The project brief required a design of a contemporary jazz centre for Nelson Mandela University. This centre will house visiting musicians and lecturers as well as provide venues for teaching and performance.

The centre needs to be designed to provide world-class standard facilities which will cater for a number of widely divergent activities.

It may be closely linked to the existing music department and larger auditorium venues (Main Auditorium) thus an area outlined on the adjoining diagram was identified as a possible site. Other sites that explore integration with public and performance might also be explored.

The buildings program should be distributed over three or four floors since it will have to fill into a very tight space.

As the general layout of campus depends on lifting student activity on a podium above traffic, it is expected that you r design will follow the same logic in introducing a parking and services lower level.
