Ocean Vuong Q+A

Many of the things he said were very interesting. One thing that stuck out that he said is when they asked him when he was first introduced to poetry. In my mind, I immediately thought he was going to give a scholarly type answer, something like “I was exposed to it through school” or “through my parents”. But instead, what he said was very relatable. He said he was exposed to it through the womb through music his mother listen to. It just made me realize how many times we have this preconceived idea that poetry is something “complex”, that only a few can understand. I like the fact that he made it relatable, like many other things he spoke about.

I can also relate to him in the sense of immigrating into this country as a child. Even though we come from different backgrounds, there are many things that as an immigrant, I can relate to. One of the most relatable for me where the struggles of learning the language at a young age. Even though it is 1000x easier for a child to learn a language than an adult, there were many obstacles that have to be faced at a young age.

It was nice to be able to see the points of view of such a great writer, and it was even more interesting realizing how relatable he was.

20 Questions with Soph

My initial idea was to interview my best friend, but unfortunately, because of conflicting schedules, I was not able to do it. So instead I interviewed my younger sister Sophia. She is a 14-year-old teen in middle school, I thought it would be interesting to compare different points of view to find differences and similarities between our generations. My inspiration for random questions came from Vogue’s video interviews called “73 Questions”

Q: Name 3 artist that you are listening to? Why?

A: Kanye West because of his style and fashion are out of the box

Q: Name 2 woman you look up to. Why?

A: Malala Yousafzai because I feel like us as girls, we take school for granted, we don't realize the great opportunity we have. She gave women a voice.

Mom because I feel as if she is able to do anything.

Q: What celebrity do you think negative influence to your generation?

A: Well I have a lot, XXXTentacion his lyrics are bad, and he's been in jail for battery, abuse.

A: Project and Solving- all we do is create random projects.

A: Kids are not allowed sharpies, I’m not sure if it's true but I feel as if it is unnecessary.

A: He’s not open minded. Honestly, no one in school likes him. He's just racist and acts childish.

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world for a year where would you live?

A: Tokyo, Japan; The culture intrigues me. It's a city that I always wanted to visit and live in.

A: Nikes because I’ve always had nikes. They are classics.

A: I would buy an island so I can escape whenever I wanted.

Interview Proposal

I am going to interview my best friend. We both come from families who immigrated so I am going to ask about differences and similarities between our cultures. I am also going to ask about things in her culture that she wants to carry on and I would compare them to the things in my culture I want to carry on. I am probably going to use both video and text.

Questions for Ocean Vuong

1. With you being bilingual, do you ever face times where you cannot find a translation that you feel fully captures what you are trying to say?

2. How was your process of coping with so many changes after you immigrated to the US?

3. How did you decide to make writing a career? Is this the career your family wanted for your future?

Documentary Proposal

My film is going to document my daily life. The multiple short clips will document my life from waking up all the way through going back to sleep. Unfortunately, I did not do anything for Spring break and I was sick with a cold through it. Now that I am back to my normal schedule this week I will document my life as a student with a part time job. I’m thinking about taking shots that show the time, then show the activity I am doing. The activities would be everyday things, me waking up, picking something to wear, eating breakfast, walking my dog, driving to work, work itself, etc. I will try to have more screen time with activities that I do not do every day. Things like maybe going out with friends, going to the movies, bowling, any social activity, to make it more interesting. I will also try to include the time I spend on social media, I will incorporate screenshots of my interactions in social media accounts like Instagram and snap chat. It would give a sense of viewing one of my daily activities through my eyes. I will also try to include screenshots of some other forms communication like texting and FaceTime. I will attempt to give the film a sense as if it was first hand, through my eyes. To a point, it is going to be some type of video diary.To record, I am going to use my phone. I am not just going to use the camera app, I am going to use SnapChat to document most of it. I feel as if snap chat will bring the sense of the first-hand experience I am looking for. For editing, I am going to use iMovie, QuickTime, and Picsart. I am going to try different filters for different scenes to try to match how I am feeling at that precise moment. For example, if it is early in the morning and I am really tired on my way to work, I am going to use a black and white filter. When I am in a good mood, like getting out of my last class, I will incorporate music and a filter that will enhance color. I will use QuickTime to capture live images from my phone, which is part of my day. I will use iMovie to edit all of the short films together. Picsart will be used to add the filters to the different short videos. I am also going to take advantage of the filters on SnapChat. Personally, I use these filters when I am in a good mood so I will use them throughout the day when I am in a good mood. I am also going to try to incorporate the everyday music I listen to. For example, when I am in a bad mood I will incorporate music that makes me feel better. My vision is of making a documentary that is like some type of daily diary or blog.

Who is Lidia Yuknavitch?

From the start, you are able to tell that she has gone through a lot. Lidia had a traumatic childhood, she was sexually abused by her father and sister. Her mother, who was also an alcoholic, was aware of the abuse but she never intervened to help and protect her. Here is some other information; she was born in the 60’s, she received a scholarship for swimming in Texas. She had hopes of attending the 1980’s Olympic games in Moscow. Her swim career was cut short because of her drug and alcohol addiction. After losing her scholarship, she enrolled in the University of Oregon where she received her Ph.D. In the 80’s, she began writing as Lidia Yukman. Lidia began writing in 1986 after daughter passed away the day she was born.

It is clear that to her art is therapeutic. It is a way of expression and to a point a safe heaven. She states that she “believes art the way other people believe in God”. Her work has been published in The Sun, The Iowa Review, and Another Chicago Magazine to name a few. In 2011 she released her memoir Chronology of Water. Her memoir has developed a great fan following. Overall she has eight published works. It is interesting to see how she has not always had the profession of being a writer. She has gone from working in a house painting crew, to farming, to working with a road crew.

Lidia is open about her sexuality, she says that they are “territories of possibilities”. She has had relationships with both men and woman. She has a son named Miles. Lidia currently lives in Portland, Oregon where she is a college professor. Lidia is very active on social media, posting multiple times throughout the day. She has a good amount of followers on Twitter, where she has been verified. Lidia also runs Corporeal Writing, they are writing workshops.

I have not read any of her works, after seeing her Twitter I am interested in reading her work to continue to get an insight on her points of view.
