Affect theory- I feel like this is the right direction for me to look into next. I would have mentioned this in the report but I can tell it'll be a big one
Decisions, analysing: the space between images vs no space no space = immersive, overwhelming The 4 images as 1 almost work like pixels too- I like the repeating rectangle shape: is it 1 image or 4? I try to take photos with a fibonachini spiral in mind rather than rule of thirds. Its the shape in nature: seashells, waves, and flowers opening. With the 4 images together, its as if there are multiple focal points if you flipped and rotated the spiral layout over the entire rectangle. These multiple points of engagement create scattered attention - for me at least. The viewer's eye follows the light like a fractured narrative. The same place, outfit and laptop give a sense of a similar yet disjointed period of time. Aidan highlighted how it looks like the matrix and the tiles look like pixels, and that the work is digital and nauseating. The work was grouped together inspired by a poem I wrote about the co-dependant relationship people have with technology. I wrote in one line, "the phone charging by my bedside, the umbilical cord I never cut" The bath shape reminded me of a womb in these images which inspired the title/s. The overexposed light looks like a portal opening up, like online portals. The bottom left image makes the light look like water filling the tub, it gives a sense of closeness to the body. Water usually touches skin in baths, yet, the subject is fully clothed. The images are absurd and psychological. The documentary-style images become surreal through blurring, unnatural green light, and white light flooding the frames.
deciding on images here but they look like they're being projected toward the viewer because of their placement and increasing scale.
Folio/display decisions:
I had a lot more images, similar to my blog post and decided to present my best 8 to fit the layout of the powerpoint slide. I was deciding between making the linear narrative got across the top anad then across the second row - or - like: Left image: 1 3 5 7 2 4 6 8 I decided on the first way: Right image: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 I decided on the right image because the composition looks more relaxed and natural and makes more sense as a linear progression of the performance. Performing: presenting art. Art as the actor. Also- my favourite thing about this sculpture is how it guided viewers through the space. It's as if it was accepted into the space without question.
How should I display the photos of my lunch? I taped a pole that was around the total height of the photos i decided on to the wall and used tape about the size of the length of the photos > I drilled one hole in each line and used a ruler and leveller for the other hole > hand screwed in a L shaped hook to display the photos I also thought about displaying them in 2 rows of 4 which they looked good but I love the self-referential circle > bagel. its slighting off balance I didn't place a single image as 12 o'clock so there is no clear beginning and end ALSO I thought after I packed everything up I could display them as the opposite- like the bagel is coming into existence. I would have been so easy to swap out the photos on the hooks.....
An exhaustive experimentation exercise: Lots of experimenting and fake room building because we were kicked out of the gallery. The metal frame is lost next to black lino floor so we put desks together in a pattern to make a 'strange room'. I used the lines of the sculpture to create a fake wall as you can see in the series shot together in my portfolio. This was fun and a true collaboration in every sense. We are excited to continue with this idea next year. Maybe huge pads. Human-sized latex casts. More immersive multi-media work. I would love to display my marbling galaxy of fat from my bone broth on a TV lying on the floor. It would work well with bodily sculptures and photography as an exhibition. Meta-documentation. We need better documentation still. I used manual mode and didn't shoot in camera raw. We tried to create a gallery in motion, long exposure shot, but will definitely need a tripod for that
I helped Aidan with documenting his work, we were in the white cube for 5-6 hours without a break and were silly by the end. It feels like there's no sense of time or place like a padded cell. Our head spaces inspired these chaotic arrangements. We used whatever we could find from our cars and the drawers at uni. We experimented with form, arrangements, light, and shadow rather than worrying about what the objects represented or meant.
Bagel working titles: ican'tfeelmylegsiguessilostthem suspended process held destabilised cycle almost but not quite moving forward returning to it eating it putting it back eating but not seeing seeing by not seeing progressing regressing arresting unfocussed eyes see clearly unearthing feelings birthing feelings searching and not finding blinding the body sees the body knows
something clock/time
Bagel consult:
play around with title - try working with what the work is evoking rather than the bagel
how it makes people feel [peer feedback]: disoriented, dizzy, unfocused, stuck in a cycle with no progression, or concealment?
new materialisms
the photos are strong enough to not be distracted with sculptural framing, try clean boards - spray adhesive, and L hooks
Editing: Everything Bagel
>star-rated them in Bridge on my hard drive >editing the shortlist in Photoshop >turned up the brightness and adjusted the contrast across all 8 of them to look more consistent and dreamy/blinding >printing at Officeworks (too late for digifab) and I'll display them in a circle like a bagel, they'll make a cycle from first bite to last bite They're making me feel something; they're like the image you'd see when you die. If a photograph is an object, am I sculpting?
impressionistic photography
The weeds have been growing, so I took photos of them. I experimented in manual mode with the DSLR I hired (to actually learn). Some photos are pretty, but some look like the art at Ikea - the because of the generic imagery + some parts of the image in focus, others not> It creates unnecessary drama and it's just bad taste! BUT blurring as a style choice was a cool discovery
later, I ate my bagel on my couch and thought it looked perfect > too perfect
So I took the images out of focus again >applied to this bagel, it looks like a DS cooking game or like the idea of a bagel - it has an airbrush/digital effect.
manual lens blur + digital camera = interesting dialogue... real life cartoon
my plant is a painter (photos soon)
Consult notes
have camera ready - my process produces finished works
maybe I could be prolific if i called it finished more often?? :o)
take it out of the workshop into a white cube gallery - colonial construct - and borrow that authority
work is ready more than you think if you just display it properly
dont fuck up my wrist its not worth it for the art
the blog can include everything im reading etc you dont have to answer for it/ be specific - only in the written parts of assessment
semiotics - the study of signs
study the foundational aspects of my practice
immerse myself in contemporary art

Reflection on process its hard to make when i see the whole process as art with endless possibilities - i have a video too, its so archaeologist - hammer, dust and paintbrush, excavating these blocks >>>>>> I want to unearth things, bury them too many ideas not enough time which ones are they good ideas? Should I follow the plan or the process? its like the processes multiply with every move I make sometimes
