CAINE THOMPSON:
“Right now? Right now, I’m looking through some different client files, seeing what I can do to help,” he responds, knowing nothing was truly off the record. Blue eyes move from the files to the woman, looking to see what more she really wanted. Everyone already knew that he’d been brought to town to help Reina by this point, small town and news traveled fast apparently. “I’ve got a divorce on my books, I’ve got two people looking for someone, and I’ve got a few other things,” he shrugs. “Nothing out of the ordinary unless you’re trying to stop the divorce thing.”
Loretta sighs, rolling her eyes as she leans back in the chair she’s sitting. She’s tired of playing it subtle, of being slow and steady. But she has her orders, and rationally, she has nothing to pin on anyone. All she has is the knowledge that Caine Thompson works for the people she’s trying to bring down, and somehow, he still tries to act like a good person. And yes, Lori knows people aren’t black or white, and there are nuances to consider. But when she’s frustrated, and at her wits’ ends? She’s truly going to dive head first into things. “Sounds interesting. Missing persons case? Sounds like a job for the Sheriff’s office, no? I’m not really....interested about the divorce, but do tell. Is it The Herberts? Jo Anna came over the other week, telling my wife and I about how she was considering it. And as far as I can say, off the record of course, that marriage wasn’t going to last too long, you know? It’s like married people ESP. You’re not married, right Thompson?”
SASHA RAMSEY:
“Oh please, I don’t even want to think about that,” Sasha said as she scrunched her nose at the idea that Loretta gave her. She was - in this case - unfortunately blessed with the ability to think in pictures and this was not a pleasant picture. “Please tell me that the puppy is a cute one so it is worth it.”
“Oh, Rosie is apparently very pretty, according to Williams’ observation. You wanna see a picture? Here she is!” Taking the picture out with a flourish on her phone, she shows it to Sasha, almost as if she hopes that the latter would agree that the dog looks more like a hellhound than a cutie. “Chihuahuas are a hit or a miss, and please do not quote me on that.”
HARLOW MIKAELS:
“Sounds like a nice dog,” Harlow said with a nod because she didn’t have much else to say about it. While she did love animals, she hadn’t had any in many years. “At least she got the height. I had heard somewhere that mixed dogs are always better to have because they cancel out some diseases and problems that some pure breads can have. Not sure if it’s the truth.”
“I’m no expert at dog breeding, but that should make sense in the realms of science. Are you a dog person too?” Pet ownership is a topic that Loretta is passionate about, outside of her job and her wife of course. “They can be quite the handful, but their loyalty is really untested. But you could say the same about cats too. I’ve never personally owned one, but I knew people who did, and they’re adorable. And very territorial, but that’s admirable, I suppose.”
MALCOLM WILLIAMS:
He gave her a nod, intrigued in what in God’s name this dog looked like. “What are you talking about being in the eye of the beholder?” He asked as he squinted at the photo. “This dog’s cute. Kinda looks like one of the k-9s. What’s her name?”
“I...don’t worry about it.” Loretta is not about to call her auntie’s dog an ugly little thing in front of a co-worker. “Her name is Rosie, and according to Auntie Sol, that’s what she wanted my mom to name me. I wish she wouldn’t have told me that, because now I cannot stop looking at Rosie and thinking she usurped my almost name. It’s a whole thing, like that time you came over for Uncle Eddie’s birthday, remember?”

“What is it about killers– that they want to be caught so badly… or like they want to get as close to being caught without being caught?” Lori closes the file with a swift motion, sighing as she shakes her head.
RHYS BISHOP:
“Be my guest,” the words spoken as he steps back, lifting one hand to indicate the engine compartment. “Doubt you could do anymore damage.” There’s a hint of bitterness in his tone, Rhys wondering why he’d even let his father talk him into taking the damn thing. But his attention is piqued with her words, and tone of voice. “Not a fan of the shop?”
Loretta has never had a particular affinity for cars, but basic survival in the desert did a good teacher make. And spite is a good motivator, as she tries to avoid the Thane Autoshop as far as she can throw them. She’s already under the hood, seeing the problem right before her. “Mmm, it’s the gasket. Well, we’re shit outta luck ‘cause I don’t have my roadside assistance kit on me, sent it for maintenance yesterday mornin’ actually, and no toolkit either. Well, here’s what we can do...” Wiping her hands on her pants, “I could drive ya into town and you can go talk to ‘em yourself. Or we could wait for Triple A to come by and collect your car. As for the shop, it’s good for Olympus’s economy, who wouldn’t be a fan?” Again, she’s not the biggest fan of this place. “I can stick around, if you’d like. Or I could send a deputy here. I’m Loretta. Loretta Machado, chief deputy. And you are?”

