Oliver rolled his eyes but there was no point in arguing with Louise. It was almost like deja vu, he felt like he had gone down this path with her â or maybe it was another redhead. âIâm not drunk, please.â He scoffed and finally took that glass of water and taking a few drinks out of it. âWhy do you care so much, Lou? Are you in love with me or something?â He smirked, trying to push her buttons. Maybe drunk Oliver was spilling the truth and saying it how he felt it was, but it wasnât like the two got together and talked like friends. They had hooked up once and casually spoke to each other, that was all.
âYouâre drunk,â Lou said firmly, rolling her own eyes before giving him a side glance, waiting for him to drink the water. When he finally took a couple sips of it, she gave him a satisfied smile. Oliver was probably right. It wasnât normal for people to be friends with someone theyâve hooked up with. Well, according to straight people that wasnât normal. And yet, she liked him enough as a person to not be against the idea of being friends. Besides, there was something in eyes that made her stay put and make sure he got safely home. âOr something sounds about right.â She replied as she paid for both of their drinks. Trying to ignore how his smirk annoyed her, Lou got up and grabbed her jacket. âLetâs go before you start auditioning to be a Coyote Ugly.âÂ

âYes,â she confirmed. Her main concern regarding New Yearâs Eve with just Louise wasnât the redheadâs astonishing beauty but the fear of the two of them not having anything in commonâ so what could they even talk about? Fortunately, her fear disappeared quickly and from there itâd be easier for Scar, she could see herself relaxing soon. âSee, Iâm more of a wine gal myself but I like to chill with a good craft beer from time to time,â she thought for a moment. âThere was a time, between 2003 and 2007 when I was nothing but a wild and reckless youngster and all about cheap wine and awful beer.â It all seemed so long ago (even though it technically wasnât) so Scarlett felt comfortable enough making fun of her younger self. The hostess grabbed two glasses (Marcus would sure as hell have to grab his own when he decided to show up) and two bottles of wine, for starters. âIâm afraid all this food is just for the three of us,â she said with a nervous chuckle, for some reason she felt slightly embarrassed as well. Her husbandâd made the decision himself, yet they were one in the eyes of the world so she had to carry some of the blame as well. âLetâs move this party into the living room?â She briefly glanced at Louise, waiting for confirmation. Scar called it a living room but it was more of a living area. A vast space of their recently redecorated home. Luckily it had so much unnecessary furniture lying around and art pieces covering bare walls, otherwise they would have echo as their third tenant. Anyway, she handed over the glasses and wine to the housekeeper who would take them to the living room, while Scarlett grabbed one tray which she gave to Louise and the other she kept so they could put food on it. âIf you see something you like, take it. âUgh, everything looks delicious,â thinking out loud she walked around the table. If anything made Scarlett truly happy nowadays, it was art and anything related to it. The thought itself made her giggly. âShe can stop by whenever she wants! God, Iâd be happy to talk to her about it! Thereâs so much to say about abstract expressionism and to be honest, not many dare dabble in it,â she told Louise, proud to share her knowledge before she continued, challenging her. âWhich one did she tell you about? Do you think you could describe it?â
As they stood together, Lou realized that there hadnât been a moment up until then where theyâve been alone together. Usually, Marcus was always around who managed to guide the conversation to whatever he seemed to like. And even when Louâs mom would drag her to Scarlettâs art gallery, she would stand quietly aside, while they would both chatter away. âI would have liked to have met her,â She smiled fondly, really meaning what she said. âWere you in Portland at that time? We could have bumped into each other back then. But then again, I think would have remembered you if we did.â Giving Scarlett a nod as she reached for the tray, Lou had to smile at Scarlettâs reaction to the food. She was right about the food looking so delicious, it was making Lou salivate just by looking at it. As she followed Scarlett into the living room, her eyes carelessly drifted to her backside. Damn. Lost in admiring Scarlettâs ass, Lou wouldnât have registered her question if she hadnât forced her attention back to what Scarlett had been saying. While her mother was the artist of the family, Lou was lost in the technicality of what made something a piece of art. Sure, the Sistine Chapel was pretty impressive, but once you got into modern art, it all started to look the same to her. âWell, I can try.â She said carefully as she settled down on the couch, wishing she had paid more attention to what her mother had said and kept her eyes strictly on Scarlettâs face. âShe said something about how the assimilation of color and lines blurred, giving the impression that there are layers upon layers of intimacy.â Even though she had merely repeated what her mother had said, she felt the rush of warmth on her face, feeling like a complete idiot. The thought that she had said something completely stupid about something that Scarlett was an expert in was enough for her to add, âIt looked like a kindergartenerâs splatters. Mom says I never gave my artistic eye a chance. Too much of a wild heathen, I suppose.â

