Barcelona in January is one of the best european cities to visit; a place where you can enjoy a long weekend full of activities, events and relaxation. On the edge of the mediterranean, which is always enjoyable, even in winter, the city starts the new year offering lots of new activities and possibilities for every holidaymaker to experience, rendering it irrelevant however many times they’ve already visited the city. Pay attention because we are going to give you a selection of the best ways to enjoy January in Barcelona.

Terraces

There’s nothing like a good Catalan aperitif on one of the many terraces open every day in Ciutat Vella or close to the sea. Even though January is evidently one of the coldest and humid months of the year in the mediterranean, Barcelona boasts a cool, pleasant climate (especially during the main daylight hours) which visitors can appreciate by sitting down, relaxing and watching the world past them by.

Shopping

January is sale season meaning there’s nothing better than taking advantage of the sales by getting your hands on designer products or the latest must-haves of Barcelona. Small boutiques that can be found in the old district or the newest areas of the city are precious gems, where you can find practically anything you want, whether it’s furniture, clothes, footwear or the newest jewellery, accessories or decoration.  

Cultural programme

Even though events outside in the open air usually die down dramatically, Barcelona’s January cultural programme is full of new activities. However, take note that some of them are in Catalan (one of several languages spoken in Spain) making it difficult to understand the beauty and drama of some acts, such as plays. Nonetheless, they’re worth watching, even for a little bit.  Besides this, you have other possibilities to explore as this is the time for opera, classical music, modern art expositions, cinema, short films and concerts with international artists. Before setting off, take a look at the programme and adjust your dates accordingly. You won’t regret it.

Better rates and services; less people and more availability. In terms of accommodation, Spain, and especially Barcelona, is a traveler’s paradise in January. It has to be said though that Barcelona’s hotels can be some of the priciest in Spain. Nightlife

In these colder months nightlife is concentrated more to the zone of las Ramblas and Ciutat Vella; towards the port and in places like Razzmatazz or Apolo. The style of music is quite varied: from alternative to mainstream. There are also themed parties taking place every weekend.

Parks

It always feels like spring in Barcelona. This is why you should always go for a stroll through its various parks, even in the middle of winter. The one in Ciutadella, near to Petit Palace Boquería Garden hotel, is a worthwhile visit, especially on Sunday mornings when it is filled with fun family atmosphere with children, adults and pets all over the paths and trails. In the past, it was customary to have breakfast in one of the surrounding bars and then afterwards take a stroll around the park followed by a vermouth in the Born area; home to a wealth of tapas bars.

Carrying on with the subject of Sundays and breakfasts’, another must-try in Barcelona is brunch. Although there are local bars where you can brunch every day of the week, traditionally, brunch is for early Sunday getups from 10:30-11:00am because if you intend to go any later you’ll probably have to queue. The cafés that do the best brunch in Barcelona are always full from 12 o’clock. A favourite of ours is Brunch & Cake for price, service, quantity and quality. They now have two branches in the city centre, however, keep in mind that both are constantly busy.

We must visit the north of the island or Santa Eularia des Riu. This charming town is one of the few that preserves the natural characteristic attributes of Ibiza. It’s a family town full of small houses, several residential areas and hotels by the beach, specially designed for families with kids, who don’t want to miss this amazing Mediterranean island, but the traditional party areas in Majorca.

What to see in Fuerteventura? Suggestions!

An island that has everything and combines tradition and modernity. Although being a touristic destination, its peaceful and calm atmosphere remains alive. There are many places that is worth visiting in Fuerteventura. You cannot miss them!

American Star Fuerteventura

The American Star shipwreck is really close to Jandia. It’s a luxury ocean liner built in the past 30’s.

Specifically, the American Star was 40 or 50 meters smaller than the emblematic Titanic.

If you visit Fuerteventura, you should go on a tour to the American Star, which was shipwrecked in a severe storm occurred in the Canary Islands in 1994.  

Casa Museo Unamuno

In this 19th century house stayed Miguel de Unamuno on their holidays in Fuerteventura.  If you a literature lover, visiting this place will be an action of commitment and pilgrimage. This place is full of objects daily used by the author, including some intact manuscripts in the rooms. Casa Museo Miguel de Unamuno is in the east of Fuerteventura, in Puerto del Rosario.

Mirador Morro Velosa

Mirador Morro Velosa is located in Betancuria. For all those who don’t know the history of the Canary Islands, Betancuria is the old capital of the Canary Islands, that’s why it is really important despite being a small charming colonial town.