“Nothing says coffee like eight in the morning, am I right?” Loretta took a sip of the freshly poured, still steaming coffee, closing her eyes to savour the taste. “Nothing beats this taste, I’ll tell ya that. The station needs better coffee, but no one wants to make that run unless they have to.” A pause, “...myself included.”

“Why do the freshmen seem to be getting smaller and smaller every year? Their backpacks are bigger than them.” Loretta observed as she waiting in front of the school. It was usually her wife who came to pick up her nieces and nephews, but the Deputy decided to volunteer in her place instead. “I hear they keep increasing the number of books in their syllabus. Remember back when all we needed to carry were notebooks and our pencil cases? Simpler times, am I right?”
ANDY THANE:
Brows furrow, leaving Andy genuinely wondering if Machado was drunk or high a variation of both. He didn’t make a habit of befriending people from the Sheriffs Department — Especially not ones who would love to see him behind bars. “Cause I don’t fuckin’ like you?” Andy answers simply, as if it’s as obvious as the sky being blue. Eyes roll as she continues, knowing he shouldn’t pick a fight — But fuck, she was annoying. “Yeah, yeah – I’m sure.”
“...well, I do appreciate your honesty, Mister Thane. Just so we’re clear, the feeling is mutual on both ends.” Maybe she really doesn’t have to disguise this with banter, since the two of them are very well aware of where they actually stand with each other. “I’m just doing rounds of the community, seeing if there’s any...trouble around these parts. You know, just general things. Like petty theft, or things coming and going that shouldn’t belong. Just routine stuff. Now that I am here though, maybe I will take a look around. If I can, of course?” There is that weight of knowledge in her words, and as nice as she may sound, there is no mistaking the look in her eyes, that Lori is here again, to barge through the doors and hope she catches them by surprise.
GISELE RAMIREZ:
“Is that so? What kind of dog do you have, if you don’t mind me asking Chief?” mused Gisele with a lighthearted laugh. “Even though I can’t picture it, I can’t help but think that perhaps they’d be cute!” Then again she probably thought every dog was cute and that’s her biased opinion seeing as she can’t bring herself to describe them negatively. “Awww Chico! Well let’s hope they found a new home y’know? I think that’s what matters most.”
“Oh, I don’t mind talking about Bruno at all! Actually, my wife found him through her special channels. And this was back when we were dating, so like....five years ago, I think?” Meeting her wife, and finally getting her life on track was the success story that Lori never thought she’d have. She’s taking her phone out, to show Gisele pictures of Bruno; from his puppy days, to his current stature. “Obviously, he’s grown older but he’s still my baby. And of course, he’s got sisters and a brother, because the missus and I cannot stop adopting animals. Here’s Lilah, and Rufus annoying the heck out of Bruno. And there’s Missy, she’s the real princess in this house.” Lori pointed to the dogs in the group picture, the only one she has ever taken of the dogs while they’re well behaved. Nodding in agreement, “Me too. They’re lovely puppies, and I hope they find joy and stuff, you know?”
everything you know is changing, but it’ll pass
HARLOW MIKAELS:
“I don’t even want to think about it.” Harlow said with a wrinkle of her nose. It was an odd conversation to have but she had a dire need to google a picture of this creature. “Was it small or a little bigger than a teacup?”
“The puppy, or her mother? I’ll go with the former, because she grew up pretty nice. It was after all, my auntie’s dog. Guess I did bury the lead there, huh?” Loretta was never one to open about her family, even though her auntie and uncle lived here, and it wasn’t too far a stretch to the find the Machado residence, if people really tried. “She surpassed her mother, got her daddy’s height. But she runs like a demon and digs up holes at random times in the night for no reasons, so I guess she is...more than a teacup of worth.”
