I was chatting with @britishdetectives about this - even beyond the eye rolls and leaning against police cars, there are many similarities between our two favorite WW1 vets. They are both quiet, patient, thoughtful men who are totally incorruptible. Even after experiencing so much horror, they still have empathy for victims and believe in pursuing justice. They only show flashes of anger when confronted with evil or self-serving, corrupt behavior that puts others at risk. They both respect women, people who are different, and even “the enemy” in a way far beyond their times. And the actors are both masterful at communicating complex thoughts and emotions on their faces while using few words. Ahh, I love them both!
