Why do we keep buying clothes? Even if it’s previously worn why do we feel the urge to have more in the closet? Curious to know your take I’m not hating or throwing shade
from my perspective, i wouldn't say it's truly an urge, because i don't impulsively buy things.. but, i would say that i do buy a lot of things. and it's really infrequent that i regret what i've bought.
i have a mental list of improvements to my space and changes i'd like to make to my wardrobe, which often results in me selling what i no longer wear or use. my watchlists on my favorite sites are extensive, with saved searches for what i really want and in general, i browse often, finding new things that resonate with me.
i have two tiny closets and a hanging rack, so i am very limited. one closet is for all the basic ts and undergarments, the other is storage for linens, books, taper candles, and my laundry bin. the hanging rack has maybe 50 items on it.
if i were to assess why the general 'people' buys lots of clothes, it's probably because it feels too daunting to spend over a certain amount for fit and quality, or if it requires adjustments or constant upkeep. it seems easier to go to the thrift, grab a bunch of clothes that might work, and then maybe you have one of two items you actually like. that statement is kind of reductive, and maybe isn't the case that often even.
overall, collecting is kind of a rite of passage, and it often provides people with a sense of identity and/or a sense of ease, be it helpful or not. you have a space? you fill it up.
idk, maybe we fear emptiness. maybe it's not that deep. i think things move around so fast and it's nice we can gather them and it's also nice when we purge them, but at the same time, everything we do that centers consumerism harasses the earth, which is sad.
