How? Isabeau figured it may be time to lay all of his cards out on the table. “... Do you remember being in—uh—a field? With me?” Siffrin scoffed, the noise so dismissive it finally succeeded in sparking some irritation within Isabeau. “Could you be a bit more specific—” “Fine, do you remember cutting off some of your fingers and then disappearing on me?” Isabeau interrupted, his voice a touch louder than before. He noticed his hands were clenched in his lap, and forcibly relaxed them, taking a deep breath. Siffrin’s expression had slid into the same eerie blankness that his voice had been encaged by. Isabeau kept going, settling his voice into something softer. “I’m trying to piece things together, Sif, and I think I understand some of it. I’m smarter than I look! The timeline is messed up somehow, isn’t it? I don’t know the specifics, or how long this has been going on, but I’m here now, and I want to help.” Still, Siffrin hadn’t moved. Isabeau wasn’t even sure they were breathing. Concern had him shifting closer, expression furrowing and mouth parting. “... Sif, talk to me. Breathe, please? In, and out…” “What did I say to you? In the field.” “... What?” “I said, what did I say to you, in the field.” It felt like Siffrin was looking through him. Their gaze was distant, their singular eye almost glazed over, their fingers twitching in their lap as they stared blankly ahead.