âHey hey hey!â Oliver protested when his glass of alcohol was moved away from him and a glass of water in front of him instead. âI was fine with my rum why did you bring me this?â He pushed away the glass of water then grabbed the bartenderâs attention to bring him another glass of rum. Why was he even drinking rum? He had never been a rum guy. âBud?â He scoffed. âWeâre not really friends. Letâs be real, Lou.â
âDrink it. Youâll thank me tomorrow.â Lou pushed the glass of water back as she gave a sharp look at the bartender. There was no way she was going to let him continue to drink himself to death. âOllie, are you okay? Youâre really drunk, I donât think you should keep drinking.â She said gently, a concerned frown growing on her face. At his comment, Lou raised her brow in surprise. She had considered Oliver to be her friend and had assumed he had thought of her as a friend too. A pang of disappointment hit her as she forced a smile. âWeâre not? Huh, guess I should return the best friend bracelets I got for us to wear.â She responded with a deadpan expression, before taking the last sip of her beer.Â

âOn a scale from, âI can sometimes make important phone calls without cryingâ to âI have a stable job with a steady income, a spouse who loves me, a dog, and two kids who are screwed up minimally at worstâ, how much of an adult are you?â He asked, stumbling on some of his words as he was deep into the drinking already but still asked his question nonetheless. For some reason he thought he didnât have his shit together so asking other adults how much of adults they were seemed like a good idea.Â
âIâm barely a functional adult and I probably wonât ever get married,â Lou answered truthfully as she reached for his glass and moved it away from him. âCan I have some water for my friend?â She asked the bartender who nodded his head as he grabbed a cup of water for him. âDrink the water, bud.â She smiled encouragingly as she slid the water towards him. Lou didnât like how drunk Ollie looked and thought it was better to step in before he drunk himself to death. âBut I still hate making important calls. Alright, how about we get you home, friend?â
She had always wanted words, she loved them; grew up on them. Words gave her clarity, brought reason, shape.

Scarlett pulled back from the hug surprisingly quickly and clasped her hands together, trying to remember what she was supposed to do next, what Marcus would do next. Louise in fact helped her as she gestured to the wine bottle in her hands. The brunette glanced at the label, wiggling her nose once it hit her Louiseâs fragrance still lingered in her nostrils. True, the wine wasnât as expensive or exclusive as any of the fine wines in Marcusâ private collection, but⌠âOh, I like this one! Itâs sweet, yet has a spicy aroma.â Priding herself in recognizing the wine, her gaze immediately snapped up to Louise. âDonât worry, at least I had enough time to add some finishing touches,â and freak out. âCome on in,â the hostess led her guest to the dining roomâ at the same time she fixed her messy bangs lightly before they fell on her face again, checking her reflection in the glass door to make sure she looked her best for Marcusâ friend. Once Louise mentioned her mother, a smile so bright appeared on Scarlettâs features that it almost overshadowed the lavish chandeliers beaming down on them. âAnd how is Olivia?â Scarlett asked, genuine interest sparking in her eyes. âMarcus should be here soon,â not a complete lie since she actually didnât know when he would be there. âHeâs⌠Working.â The woman cleared her throat to rid herself of the disappointed note in her voice. She averted her gaze as well, and it traveled over the long table covered with foodâ a feast for thirty, not three peopleâit was a Marcusâ way of showing how much he respected Louise, however Scarlett couldnât help but have some doubts about it. Surely there was a better way to show someone you cared about them? â⌠I hope youâre hungry.â
There was a twinge of disappointment when Scarlett pulled away from her, but she shoved it way. Scarlett was her friendâs wife and yet she couldnât help to wonder how on earth did he convince her to marry him. It couldnât have been the money. She didnât seem like a golddigger. Not with how easy she was, with the adorable way she tried to tame the messy waves of her hair and yet she didnât make too much fuss about it. It made her prettier. âDo you?â Lou gave a sigh of relief as she smiled. When she had picked out the wine, she just picked the one that was recommended to by the Bevmo! employee, not caring if  Marcus liked it or not. But now standing in front of Scarlett as she offered the wine bottle to her, Lou hoped it would be good enough. âIâm glad, Iâm awful at picking wine. Normally, Iâd just pick up a pack of beer and call it a day. But I have a feeling Marcus isnât a beer man.