flys through the air and great swimming action!

Thanks for all the helpful info on this tumbler page! And it's very inspirational! I have some questions I am hoping you can answer as I just got a great price on a switch rod - GLoomis 4111 imx pro V2 4wt which is a tad shorter from what you have. (Found your site from searching the rod and SoCal sight casting.) This is my first switch/spey rod and primary goal is for halibut and further blind casting of structures on socal beaches but want to have the flexibility to use for sight casting Corbina. Every time I read up and think I understand skagit and scandi stuff I quickly find myself confused. I see some of your setups for halibut with your different rods, but didnt see too much specific to Corbina.

For a Corbina setup, are you set on shooting heads that are floating or int/sink? I see more floating shooting heads (like OPST Commando) than int/sink but not sure if that is a big factor with sink tips regardless? And are you use a floating or intermediate running line - thought about starting off with an integrated skagit line but they are usually floating. But also not sure if I should focus more on a scandi line for this rod and Corbina.

Just trying to find a good setup or setups with this rod for Corbina. It would great if you spelled which brand and type lines/heads and weights I should try as a good starting point ;) I am very confused at this point.

Ha, yes this is a large can of worms you are digging into.

Honestly for practical fishing a Skagit head with a sink tip is going to be more practical than a Scandi line but ideally you should have both lines. For reference on my 4wt IMX pro I fish a 275 Skagit head with a 64 grain sink tip and that combo works great. YMMV 🙂

I’ve used both Scandi and Skagit for Corbina it’s a matter of using different approaches but both will work. Half the time you’re just fishing the leader in the skinny water. It really comes down with which line you grow confident with.

Scientific Anglers trout Spey lines are my favorite Scandi and Airflows Skagit Scout is my favorite for Skagit heads.

In general you add 30 grains to a Scandi head to get your Skagit head weight.

But check with Loomis for line pairings with that rod.

Hi Jon, From your two hander experience, if you were to recommend a two hander for overhead casting beaches and estuaries, for halibut, WSB, etc., what would you suggest? I'm not looking for a specific brand of rod (but I am happy to hear if you have one or two in mind), but more about the length, grain weight and fly lines, heads. Distance is important to me, but ease of casting clousers up to 2/0 more so. A bad elbow (tennis elbow) is making casting single handed, heavier rods a chore. This setup would be strictly for my heavier work. I have a couple of single hander 6 weights for BSP, corbina, etc.

I don’t really have any personal experience with two handed rods specifically for overhead casting.

Echo has two handed beach rods designed for what you have in mind.

Most rods designated as switch rods usually have a taper more suited for overhead casting as well.

Line pairing is even trickier without knowing the exact rod. Manufacturers are pretty good at having a chart to match rods with heads for two handed casting.

I have not been out much this year.

I’ve been running a lot this season. The beach I like to surf and run at are not the same I like to chase Beans at.

Last season I had fair amount of Bean time because I was surfing at a good Corbina spot.

I did get out offshore last week and we found a area of schoolie Bluefin tuna that ate the poppers. We limited out easily and we did some catch and release on them as well.