This viewpoint is located in the highest point of the island, so you can see the entire Fuerteventura. From this viewpoint you will admire panoramic ocean views. Betancuria Rural Park is at the foot of this beautiful viewpoint.

Renewing style: Garden Hotels

Design is certainly not an essential element to determine the accommodation quality, but it has increasingly become a key piece of the touristic puzzle, able to change the global experience concept that guest takes home following his stay.

Everybody likes arriving to a hotel and find a place where we would love to live in. a nice design to be photographed and shared, new, modern and comfortable furniture, simple but modern decoration…Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Even in 3 or 4-star hotels we can usually find old-fashioned, retro and even a bit kitsch rooms.  

Although it is not the best time for it, some hotel chains have undertaken an important transformation in this sense. Therefore, we decided to highlight them to encourage the rest of them, and we avoid disappointments in the following years when entering the room that we lovingly booked.

Let’s start with Garden Hotels. Majorcan chain already mentioned some other times, including hotels in Mallorca, Ibiza, Huelva and Almeria. Madrid: world of flavours (II)

We continue our tapas tour in Madrid. We have still two days of trip and, as you should remember, our cholesterol is sky high and an ear-to-ear smile. Friday night ended up with a party in La Latina. We were invited by some exceptional friends to one of those lifelong bars in Madrid located in this mythical neighbourhood.  But we retired early to take advantage of Saturday. And we did it. The morning found us in a hotel next to Puerta del Sol, and later in Lavapiés. We had planned to make the tapas tour with some friends, since that area was totally unknown to us.

The day flew by and we stayed almost all the day in Lavapiés, except at night. We started in the Plaza de Lavapiés in one of the terraces, sitting under the sun, sharing a bucket of beers and  panchitos. Just to whet our appetite. Then came the only disappointment of the trip: we wanted to try the famous zapatillas of Melos Bar, in one of the streets leading off the square, but we discovered they do not open at noon, only at night ... And Saturday night was already reserved. So, I cannot tell you how they are because we could not taste them, but by the window, we saw the owner at noon, very busy preparing the stock of their gastronomic "zapatería". We postponed until the next visit, undoubtedly, because, besides, I was told that the croquettes (rather croquetones) are also a real delight

With the desire of Melos, we went elsewhere. To the authentic Lavapiés. The affordable one. Impressive menu, ridiculous price, crowded bar. By a miracle we caught a table and ordered a couple of portions: croquettes, scrambled eggs, ham...  Everything a delicious, a bit small compared to the places we had visited on Friday but, overall, we gave it our approval. We kept walking. Carried along by our local guides.

- Hey, let's go to the beach!

- Ah?

Yes, we went to the beach in Madrid. Or rather, La playa de Lavapiés, which is the name of one of the tapas bars in this neighbourhood and, of course, I recommend it. Not only for its cuisine but for the fact that being there is like being at home, surrounded by friends, wonderful strangers and your trustworthy waiter. Laughter, laughter and more laughter! Stacks of beers, sweetcorn and chips decorating the portions of nachos and humus we ordered. We repeated. Yes, a couple of times! And there we stayed until... 8 pm!

From there, we went direct to the birthday, the reason of this crazy gastronomic trip to Madrid. We ended up clubbing in La Latina... Exhausted. And then back to our hotel next to La Gran Vía.

On Sunday we woke up with new energies and wanting more. Yes, we are insatiable.

We reserved the day to do the "traditional" in Madrid: buying Christmas lottery, walking around Plaza Mayor, taking a squid sandwich and vermouth in La Latina. Again bar, beer, tapa and chatter.

In Madrid, if you want, you can solve all the problems of the world around a beer tap. We tried firmly, as you can read.  No place for discouragement.

We left La Latina willing to walk and walk. We went to El Prado and visited one of my favourite hotels next to El Retiro, we went to the park to feel that, besides eating, we could even do a bit of exercise right in the nature, we could even do a little exercise. Far from bars and other temptations. We kept the last sin until the end:  chocolate with churros and porras around Plaza Mayor. A delicious end for a memorable and highly recommended trip. Of course, no diets. If you really want to enjoy Madrid, you have to eat. :)

Madrid is synonymous with good food.  The capital of Spain is one of those places you should not visit if you are beginning a diet or if you have high blood pressure. Leading on the bars of the pubs, drinking a beer (or two) and wolf down one of those tapas which are unique dishes. Huevos rotos, potatoes with chistorra, manchego cheese, fried squids, croquettes of all flavours, a bit of paella and cocido. Just like that. And free. Who could resist?