â Her mom loved Scarlett. Actually, it was more of an adoration that she had for Mrs. Lindel. They both had an appreciation for art and while Olivia was merely an art teacher for elementary children, Lou appreciated that Scarlett listened attentively to her motherâs opinions on the art that hung in her gallery. âWell, she went on and on about a new piece in your gallery. I tried to follow what she was saying but Iâm an uncultured brute. But from what I can remember, she would like to visit and talk about abstract expressionism.â She wrinkled her nose, unsure if she had said the right term. At the sight of the large table of food, Lou couldnât help to further wrinkle her brow, but this time in dislike. âWow... are we expecting more people? It looks like we can feed Peterâs family and his cousins.â She hated Marcusâ extravagance attempts to appear as a good host. Sure, it was kind of him to share so much luxury with her, but sometimes she wondered if he was merely showing off to her. âStarving,â She replied with a forced smile, seeing that not only did Marcus make an ass out himself by preparing such an extravagant meal, but he didnât bother to show up for it. With a glance at Scarlett, Lou was sure she was disappointed to share the New Year with her than with her own husband. And while she had planned on leaving early that night, she made up her mind then and there, that she was going to stay as long as Scarlett wanted her to stay. âItâs a shame Marcus had to work tonight. But doesnât mean we canât have fun tonight. What do you say? Do you want to get drunk and pig out with me?â

A grin lit up his face as she started firing all those random facts at him. âSo you were a dinosaur nerd too, huh?â When she wondered about dinosaurs tasting like chicken, James said that obviously they did, because otherwise, âHow do you explain dino-nuggets?â Check-mate, atheists! Keeping his distance from the animals, James watched with a sort of fascination at the way Lou was handling them. Like she had been doing stuff like this her whole life. âYeah. Yeah, it is,â he admitted, stepping away from one of the chickens when it came to peck near his shoe. âI donât really know what to do, here. I donât want to upset them or anything.â Or have them attack him, but he left that part unsaid. âHow about for myself? I donât have anyone here, my familyâs out of state.â Watching her sort the flowers for a moment, James then asked, âDid you pick those yourself?â
âI like to describe myself as a dinosaur enthusiast, actually.â She smiled, wondering when was the last time she had a fun conversation about dinosaurs. Nowadays, if she ever wanted to have a fun conversation about dinosaurs, sheâd have to talk to a five-year-old. âDino-nuggets? You mean chicken nuggets in the shape of dinosaurs? Those actually exist?â Well, that was going on her grocery list for tomorrow, she thought to herself. Growing up, her parents never had any sort of processed food in the house, which was why she never even heard of dino-nuggets. It sounded disgusting, she bet they tasted amazing. Pressing her lips together, the corners of her mouth turned up despite her attempt to hide her smile. There was something so amusing, yet endearing of watching a grown man inch away from a docile hen. âTheyâre just as scared of you as you are of them.â She said gently, waving Annie Yolkley away from her flowers before she pecked the petals off of each steam. âProbably more. Youâre bigger than them and they know not to mess with you.â As she bundled up a large bouquet for him, she stood up, tying the stems with a string from her pocket. âYou moved to Portland on your own? Thatâs a gutsy move. I bet your mother misses you.â She said, thinking of her own who demanded her daughters see her whenever they could. âThere, for you.â She held out the flowers to him. Nodding at his question, she gestured to the hydrangeas and birds of paradises that were under her kitchen window. âGardening helps me relax. I donât have as green of thumb as my dad, but I suppose I do alright.â

âDammit,â Scarlett muttered under breath as her call went straight to voicemail, once again. The woman didnât even feel bad about cussingâ a bad habit she was trying to rid herself of ever since Marcusâd made it clear he didnât like it. It was alright though, since he wasnât there. Her husband was at some banquet. Despite the promise he would spend the New Yearâs Eve with herâ his familyâ and his beloved friend, Louise. Scarlett came to a sudden halt. A shaky breath escaped her, the thought of being alone with the beautiful redhead strangely enough made her nervous. Scarlett wasnât her friend, she wasnât even sure the other woman liked her because Marcusâ wife wasnât as well-mannered or well-spoken as him, no matter how much sheâd learned over the two years of marriage observing him.The doorman walked in and interrupted her train of thoughts, informing her the guest had arrived. Scarlett nodded in response but was internally screaming, frantically looking aroundâ didnât know where to sit, where to stand, what to do with her hands. By the time he led Louise into the room, her heart was beating like crazy. âHi!â Instead of polite Good evening. âIâve been waiting for you!â Instead of Welcome to our home. The third mistake Scarlettâd made right away was going in for a rushed hug.
