Sunset Versus Morning photo shoot
When should you get your Maui portraits taken?
This is an important question to ask. Here are a few pros and cons for day vs sunset photo shoots.
DAY TIME PORTRAITS
When the sun is high, you can get that amazing turquoise ocean water in the background.
Any greenery around you (trees, bushes, plants, etc…) will pop more in the photos.
You’ll have a hard time with squinting due to brightness.

Maui Chocolate Tour and Waterfall Hike
Recently we had the chance to experience the unique Chocolate Tour & Waterfall Hike from one of the newest tour operators on Maui’s north shore, Kings Gardens Maui.
Situated on a large, wild and tropical estate just off the famous Hana Highway, the chocolate tour includes chocolate tastings along your hike, as well as a walking tour through the area’s rainforest grounds and viewing of the memorable and very secret Kings Waterfall and his real ancient Hawaiian sacred gardens.
Our tour guide was highly entertaining and knowledgeable, and made the experience truly unique with their sense of humor as well as factual insight into the area’s ancient farming practices, cultural significance and highlights of the local flora and fauna found along the trail. Their guides are the highlight of their tours. Honestly, I’d pay to just sit and laugh with their guides for a few hours.
So much fun, and so much incredible information about our island’s history and culture.
Even better, the chocolate tastings were delicious and unpretentious, and an excellent way to learn more about this delicious superfood while simultaneously experiencing the natural beauty of Maui’s rugged jungle landscape. We especially enjoyed as our guide showed us how to make yummy sweet chocolate treats on the spot with only 3 natural Maui ingredients (organic raw sugarcane, organic raw cacao (chocolate) powder, organic virgin coconut oil) baked in the sun, then cooled. We Say It’s A Must Do While On Maui!

Lineage Maui
Last night we ate at Lineage Maui.
It was one of the more unique dining experiences we’ve had on Maui! Located at the Shops at Wailea, this new creation from local boy and Top Chef Sheldon Simeon again rethinks how good should be made and served.
First off, the design of this small new Maui restaurant is perfect. Clean, minimal, modern. Our first impressions came from an enthusiastic staff that new everything about the menu. It’s a good thing too because the menu was a little overwhelming at first. It holds so many unique dishes that it has a glossary.
The food is a mix of Hawaii local and Filipino with everything made from scratch and served family style. The place was bumping, completely full, so we had a short wait to get an order in and ask questions about the menu. Chef is used to having a crowded dining room and anticipated it with a cart of pupus.
We tried the Boiled Peanuts with “Oxtail Soup” Spice, Local Banchan, and Pipikaula (we’re always a sucker for Kochujang). A delicious and fun way to start the meal.
Joseph served us and had a wealth of knowledge! We asked a thousand questions, and he patiently and graciously answered. The cocktails blew our minds! We had a kiawe food smoked whiskey drink that was memorable for many reasons (ORDER IT!) It’s called the Makule Kiawe with lijah Craig Small Batch, kiawe bean gum, house bitters, orange bitters, orange oil, and yes: kiawe smoke.
Again, your food comes family-style, to get ready to share. Joseph poured us loose-leaf green tea, fresh and complimentary at every table. We then dove into some of the best short rib ever (a huge portion, so we have sandwich meat for the week now) and a perfectly cooked Onaga.

Tommy Bahamas Wailea did it right today for our lunch with a delicious steak salad, onolicious blackened fish tacos, and key lime pie.

Sunsets Bar and Grill at Maui Nui Golf Club
This morning’s breakfast had a great view and zero crowd. Our friend Jon has a egg, bacon breakfast while I settled for a pretty massive serving of Ahi Poke Nachos. ONO!!!
This spot used to be Konos, but now it’s a little more casual and not very crowded. We had an excellent breakfast.
Had the most amazing breakfast at La Provence. This lil Upcountry spot is always busy and serves up delicious meals.
Great coffee, quick service, and Ono grinds! Smoked salmon eggs Benedict was great. The salad was about as good as it could get too. My kid lived the salad, which says a lot.
It’s said they’re opening up for dinner soon too. Can’t wait to see what they do!

Lunch at the Mill House
I just enjoyed a pretty stellar lunch at the Mill House Restaurant. We tried all kinds of delicious, seasonal dishes sourced locally (much of which came directly from their farms on property).
The Waikapū Valley was a little cloudy, but blue skies hung overhead. I love when the clouds weave through the mountains. Truly a unique view.
I’ve never had a subpar meal while at The Mill House Restaurant At the Maui Tropical Plantation. Executive Chef Taylor Ponte has a solid team of passionate chefs creating the best Maui has to offer.
Star Noodle Review
Last evening we had a quick, delicious meal at one of our favorite west side spots, Star Noodle in Lahaina.
Their location is a little of the normal tourist path, which was smart because they know guests are willing to drive 5 minutes more for his food (and I’m sure the location aids in the fact that prices are astonishingly low relatively.)
Everything was delicious! The salmon was a touch overdone, but that’s my only complaint. The “bacon” and eggs stole the show though.
We were in a hurry, and even at 5:30 it was getting packed. 4 of us jumped on at the counter and got served right away. Great staff, excellent ambiance, perfect food and at great prices. Mahalo!

Fleetwood’s on Front Street
I haven’t been to this restaurant since it was Oysters back in the day. The building, both above and below ground, is awesome! Roof top dining is about as good as it gets. I was hoping for some really great food, and I got it.
I had the lobster shrimp roll with truffle French fries and my wife had the fish tacos. Mine was decadent and AMAZING! Best truffle fries I’ve ever had. That with a cold Maui Brew Co. IPA, coupled with great company and a view? I was in heaven.
The roof is on the 3rd floor with a pretty stunning bar. If I were staying in Lahaina, you’d find me spending quite a bit of time up here.
And for those wanting to stay indoors, or during less than prime weather, the 2nd floor is beautiful. Makes you want to order a cognac, smoke a cigar and read a classic book.

Hali’imaile General Store
Ive never had a bad experience at Bev Gannon’s restaurant. Great service, incredible food, warm atmosphere. Last night I had the crispy roast half-duck with celery root purée, mango chutney grand marnier orange jus de volaille. Cooked perfectly!!!
We arrived right when they opened for dinner at 5 (we have kids), and the parking lot filled up immediately. Make reservations or arrive early!!!
Longhi’s Lahaina
We had breakfast this morning at Longhi’s on Front Street in Lahaina. We had French press coffee, pancakes and lobster eggs Benedict. It was good, but it’s not nearly as good as their Wailea location. The building is badly in need of renovation and it felt phoned in.
Front Street is a great location for a restaurant, but it feels like a lot of the spots there let things slide. It could be so much better. Little things that make the experience less than optimal: dirty broken menus, fake maple syrup, bread that didn’t seem fresh baked, etc...
