Mark J. Holterman, MD, also helped establish the Hannah Sunshine Foundation, which focuses on furthering stem cell therapies that address urgent treatment needs in children.
The foundation’s website features several patients, including a young woman with dysautonomia and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA). Since infancy, Sarah had experienced stiffness, joint inflammation, digestive deficiencies, and abnormal blood pressure drops. Also experiencing spontaneous leaks of spinal fluid, she was not able to stand comfortably for longer than a few minutes and had an inability to generate warmth in the extremities.
At the time of her treatment through a therapy developed by the Texas biotech firm Celltex Therapeutics Corporation, Sarah was receiving high-dose chemotherapies and intravenous steroids in order to moderate her immune system, and was on continuous tube feeds. Through the infusion of adult stem cells that were harvested from her own body, isolated, and regenerated, Sarah gained energy and the ability to eat food without experiencing intense stomach pain. In addition, the spinal fluid leak issue subsided and she was once again able to properly digest and absorb food nutrients.