Marcus was a lucky man. Well, there wasnât any other word that Lou could think of that would best describe her friend. Was he her friend? Sometimes she didnât quite know. Sure, he liked to invite her to his house parties and sometimes theyâd have lunch together. But they were both different kinds of people, with different experiences of the world. It was difficult at times to explain that to him. Carrying a bottle of wine in her hand, she made to the Lindelâs front door and knocked, waiting for the doorman to answer the door. That was one thing Marcus had that Lou didnât have. âHappy New Yearâs, Peter.â She greeted him with a smile at him when he opened the door for her. As they made small talk, Lou asking after his wife and kids, she followed him through the large house, occasionally smoothing her hair back and hoping she was well-dressed for the occasion. When she entered the room, Louâs stomach do a when her eyes laid on Scarlett. A gorgeous woman, to say the least, she was a breath of fresh air and Marcusâ wife. That was another thing Marcus had that Lou wish she had. A wife to come home to and dote on. âScarlett,â She had only managed to say before she found herself being pulled into a tight hug. âHello to you too!â Lou chuckled softly, wrapped her arms around Scarlettâs waist. A soft pleased smile at how delighted Scarlett was to see her, she felt the glow of a blush on her face. âSorry I took so long. I needed to stop by and help Olivia take out her Christmas tree.â She explained, hoping Scarlett would understand that she had needed to help her mom. Then she held up the bottle of wine, still holding Scarlett around her waist. âBut I bought wine. It's probably shit compared to everything that Marcus has, but itâll get the job done.â
detectivenoahfoxâ:
The more drugs that were found in the city, the more it worried him as a father than anything else. Noah had been to the national park with his girls hundreds of times before, and there had been a damn meth lab under his nose the entire time. He was surprised to get the call, and accepted the job straight away. When it was something that could affect his girls, heâd take it in a heartbeat. Well, maybe not in a heartbeat; the last job that affected his girls was because their mother died. This was just a simple drug investigation, wasnât it?
It didnât take long to get to the national park, and he told somebody who he was, who then disappeared to get the correct person â Officer Parker. An ironic name, he thought to himself (a joke he was sure only he would really appreciate. It was a bit of a stretch, after all).
âOfficer Parker,â Noah acknowledged, shaking the womanâs hand. He glanced down at his shoes too, and regretted wearing the size 10 Oxfords on his feet. Maybe he shouldâve come better equipped. âNot at all, I come here a lot with my girls.â He smiled. Granted, he wasnât wearing his work shoes when he came on the weekend. âLead the way.â
Noah let Officer Parker lead, following by her side as they walked. âSo this was found earlier this morning?â He asked, taking his glasses from his inside jacket pocket and placing them on.
