On Classical Greek grave monuments, it’s common to refer to unmarried youths as “brides of Hades/husbands of Persephone.” It is exceptionally rare for mortals to marry deities in the normal course of Greek worship (possibly with the exception of the Eleusinian mysteries, but Demeter is still tied to Persephone and the entire point of the Eleusinian mysteries was that they promised a life after death, so ______?), but not much scholarship has been done on the how or why, aside from the generally basic knowledge that it was not a Hellenic practice.

With Persephone’s title of Kore, or “Girl”, we can read into the myth the mourning and value of female children. In a patriarchal society women are valued by their relation(s) to men, and we can perhaps read these “Brides of Hades” as the last vestiges of respect offered to unwed girls. In this way Persephone stands in for all young women who are taken to the Underworld before they can be married, and as the Kore figure gives reassurance that these sisters and daughters have met a worthy husband.

Which is once again further evidence that Hades was considered a worthy and respectable deity who was feared largely because he represented the unknown. In many ways, he is the Classical world/Spear counterpart to Neil Gaiman’s Death.

What really sucks about the way Joss Whedon writes is that he sort of has this idea that if he writes about women being strong and confident, that is all it takes for women to appreciate his work. Like, even if the villain constantly belittles a woman for being a woman and people are constantly harassing her and sexualizing her, it’s okay because she’s strong and she can take it.

The biggest difference between Whedon’s version of Wonder Woman and Jenkins is that in Whedon’s version Wonder Woman is A Woman. She (and the audience) must be constantly aware that she is a Woman, that she is Sexy, that she is overcoming incredible odds because she has the terrible disadvantage of Being Born A Woman.

Whereas in Jenkins’ film Diana simply exists. There are some points made by other characters about her being a woman, like when Steve won’t sleep with her because he feels it’s improper, or when his secretary says, “Oh yes, put specs on her, like after that she won’t be the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen”, but Diana is almost completely unaware of her status as a Dreaded Woman. Her excitement over a baby? She’s literally never seen one before. Her little makeover seen? Spends the whole thing looking for something comfortable she can fight in. She basically never mentions the difference between men and women, never even says that women are better or whatever because she was raised by them. 

Joss Whedon would have never let Wonder Woman forget she was a Woman. She would have constantly been making comments about it, wether positive or negative, as would everyone around her. In Whedon’s heyday that might have flown a lot better, but now women seem to be a little sick of grrrrl power. They just want power. They just want to exist, both on screen and in life, without constant reminders that they are Women and that they must pay for that at every turn.

i want to share my support to stefan karl stefansson for being such an amazing person and a great actor, to his family and to the lazy town fandom for supporting him as well and make his (possible) last days the best days of his life.

i remember when i was a child. i used to watch lazy town and i loved it. but, of course, when i started to grow up i kinda lost my connection with the show but without forgetting about it.

then the we are number one song came along and the memories of my childhood returned.

and the fact that one of the characters from a show that marked my childhood is about to die puts me in a very sad mood. but i’ll try to stay positive and keep going.

Harry Potter Rant

Reasons why I ALWAYS struggled to get behind the original pairings and completely agree with JK Rowlings latest statement.

Hermione is basically the second protagonist. Harry is the main character but Ron and Hermione are not equal below him, Hermione saves their lives time and time again. While Harry is hailed as the “boy who lived”, Hermione is referred to as the “brightest which of their age”. 

Harry and Hermione understand each other in a way that nobody else ever will. There are a number of moments in the story where Hermione and Harry go through things by themselves. Ron is absent for most of Prisoner of Azkaban. Hermione helps Harry prepare in Goblet of Fire. Harry and Hermione travel alone for a long time looking for Horcruxes. The challenges they faced together strengthened their bond. Hermione was always very aware of everything that was going on, she is the closest thing Harry has to someone who understands what he went through. 

Hermione is level headed and logical, time and time again Ron teased her and frustrated her. Having feelings for someone does not make your personality compatible. If Hermione was to end up with Ron they would argue. a lot. Ron is also short tempered, insecure/paranoid about people not wanting him around, and jealous. Putting an emotionally driven character with a logically driven character is a recipe for disaster.

Ginny always idolised Harry and put him on a pedestal, something Harry hated right from his introduction to the wizarding world. All he wanted was to be a normal person, not a hero or celebrity. Ginny has never seen him as “Harry” he was always “Harry Potter”, Hermione was raised outside of the wizarding world so even though she knows who he is she doesn’t see him any differently because of it.

Ginny was absent for almost all of the struggles Harry faced and would not be able to understand what he will go through after the war. Harry would suffer from PTSD after the war ended and would spend the rest of his life trying to put all the horrors he saw behind him. Ginny never experienced anything like that and would not be able to truly understand. Whereas Harry and Hermione would be able to help each other through it.

People are complaining that Harry and Hermione would have been bad because its the typical main character ending up together. I don’t see Ron and Hermione ending up together any differently. The relationship of Harry and Ginny seems more like an effort to include Harry in the family he always wanted. 

Throughout the story we see Harry and Hermione working well together and Ron causing clashes due to his inability to control his emotions. Realistically Hermione would not forget the times Ron has hurt her and would likely not see him as a potential partner. 

But the biggest thing for me is that Harry and Hermione were always on the same wavelength. Sure, maybe they were more like siblings at the start but feelings can change and evolve. Definitely during difficult times when you need someone to turn to. Could you imagine having that bond with someone then not being with them? even if they didn’t have passion they would likely end up together simply because they couldn’t imagine being apart after everything they went through together. They needed each other and that wouldn’t just go away.
