plot: our characters work together. there was always a tension between them ‘till they kissed/slept together. now both of them try to act like nothing happened. after another shift together things get weird/emotional.
It’s been another long shift, they had a few calls, one of which ended up being a few hours long. It was always a very tiring experience. Unfortunately today didn’t have a happy end, the fire got to the people trapped on the highest floor and three people ended up suffocating with smoke. It was never easy to come back home knowing you didn’t help. The job of firefighters wasn’t easy, especially for women. Magnolia wasn’t new in the field, but that didn’t mean she was used to losing people. It always had an impact on her, so that’s why her station buddy offered a ride home. She was too tired to even think twice about it, she just got in his car dreaming about taking a hot shower and going to bed.
After a silence ride home she finally got inside her apartment knowing damn well her colleague is following her. With a sigh she put her bad down. “I’m okay. You didn’t need to walk me to my door.” She said feeling his eyes on her. This situation would be much easier if not the fact that the last time he walked her home things ended up with them getting way too close. Maggie turned around and looked at her friend. “Come on. Don’t look at me like this.” After lack of discussion about what happened between them Magnolia accepted the fact that he considered it a mistake. “I’m fine. You can go home. I mean it.”
evan buckley:
buck didn’t say it, but he thought it too as he took a sip from his beer - none of this was forced or tiring and he appreciated that. he always had a good time around maggie. whether they were on a shift, answering a call, out on a coffee run, or something at a slower pace such as dinner on her couch. it all came naturally to him. it was a good sign to him too, feeling like he could turn to maggie while off the clock.
“uhh, yeah,” buck put his bottle down and released another chuckle of his own, tilting his head with a rub to the back of his neck. “i was in a vulnerable place. it-it was my first loss, actually. i didn’t take it well - no one expects you to, you know. and-and i recognized her from a social media request. one thing led to another and that happened. it was the first and last time time.” he assured her, not wanting to come off as the guy who sleeps with every woman he meets.
“i used to turn to sex for all the wrong reasons. including as a coping mechanism. not my finest moments. i’ve put all efforts in to not be that guy anymore. i think i’m doing a pretty good job of that.” he was proud of himself, proud of the progress he’d made despite the opportunities to go down that path again.
her comment was supposed to be in favor of keeping her in good spirits, but it was him who laughed. “me? a hero? i don’t know about all that. let me know if you still feel the same after i truly am making you bust a gut from laughter.” she was one of the few to appreciate his comedic side and whether her laughter was at his expense and not his favor, he liked knowing that he could make her enjoy something so much after all she had been through.
If someone told her one year ago, that life was going to look like this — no doubt, Maggie wouldn’t believe it. after everything that happened to her in the past it almost felt like she didn’t deserve good people around her. Look at her now; having so many amazing friends around her, who truly cared about her. Finally, at the age of thirty two Magnolia had a chance to taste the life she didn’t even knew she wanted. So much of her expectations changed since moving in here, she wasn’t the same young woman before staring to work at 118. This Maggie was definitely much happier than the Mags from the past. For once she was taking every day how it was, without expecting fireworks or a prince in shining armor.
“Ohh, so you’re telling me I might get laid on my therapy session.” Magnolia laughed at the idea of having sex with anyone, it’s been such a long time since she even considered undressing in front of someone. Her last marriage definitely left her scarred, but it didn’t mean her body was handling the tension well. Sometimes she would be grumpy for no actual reason besides being horny and fighting that feeling. “I’m just kidding. I’m not really a one-night-stand kind of girl. Wish I was.” Life would be much easier for her if sometimes she would just let herself have fun. It wasn’t a crime, she was a grown woman. “For me, for a long time sex was just an act. Something that needed to be done to get pregnant.”
With a sad sigh Maggie looked away drinking the last few sips from her glass. It was actually the first time she has ever opened up like that in front of anyone besides Maddie and it seemed like it was actually lifting a lot of wight of her shoulders. “It stopped being something to make me feel good. I miss times when I was actually having fun.” She poured herself another glass knowing it won’t be long before she gets little tipsy. “Wow, my life really is pathetic.”
