Journal Entry 4, Mediah Territory-Stonetail Ranch
It's been a while since I used this thing. Life's been full of changes. It turns out that my stay with the Kestrel's was shortened by yet another business opportunity.
It all started when I was on an errand for Mister Costa when I came across a flyer in Tarif looking for a experienced ranch hands at someplace named Stonetail Ranch. After asking for directions from the questionable stable hand, I made my way out to the ranch. It was running on a skeleton crew of older folks who didn’t seem happy to see me. I explained my purpose for being there and about the work recruitment ad I found. They warmed up to me and offered me to water my horse and showed me the grounds which were in need of some fixes. There was even an old tavern and horse race track out back. They told me that in order to get hired, I’d have to speak to their supervisor, Captain Ceresah, but she was currently stationed in Epheria on some business.
I wasn’t sure if I could make it all the way out there, it was past Calpheon. I was still employed by Mister Costa and the Kestrels. So, I thanked them for their time and rode back to Serendia with a heavy mind full of decisions to make.
That evening, while I was finishing my dinner and watching the sun set over Heidel, I decided that I wasn’t going to let the opportunity to get the ranch job slip through my fingers. I had to at least give it a try. I saddled Monday and set off, taking advantage of the little bit of day light I had left.
I could smell the sea before I reached Epheria Port and was glad that I remembered the scrap of paper that they left me with the Captain’s Epheria address on it. I made my way to the door and was greeted by a annoyed bark to let myself in. I did so, and was suddenly in the presence of an intimidating man and woman who looked like they wanted nothing to do with me. I explained who I was looking for and the woman approached me and introduced herself as the captain I was looking for. The man didn’t have much to say to me, but I knew he was keeping an eye on my movements. I couldn’t tell if this was her lover or not so I made sure to be respectful to the Captain.
Not a minute later, an elf let herself into the house and apparently the captain didn’t know who she was. Let me tell you, I’ve known only a few elves, and they are not like us humans. They think differently and act without reason at times. Do you know this elf just made herself comfortable in the Captain’s home, looking over her maps, making herself tea, asking if she could sleep on her couch. I never met an elf like this one.
Even further, while we were trying to figure out the elf, another Mediahian woman wandered in looking for work as a ranch hand. At first I thought I might have lost out on the job, but then the Captain ended up hiring us both. I told her I’d ride out to the ranch at dawn and the Mediah woman, Shandari, said she’d meet me there in the morning.
And just like that, my life took a turn in another direction. I was no longer a merc or a farmer, I was a rancher.
My hand hurts. I’ll write more another day.
