Mila nodded a little. "I know I can trust you."

Kip sighed, the psychologist in him was kicking in but the last thing she needed was the situation psycho-analyzed. “Some people are messed up, but now you’re with your real family. How are they to you? Good people I hope?”

"They... They're sweet. I have three siblings now, so that's interesting. It's just weird to think that I have a family I know almost nothing about. I lost eighteen years of my life, really. That's hard to digest."

He sighed quietly, a hand ghosting up and down her back in that familiar way he used to. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Mila Chen, welcome to New London”, he whispered. He had no idea how to react to this, how to react to any of it. All he knew was that someone he cared about never deserved this.

Mila took another deep breath and shook her head. "I just... It's so weird, you know? She was my best friend and now it's like... Who even was this woman? How could she look me in the eye every day and tell me she loved me when the whole thing was a lie?"

“That’s definitely the best choice,” he nodded, a small smile on his lips. “So did anything exciting happen since I last saw you? I know it’s been awhile— a few months, at least.”

"Um... Yes? It's quite the story, though... Definitely a long one."

Kip stopped in his tracks, staring down at her with wide eyes. That was something he had never expected to hear. He couldn’t form a thought or even a coherent sentence for a few seconds. “So…so who are you?”, he asked softly, drawing this girl he knew so well but suddenly felt like a stranger, into his arms for a tight hug.

The girl wrapped her arms back around Kip, resting her cheek against his chest as she took a deep breath. "Mila Chen... Daughter of an English teacher and a lawyer..." She went quiet, closing her eyes and shaking her head a little.

"Likewise, well besides Amelia, but what are you doing here?", he asked, his eyebrows drawing together in a look of confusion.

Mila let out a soft sigh, shaking her head a little. "I can't even think of where to start..." Tucking her hands into her pockets, she swallowed hard and bit her lower lip. "I... Last month I was arrested with a few of my friends because we were acting like idiots... It was no big deal, though, right? They just put us in a holding cell for the night... Everyone else got released except for me. After a couple hours they sat me down and they... Well, they told me that my mom wasn't my mom. My real family is from here."

“Family, ah— I see! Well, if you ever need a tour of this place, don’t ask me. It’s a little different than a French college campus,” he laughed lightly.

"Ah, yes... I believe I'll be asking my sister for that one, most likely," she said with a smile.

Mila brushed her fingers through her dark curls and smiled softly. "It's good to see you too, Kip. I hadn't expected to know anyone here..."
