The first time I got myself involved with weaving when Gudi Mudi (NGO) started a programme, Handloom School, to train youngsters of Maheshwar. I was the very first person to join that program. At that time I was enrolled for undergraduate degree of BCom in computer applications. After joining that program I realised two things. The first thing is that the handloom weaving has tremendous unexplored opportunities. And the second is that I have been unconsciously trained and taught the intricacies of weaving by my father and grandfather over the years. During my days at handloom school I became very good friends with Wasim Bhai. Wasin Bhai is a fourth generation weaver. He is also a Mechanical Engineer and works at Chimatech Pvt Ltd as site incharge at New Intake Well, Mandleshwar. We, with other students, revived the traditional Garbh Reshmi Saree at handloom school. Since then, Wasim Bhai and I have been working together and constantly trying to come up with new techniques and designs but also keeping the essence of the tradition and culture of Maheshwar. The other night I was wondering why I'm drawn towards this laborious and tiring work of weaving. I could have become a food blogger or a filmmaker or something else. But then I saw the calm and content face of my father who was returning home after a long day at our handloom workshop. And in that moment I realised that it's in my blood, it's in my genes. I inherited it from my father and he inherited it from my grandfather and he inherited from our forefathers.
