Maya’s eyes widened a little. “… Crazy how?” She didn’t mean to ask so suddenly, but how could she ignore something like that? She was a bit unsettled, leaning in a little closer as Edmund’s voice grew quieter—though she hoped he wouldn’t be uneasy by her proximity.

“He, uh…” Edmund glanced around to make sure there wasn’t anyone close enough to eavesdrop before continuing, “He experiments a lot, and sometimes… people are involved.” He shuddered thinking about the chimera he’d seen down in Franz’s laboratory. The poor creatures usually died within a few weeks… perhaps for the best, since that put them out of their misery.

"Experiments?" Maya could only stare, mouth gaping open. He was even using people? "What for?" she managed to murmur, keeping an eye out and her voice low. She couldn't just let something like this continue--and it was clear to her now Edmund was not safe.

Maya sighed, crossing her arms. "So you don't have a reason?"

“It’s not that high,” she muttered, not looking her father in the eye. “It’s not like I have the flu or anything.” She hated this. She honestly wasn’t feeling that bad—she didn’t like having to make up work, and she especially didn’t like worrying or burdening her parents. “Really, I feel fine.”

“It’s probably at least 100 degrees,” he said, gripping the arm of the sofa before slowly rising to his feet. “Regardless of whether or not you feel fine, you still need rest. The more you rest, the faster you’ll get better.”

He sighed, rubbing his head. He hated seeing Maya fall ill like this, even if it was only a head cold or minor case of the flu. He supposed old memories liked to linger. Because of it, their worrying over her simply wasn’t something that she could ever fully understand.

“I’ll get you something to drink,” he said, glancing back at her. “You said lemonade, right?”

"I've been resting all morning," she protested, furrowing her eyebrows. Maya became fidgety when she had to just lie around--it's not like she could seem to fall asleep, either, so it was more just miserable than anything.

"I can get it myself." She hadn't realized Roy had the day off today; she had hoped she could just stay out of bed and help herself to what she needed. If she knew he had been downstairs, she may not have come down at all. Now that he knew she was sick, he was just going to worry and insist on tending to her--two things Maya wished she could have avoided.

Maya tensed in the silence as her father kept glancing her over. This lightheadedness wouldn’t seem to go away—maybe lemonade would help.

“I’m going to get something to drink,” she said suddenly, wanting to escape Roy’s gaze. As she was about to go, she felt his palm against her forehead, and she quickly looked up at him.

“Hm…” he mumbled against, keeping his palm planted firmly against her skin. Yep. Just as he thought.

“You failed to mention that you have a fever,” he said simply, giving her a highly unamused look. His daughter was smart, there was no doubt about that—though he often found himself questioning her common sense. When you’re sick, you rest. It was as simple as that.

It was funny. Most kids Maya’s age had the habit of faking sick so they could get out of school for the day. Though Maya was quite the opposite in that she faked being well so that she could go to school.

He furrowed his eyebrows, not letting his gaze leave her. He knew that Riza wouldn’t keep Maya home from school without reason—after all, her education was important.

“Hm…” he mumbled, placing the palm of his hand against her forehead.

“Yeah, me too.” Sighing, she crossed her arms. “I stayed home today—I wasn’t feeling well when I woke up, but now I’m feeling fine.”

He glanced at her raising an eyebrow. “Not feeling well?” He sat up straight, the slightest hint of concern crossing his expression. “What was the matter? Are you sure you’re better now? he asked, glancing her over.

Maya smiled as she listened to Edmund—seeing his eyes light up made her feel a certain happiness. “Franz?” she asked, pausing. His teacher? Was he a relative, or someone Edmund was just currently living with? If that were the case, she wondered how exactly he might be treating him… “He’s your teacher, then?” It might not have been best for her to pry, but… she couldn’t let it alone.

After a moment of hesitation, Edmund replied, “Yeah.” He tensed his shoulders anxiously. “He’s kinda… well…” Lowering his voice, Edmund informed, “Most people would probably think he’s crazy.” Heck, Edmund thought Franz was beyond crazy. The man was a psychopath, void of any remorse… a fitting pawn for Edmund’s father. Those two were thick as thieves.

“Alchemy?” Her eyes lit up, her gaze turning to the boy. “Are you an alchemist?” She didn’t mind much that he was staring at her—though she hoped it wasn’t because of anything she might be doing wrong… Shaking it off, she smiled, not wanting to do anything to potentially make him feel unsettled. “I’m actually one myself.”