I can't. Just 2 weeks ago I escaped to celebrate a birthday in Madrid and... I nearly stayed there to live. The atmosphere, the people, the squid sandwich of Plaza Mayor, La Latina, Lavapiés, a night in Malasaña, San Miguel Market (a bit expensive but exquisite), cocido in La Bola, a Bloody Mary on Sunday. Madrid is a world of flavours. More delicious than ever.

From bar to bar, from tapa to tapa, from beer to beer... That's how I spent my days in the capital. Yes, I think I have returned with extra weight (fortunately Ryanair doesn't affect the round trip weight, on the contrary, I would be charged for excess baggage XD ). I travelled with 4 friends and we had the luxury of staying right in the centre, taking advantage of one of the offers of the boutique hotel chain Petit Palace. Specifically, we chose Petit Palace Londres, a hotel located in Preciados, perfect for visiting El Tribunal, Chueca, La Gran Vía and Malasaña and, on the other side, Sol, Plaza Mayor, Latina, Las Letras neighbourhood and Lavapiés. Comfortable, with a lovely space for having breakfast at the loft and rooms with free wifi right in the centre of Madrid. The price, tight: 65 Euros per night.

We travelled by metro (which is very expensive, indeed) and taxi, because travelling by car in Madrid is an authentic madness, especially now that almost all the centre of the city is semi-pedestrian street. We didn't try the public bicycles because it was too cold and we couldn't be bothered, but it seems that the municipal initiative is working well, so it is always a good alternative (maybe in Spring, in the next trip :) ).

The first day, Thursday, we arrive in the afternoon and, after leaving our things in the room in Preciados street, we will go to to Malasaña. A walk around the terraces of 2 de Mayo square. There you feel a lively ambience since noon until the early morning. Now, it is not recommended to postpone the dinner time: from 23 hours, tapas begin to vanish. We get distracted and end up having dinner at 12 midnight in the classic Madrid Madriz bar. Beer with free XXL sized tapas. Delicious. The Olivier Salad... one of the best I have tasted.

Friday dawned sunny and cold. We had hangover from previous night (great night). We left the hotel around noon and walked from Sol to Las Letras neighbourhood. We had the first appetizer at Santa Ana square. Then, we walked by Prado street, where Catalonia Las Cortes is located, towards Quevedo street. With the same name of this mythical street, one of the most special places in Madrid is located there: Taberna Quevedo. Good atmosphere, beer with free tapas, friendly and helpful staff... And reduced space, so if you wan to visit it, you must go early or you wont get a place to sit. After having tapas, we returned to Ópera. We were waiting for a cocido in La Bola.  We ordered 3 cocido portions for 5 people and jam and cheese starters. Just excellent.Truly. Regards to the waiter who, besides his professionalism (scarce in these times), made us laugh and turned our experience into an unforgettable one.

We dedicate the afternoon to reduce calories by walking around all the centre of Madrid. The city is lovely in these cold months and we had the fortune of enjoying the sun every day, despite predictions of rain. Camera is a must: there are sunsets behind the Royal Palace which are worth a thousand photos.

After sunset, again, wine. In this occasion, just a couple of brave ones decided to try the free tapas served with the beer. Madrid is food. Delicious food!. To end, more gastronomy: San Miguel Market. Fortunately it is a bit expensive and more and more targeted at tourists. But there the food whets the appetite of anyone. Even of those who have not assimilated the food yet. We closed the night in La Latina, wine cellars everywhere. Toasting, eating and laughing as never before. The truth is that, even before the tapas, the best of Madrid is the people. 10 for everyone.

Fuerteventura, there I go!

Between trip and trip I will take some time to pour my heart out to you, my friends. I am eager to spend this year's Christmas holiday with a group in... my cherished Canary Islands! It is almost closed and organised, leaving just enough to chance (because you must always leave loose ends in order to be surprised and get a funny anecdote... Although I have a felling there will be thousand more). Places to visit are already chosen, and accommodation too. And then, off we go!!

The first stop will be in Fuerteventura. We will stay at one of the three resorts that Iberostar chain has in the south of the island: Fuerteventura Palace Hotel, which, although it is a family hotel in Jandía, it has spaces of Adults Only accommodation next to Matorral beach and, by the way, it is really attractive. He have not chosen the other two hotels because they are like resorts for children in Jandía, which is not bad. but it is not the trip we want, of course.

