looked into cloth pads
read different diy recipes like tooth paste and deodorant
found out where to buy the beeswax sheet things locally
My original and edited zero waste + vegan recipes:
My deodorant formula:
This smells really nice and doesn't stain clothes or leave an oily residue. when tested against other popular store bought natural/vegan deodorants it worked longer, plus it helps keep your underarms dry.
Ingredients:
¼ cup lavender ( fragrance and soothes) ¼ cup cornstarch (moisture adsorbing/ reduces oiliness) ¼ cup baking soda (absorbs bad odors) 2-3 tbsp solid coconut oil (antibacterial, moisturizing, binder) 5-8 drops eucalyptus oil ( fragrance and soothes)
To make: Put lavender, cornstarch and baking soda in a blender or coffee grinder blend or pulse until lavender is as broken down as possible, then sift in to a container or bowl. Melt your oil in a microwave for about 10-20 seconds or in a pot on low heat until melted, fully incorporate with your dry ingredients and add eucalyptus, mix thoroughly then scoop into a jar or air tight container. (Feel free to double or adjust).
To use: Scoop up a small amount and slowly rub into your armpit letting it melt then fully rub in, if you have armpit hair I recommend combing out any solids (up to you).
My sweet mint toothpaste:
Sweet, minty, whitening and antibacterial plus no chemicals! This is a cheap, eco friendly and cruelty free alternative to traditional toothpaste.
Ingredients:
8 tbsp solid coconut oil ( anti bacterial, binds) 3-5 tbsp baking soda ( cleans debris/plaque, whitens, absorbs bad odors) 1-2 tsp stevia (sweetens) 1-3 tsp natural peppermint extract (flavor, fresh tingle and smell, soothes gums)
To make: Mix all ingredients in a bowl (adjust baking soda, mint and sweetener as desired), when fully incorporated transfer into a jar or air tight container.
To use: Scoop a small quantity and brush teeth as usual.
My face wash/skin care formula:
Cleanses, softens and smells amazing !! This is perfect for dry or oily skin, uneven or acne prone skin and people with eczema or sensitive skin. oatmeal is great for soothing most skin conditions and gently exfoliates. It’s great for cleansing without stripping your natural oils helping in balancing your skin, you can use this 1-3 times a day every day a week if you choose, or use this to replace your current face wash/scrub/mask routine.
Ingredients:
½ cup dry oatmeal (exfoliates, binds, cleanse, moisturize, soothe) 1 tbs dry chamomile (soothes, exfoliates, fragrance) 2 tsp dry lavender (soothes, exfoliates, fragrance)
To make: Blend all ingredients in a blender or coffee grinder until a fine or mildly chunky powder. Sift to remove stems and other large fibers. Put into a jar or an air tight container.
To use:
Face and body: Scoop or pour a small quantity (about 1-2 tbsp) into your palm or in a small dish, add a little bit of water (about 1 tbsp at a time) until desired fluidity (paste-liquid) gently rub on face and/or body in small circles (let sit on skin if you like). rinse off, pat dry.
Bath: In a warm-hot bath mix in 2-10 tbsps of face/skincare powder, relax and enjoy.
About 3 weeks ago I took a bunch of cuttings from my Spider Plant and grew out the roots in water. Today I was finally able to pot them!!
This is a great Zero Waste way to have more plants in your house because you avoid the plastic containers, plastic plant info tags and some plants in stores are even wrapped in a big sheet of plastic!
Ps. I killed a lot of plants before I got to this point lol. Start small and you’ll be a great gardener in no time! 🍃🌱
Re-Growing Green Onions
This is so simple and easy to do!
What you need:
The roots from a few green onions
Glass jar
Water
Sunlight
Rubber band (optional)
Take your green onion roots and rinse them off.
Get a jar (I used an old pasta sauce jar) and add a few inches of water.
I put a rubber band around mine because they kept falling into the sides of the jar. Put your onions by a window and change the water out everyday. In around 5 days, you should get results like this:

I want to go low waste but I need to make changes for that.
I'm still living with my parents so it can be hard but it also gives me an opportunity to buy metal and glass containers for when i move out. Of course its best to use what you have as long as it works, but i also need to buy things like glass jars so i can go grocery shopping.
My goal for this summer is to redo my room. I already started with my closet. I want a more minimalist and practical wardrobe so I'm gonna sell, donate and upcycle my clothes.
I also need to get a new bed, but not much can be done about that. However i chose a new metal bed thats plastic free. Well mattresses are synthetic i guess but i domt know what to do about that.
I also decided to stop buying most make up and change to more natural products. I'm gonna use up what I own but i dont need to buy 500 plastic make up paletes. I do love nail polish but i read up on its health risks ... guess ill give it up or buy a healthier one for special occasions. i saw bamboo nail polish but you cant really go plastic free as the brush is plastic.
Im also gonna use up most things like my hairbrush and then replacing them with no/ low waste alternatives. Just throwing out plastic i bought makes no sense.
Theres a lot i still need to figure out ...
but a year from now i hope to be more low wastw