“Really? That’s so cool!” His eyes, too, gleamed with excitement. “Yeah, alchemy is one of the subjects Franz is teaching me. On a good day, he’ll let me play around with alchemy for hours. It’s a nice way to distract me from—” He caught himself. Dammit, he was getting relaxed around Maya, and that loosened his tongue… dangerously loosened it. All it might take would be one sentence, and he’d as good have signed her death warrant. Father was ruthlessly meticulous about eliminating liabilities.

“From the more boring topics,” he amended, hoping he’d managed to cover up his near-blunder.

”!!” Maya blinked a few times. “The Fuhrer?” Smiling a little, she crossed her arms. “What a coincidence—I happen to be his daughter.” She couldn’t help but keep glancing down at the papers she held, wondering what sort of information was being delivered to her father. To be personally delivered like this, she figured it must be something important, right?

“Oh!” Catherine exclaimed, surprised. She was aware that the Fuhrer had a daughter, but didn’t expect the girl to be so grown. “What a lovely coincidence. You might make my job a little easier.” She gave a sheepish laugh, seeming a little nervous. “Um, do you know where I might find him?”

Maya smiled, her eyes still shifting to the papers. "Yes--he's in town on business." Staying quiet for a moment, she met Catherine's gaze. "--Do you know what those papers are for?" She couldn't help but pry--her curiosity got the best of her.

Maya glanced at him entering from the kitchen, leaning back as she crossed her legs. “Yes,” she replied, dissatisfied. Her eyes kept drifting to his hot chocolate—she could smell it easily across the table.

“Perhaps I might have something to eat as well,” she pondered, rubbing her chin in thought.

“Oh, you’re getting something to eat? Would you mind getting me a cookie from the—” he stopped himself mid sentence. He knew what she was up to here.

Riza constantly nagged him that since he should watch his diet a little better that he should stay away from sweets before dinner. Oh. Yes. He knew what she was doing here.

“Never mind.”

"Nothing? Okay," she said simply, going into the kitchen. Looking around, she wondered just what exactly she should bring out to present. She knew exactly where Riza hid all of the sweets, too.

Ah, perfect.

Emerging, she sat herself down, a small saucer before her with a slice of cake on top of it.

"You can be white."

Maya put down her cup, frustrated, as her father left and made his exist. Pushing it aside, she couldn’t help but feel irritated—the hot chocolate she had made wasn’t even that good. Huffing, she opened the board, setting up the pieced, carefully centering each one perfectly as she did so.

She wasn’t her father—a cup of hot chocolate wouldn’t convince her of anything. Even if did make the best…

Roy couldn’t help but smirk to himself as he added a pinch of cinnamon to his own mug of chocolate—his secret ingredient. Maya didn’t realize that the key to good hot chocolate was a little extra milk and just a bit of cinnamon.

He sighed contently as he seated himself across from his daughter—purposely pushing his mug a little close to her side of the table.

“So, the board all set up?”

Maya glanced at him entering from the kitchen, leaning back as she crossed her legs. "Yes," she replied, dissatisfied. Her eyes kept drifting to his hot chocolate--she could smell it easily across the table.

Maya twitched slightly, finding herself in disbelief as she stood there completely immobile. Had her father just turned down hot chocolate? This would be more difficult than she had originally anticipated…

“… Okay,” she said evenly, entering the kitchen. Not long after she merged with a cup for herself, sitting down with the chessboard tucked neatly under her arm.

Watching as she sat herself across from him, Roy whimpered just the slightest as he inhaled the scent of chocolate. Crap. He twitched his hands impatiently. Maybe Riza would make some for him when she returned from the office tonight. Maya made crappy hot chocolate anyways. Riza’s was the best.

…Though his hot chocolate was the best—and Maya knew it.

“You know what?” he sighed, standing up from his seat. “I’m going to my make myself a mug,” he said, waving her off as he made his way to the kitchen.  ”Set up the board while I’m gone.”

Hot chocolate? She couldn’t be serious. Maya, his daughter, of all people, was offering to make him hot chocolate. That was about as rare as a blizzard in the desert. He was certain now that he had to be more suspicious than before. The lemonade was one thing—but now hot chocolate? Ridiculous.

“I’m fine, thank you.”