The plan is to enjoy a lot of things out of the hotel, but also to take advantage of the accommodation.  This is why instead of choosing a family hotel in Jandía, we have preferred a hotel targeted adults, with theme parties, an Adults only area, wonderful swimming pools beside the sea... My eyes sparkle just thinking about it. I think we have made a good choice, but I will tell you the experience later, because if we really want to know a hotel and stay with guarantees, we must have tried it before. And, even though, sometimes you have many disappointments because everything changes a lot after one year.

We will arrive to Fuerteventura the day after tomorrow, enough time to relax, enjoy the sea and getting away from the cold. Forecasts announce gentle temperatures, some could but, in general, good weather. I mean, there is always better temperatures than in Madrid or, even, in the Balearic Islands. So, good bye coats.  Let's prepare the bikini for Christmas eve.

First, we will visit Morro Jable, Cofete beach, a mountain route at the natural park of Jandía and a couple of fun and entertainment nights in Costa Calma. We will be almost all the time in the most southern part of the islands, although the plan was to do an excursion to the north.

After Fuerteventura, we will directly go to Lanzarote, where we will spend the Christmas eve with my friend. But in the next post I will talk you about that plan, that today we are so busy with the preparations. Huge hug!

Christmas in the Canary Islands

Probably you have thought some time of spending the Christmas holiday in the Canary Islands, on the beach and under the delicious December sun. Yes, all of us have wanted to be that lucky one saying hello from Playa Blanca, Costa Adeje or Jandía, wearing the Santa Claus hat and swimming costume.

Yes, green with envy. But this year, I want to break some tradition and go to enjoy the Christmas in the Canary Islands.  The advantage of having good friends in those lands and the desire of taking advantage of holiday under the sun, after working during the entire summer, have become a strong reason for buying a ticket and avoiding excuses. So, it is confirmed, there I go. And this year, I will be saying hello wearing bikini and Santa Claus hat from the Canary Islands.

I have looked for accommodation only in Fuerteventura, because there is a house waiting for me in Lanzarote, but I don't decide yet. It is terrible because my work is to review hotels XD The thing is that, when you go with a group, you must meet the needs and taste of everyone... A real odyssey.

On one hand, I have thought of the possibility of booking a hotel in Playa de Jandia with Adults Only area and special activities for groups. On the other hand, I would like to go to a hotel in Corralejo where I stayed the last year (a wonderful Barceló hotel where I have discounts!) but even though, being honest, I prefer the south of the island. Maybe because people like to visit the south in winter? Perhaps. It is probably that we end up booking an All Inclusive hotel in Fuerteventura, because they are usually more affordable and some of us cannot spend so much. I will be taking you about it because I have some places on mind and want to ask you for any recommendation. I have not visited any of them, of course.

The other part of the holiday, the end of the year celebration, I will stay at... a hotel with Jacuzzi in Tenerife. This destination is definitely chosen. Besides, as I work after January 3th, I will take advantage of the two visits I must do -to the luxury hotel in Santa Cruz, the famous Grand Mencey, and the spa hotel in Tenerife par excellence, IBEROSTAR Anthelia, -to extend the stay and enjoy the coast.

Then, I fly again to say good bye to this beautiful island and finish a few inspections -a visit to some All inclusive apartments in Lanzarote, located in Playas de Papagayo and a hotel for children in Lanzarote, in Playa Flamingo. In short, I will be until Janurary 12-13 in the Canary Islands. So, if you coincide with me and want to have a Christmas coffee under the sun...  I can't wait to travel!

A new look for the Playa de Palma Beach Complexes

The reconversion of the Playa de Palma is underway.  Although the initial project was not viable because of lack of public funds due to the economic crisis, both the private and public sectors have started to take small steps, directed to changing this well established resort, visited principally by travellers who have limited budgets but need a lot of dedication, both from the hotelier, the organisers of excursions and other offers and also security forces and help desk personnel.

While the authorities produce the new PRI (Integral Reform Plan), the latest news is regarding the renovation of the traditional beach complexes: the snack bars scattered along the sea front from one end of the beach to the other, each with a number that divides the beach into zones. One of the most famous is number 6, which is the reference point for German tourists for nightlife on the Playa de Palma - S'Arenal.

In total there are 15 beach complexes situated along the sea front and all will be themed: four will be relaxation areas by the beach, three will be for sports, four will specialize in ice creams or cocktails, four will be chill-out and one will be only for parties, according to information from Palma Town Hall.