âHonestly, you can just call me Lou.â She added with a smile. When he reassured that he would be fine, she decided to not point out that Oxford shoes were not meant for hiking. In fact, he was sure to get blisters. However, she found sometimes it was better to let men experience things first hand. âGlad to hear youâve been here before. That makes things a bit easier to explain.â As she began to lead the way, she wondered how often he and his daughters come to the park. Afterall, sheâs never seen him before. âYour girls, do they like coming to the park?â
âThatâs right.â She nodded at his question. âThey must have had their operation for some time now. Normally weâre better at keeping track on the conditions of our cabins, but with the forest fires weâve been stretched thin.â Lou explained before gesturing at a dip on the trail so the detective can watch his bearings. While she hadnât had much interaction with law enforcement, she knew enough to know that sometimes they werenât so sure-footed as they thought they were and didnât want her only help to fall flat on his face. âFrom the looks of their operations, Iâd say this isnât their first rodeo. They got at least five propane tanks, still all the way full. Which means they planned on coming back.â Lou said with an air of confidence before quickly adding, âBut thatâs just my humble observation. Iâm hoping you can fill in the blanks. Find out whose meth lab it is, itâll help me keep my park clean.â
lyssawynnâ:
How they loved the bitterness that struck Louâs voice when she spoke - it made their laughter lines deepen as they enjoyed the show that was playing in front of them. The brunette had come closer, resting a freckled hand on their ex-wifeâs bare shoulder. Freckles combining like a never-ending puzzle, heir hand softly squeezed harder when she was getting fiercer. However they supported her all the way - they couldnât afford to cause a scene, their passive-aggressive buttons had already been pressed. If he hadnât backed up, like he did now, they wouldâve been sure they wouldâve lashed out. ââI do,ââ they spat back to the nail-comment. Snarling it almost, ââI donât mind breaking a nail if it means itâll remind you for the rest of your pathetic life you touched my wife without consent.ââ For some reason it felt so good - both relieving and fulfilling to speak those words as if the redhead was really their partner. And they managed to suck in a breath when he left - though bitterly so. It was when Lou brought up they must have a date to return to somewhere - Alyssaâs heart stopped beating for a solid second, which felt like an eternity, as all color drained from their cheeks. The redhead must have a date, of course she had. And that realization made them look away and gulp, feeling like a fool for even helping her. For having felt special for a few minutes - to be called wife. A word they hadnât heard in years. This was nothing more than just a coincidental meeting, one that would be brushed off as an accident - they were sure of it. Lou wanted nothing to do with them, why would she even? They had been failure to her years ago, so why would today be any different? It got them to take a few steps away from the redhead â almost giving into the urge to walk away and let their case rest, forget about their ex-wife and down a bottle of whiskey once they arrived back home. But it was a small voice in the back of their head that made them turn on their heel and find Louâs blue eyes, a small sting of tenderness striking their heart as they parted their red stained lips. ââI never stopped loving you, you know.ââ The words left their lips loud enough for only Lou to hear, as their eyes teared up, doing something they never did in public; showing weakness. As Lou had always been the one and only that had managed to truly make her way into their heart.
Lou had to admit, having Lyssaâs hand on her shoulder reminded her what it was like to have someone on her side. To know if she wanted to crush this manâs assets, she would have someone supporting her all the way. Sure, it would probably get her jail time, but she had a feeling that the satisfaction of seeing his panic face would be worth it. When Lyssa snarled back at the man, instinctively, Lou reached for her hand and squeezed their hand as if to silently tell them it's okay. For that moment, they were half of one another. Them against the world. And just that moment, Lou almost forgot that she had lost what she had with Lyssa. Then suddenly the throb of her ankle brought her back. There had to be somebody else. She told herself. If there was somebody else, it would easier for Lou to accept she no longer had a part in Lyssaâs life. It was better to think of them with someone that they got whatever they needed from someone else than know that Lyssa hated her. When Lou commented that Lyssa must have had a date, she was surprised by her reaction. Her brow wrinkled in concern as she watched Lyssa walk away from her without so much as a word. When they stopped in their tracks, Lou felt a glimmer of hope that they wouldnât leave her. In fact, she felt herself give them a smile, half expecting them to tell her they would be back. Instead, their next few words, She blinked at them, a wave of confusion hit her. âYou left me, Lyssa,â Lou said lamely, her voice wavered a bit before she shook her head, her own eyes beginning to fill up with tears. She knew it had been all her fault that Lyssa left, but then she always thought she wouldnât have left so easily had the roles had been reversed. âYou left because I drove you away, I didnât think you still loved me.â Since Lyssa had left, she had been filled with regret. She wasnât going to make the same mistake twice. âI still love you too.â
oliverschulzâ:
âYeah, letâs go.â With a nod, he started to walk in the direction of where her car was. Sure it was a little odd being in daylight with someone he had slept with once and hadnât really had contact with her since. It wasnât like they exchanged numbers or any personal information about each other to keep in touch. âHonestly? I think itâs the hair, for some reason it calls to me and I just have to keep talking to you.â He joked.
Rolling her eyes at him, Lou gave him a who are you kidding? look. âThe hair? And here I thought it was my wicked sense of humor. Boy, men are superficial.â She chuckled, stopping by her jeep and opening the passenger door for him. âWatch your head, donât want you clobbering that noggin like you did the last time we hanged out.âÂ