All will have highly qualified professional staff of a very high standard and the services offered will be increased, looking after every detail, from offering the best menus, to the use of local fresh products, healthy menus, top quality drinks, with the final objective being that this touristic area of Majorca raises its profile and guests spend more.

The idea is to attract those clients who already travel to the area and stay at hotels of a high category: guests of the spa hotels in the Playa de Palma, of the four star resorts such as those run by Iberostar or Barcelo in first and second line and families who have chosen hotels with mini clubs in the Playa de Palma and who look for extras, more than just All Inclusive guaranteed by their children's hotel on the Playa de Palma.

Also the measures hope to attract residents from Palma and Llucmayor to this area of the coast in the low season.  This is the way to find the key to unlock the seasonality which has forced the Playa de Palma into a position of being a low cost summer destination for Germans.

Beaches of the north of Majorca (I): Pollença bay

 The north of Majorca is unknown by many, even by many locals. Apart from the area of the hotels of Playa de Muro or the resorts of Port d’Alcudia and Pollensa, this part of the island has less crowded and famous caves and large beaches which offer the visitor the perfect setting for resting at the shores of the Mediterranean. 

In this first article we will visit the beaches of Pollensa bay, an area ideal for both water and mountain sports lovers: it combines the last part of the Serra de Tramuntana with some of the most ideal beaches and caves for the practise of sailing, diving and even kitesurf.

Cala Formentor

One of the most emblematic areas of Majorca, famous for its excellent turquoise and calm waters and for its location on the northeast of Majorca, at the end of the Serra de Tramuntana. It is a beach of fine and white sand, shallow and clean waters, surrounded by a pine wood and close to one of the historic hotels of Majorca, the Formentor Hotel, managed by Barcelo group.

Cala Boquer

A haven of peace where to get away from it all. It is only accessible on foot through a private estate, so you will need a permit. That is the reason it is not a crowded beach, which makes it one of the last magic and exclusive areas of the tourist island of Majorca. 

Cala Castell

It is also a beach of pebbles with a private access. If you want to visit these caves on Pollensa bay, we recommend you rent a sail boat or a canoe and visit them from the sea. 

Cala Murta

One of the hidden caves only accessible by foot through the woods. There is a parking on the road to the lighthouse: you can leave the car there, walk by the hard shoulder for a while and then access to a reserved area with huts used by scouts during summer camps and continue along the main path

Beaches on the north of Majorca (II): Alcudia

We continue with our trip around the north of Majorca, and after leaving Formentor and Pollensa bay, La Victoria and Mal Pas, we discover another of the most valued beach areas of Majorca by tourists and residents. We are talking about Alcudia bay, from Alcanada to Can Picafort, an area which includes emblematic tourist attractions like the natural park of S’Albufera of Majoraca and Playa de Muro.

If you are travelling with your family, you might be staying in one of the many hotels with miniclub in Playa de Muro or in a hotel for children in Alcudia, and if you are travelling with friends you might have chosen a hotel for sportspeople in Port d’Alcudia or a resort in Playa de Muro close to some of the many beach bars and chill out terraces recently inaugurated along the coast.

In any case, you will be able to enjoy some of the most famous and complete beaches of Majorca: Alcudia and Playa de Muro beaches. These beaches divided into different areas with different names (which only locals know) stand out among some of the longest and best preserved beaches of the island.

S’Aucanada

It is one of the calmest beaches located close to Alcudia harbour. It is ideal for an excursion with canoes around the coast of Pollensa, where you can find different unspoilt caves where to stop and have a bath. It is perfect for children and for a picnic with friends.

Alcudia beach

Although it is sometimes confounded with Muro beach because of their closeness, Alcudia beach is located near the area of hotels and apartments of Port d’Alcudia, near the Llac Gran, close to Artà road, which then connects to S’Albufera Avenue. This beach features all type of services for the practise of water sports and for sunbathing.

Muro beach

This beach goes from Es Murterar to Can Picafort. It is distributed into different areas and it is surrounded by some of the best apartments for children in Alcudia, hotels with miniclub in Majorca and resorts with special services for cyclists, as the area is ideal for the practise of cyclotourism and family holidays.

Ses casetes des capellans

It is the last  part of Muro beach, bordering Can Picafort. It is one of the locals’ favourite bathing area: calm, far away from the hotels of Alcudia and with a natural surrounding ideal for sunbathing on the sand and enjoying the surrounding dunes and the beach bars and chill out terraces open till late at night that liven out the summer days with all type of parties.
