âProtective of his little familyâ
Pairings: new dad!jj Maybank x new mom!reader
Blurb: you just gave birth to your daughter, River, a week ago. You and JJ were in the ânewborn bubbleâ. You finally feel well and comfortable enough to bring River to the chateau to meet the pogues. But it doesnât go exactly as planned.
Staring at your week old newborn, River. She was everything you needed.
She was cradled in the small swing, that was moving gently to soothe her. You were moving slowly around the room, putting some things in a small to go bag.
You finally felt comfortable enough to leave the house, the blissful bubble you had been in for the last week since you got home from the hospital.
JJ was still weary about it, feeling anxious about bringing River out into the world. His precious, small baby. His anxiety ramped up to the max today specifically.
Of course he wanted to show her off to his friends, his family. But still, he couldnât help how he felt.
He also knew you were still healing, and still quite sore and tired from just giving birth a week ago.
He didnât want to push you.
But you insisted. You wanted to get out of the house for a little bit. Both you and River needed some fresh air.
JJ couldnât say no to you, never could.
So thatâs why now you were getting ready to go to the chateau.
You just finished putting the things into the bag. Diapers, an extra outfit (can never be too cautious), pacifiers, wipes, and many other baby essentials that you were too scared to go without.
You walk over to where you put River into the swing, and unbuckle her. You lift her up into your arms slowly at the exact time JJ walked into your shared room.
âThereâs my girls.â
JJ doesnât waste anytime walking over, wrapping his arm around you and his other hand moving to stroke Riverâs cheek.
He kisses the side of your head, holding you both close. âYou sure youâre up for today, baby?â
You smiled softly, leaning your head on your shoulder. âYes, Iâm sure. Donât you want the pogues to meet Riv? Theyâve been blowing our phones.â
JJ bites his lip. âOf course I want them to meet her, I want them to see Iâm a dad now. I want to see my best friend hold her. But, I also know that you need some space, baby. You just gave birth to Riv, we can stay in our bubble a little longer.â
âI need to get out of the house, and so does River. We could use some fresh air, honey.â You pat his cheek gently, moving to grab the baby carrier.
JJ just parked the truck, having just arrived at the chateau. He sits quietly for a moment, glancing over at you before looking at River into the rear view mirror.
âYou okay, J?â You murmur, your hand moving to gently thread through his hair.
JJ nods wordlessly, âJust a little nervous.. Yâknow? What if they drop her?â
âJJ.â You roll your eyes at him, âPlease donât plant that seed in my head. Iâll become more paranoid than I already am.â
âRight, sorry.â He grinned sheepishly at you, looking at you innocently.
JJ finally shuts off the engine, and gets out. He rounds the front and opens the door for you, helping you get out.
After making sure you were ok enough to stand by yourself for a second, he opens the back door.
He grabs the bag you packed first, and slings it over his shoulder. Then, he picks up the car seat, cooing at River as she stirs.
You watch him with a softened expression, watching his nervous expression. You take a step forward towards him, your hand moving to caress his cheek.
âTake a deep breath, baby. Just relax a little bit.â
You give him a reassuring smile, before looping his free hand with yours.
You both make your way up to the chateaus steps, the sounds of the pogues growing louder.
The screen door creaked loudly as you opened it, walking into the familiar home, JJ right behind you buzzing with nervous energy.
You and JJ stand there in the living room for a moment, not saying anything.
The pogues all go quiet when they see you three. Zeroing in on River in the car seat JJ was still holding.
All the pogues jump up, moving toward them, all wanting to hold River.
Kiara and Sarah meet you both first, cooing over River.
âPlease, please can I hold her?â Sarah immediately pleaded.
JJ glances back at you, making sure youâre okay with it, before back at Sarah. âYes, you can. Just let me unbuckle her first.â
JJ doesnât wait for her response, before moving past the pogues to set the car seat on the couch. Unbuckling River and shushing her softly when she fusses from being picked up.
JJ motions over Sarah, making sure sheâs sitting before setting River into her arms.
Sarah nods quickly, tears gathering into her eyes. âOh my god.. sheâs so beautiful you guys.â
You smile softly, watching the pogues gush over your daughter.
It had been a couple hours and things had been going great.
Everyone had moved outside to the porch, getting some fresh air and having a good time.
That was until John B was telling JJ that they need him to go on a treasure hunt, not even asking for his opinion. But JJ wasnât having it.
âYou guys do realize y/n just gave birth right? Not even a week ago she had our baby, Iâm not gonna leave her or my newborn baby alone to go treasure hunt.â JJ retorts, his anger slowly simmering just below the surface.
âSheâll be fine-â Kie tries to interject, but JJ cuts her off quickly.
âIâm not leaving her alone Kie! The only places Iâm going the next few weeks are grocery stores and doctors appointments! This-â JJ gestures to you who is holding their newborn daughter to your chest, âthis is my godamn priority, not some treasure hunt that will lead to nowhere.â JJ snarls, standing up abruptly, going into the chateau, muttering angry words under his breath.
Once he comes back out with Rivers car seat, he gently takes the newborn from your arms, putting her into her car seat and strapping her in.
âIâll be right back, donât move.â JJ speaks softly to you, changing his tone only with you.
He then brushes past the pogues, going to his truck and putting River in the backseat.
He then comes back to the porch, once again ignoring the pogues, and helping you off the couch.
JJ doesnât even look at them as he helps you walk down the porch toward his truck.
He helps you into the passenger seat, making sure youâre comfortable before closing the door and rounding the truck to get to the drivers side.
Once he checks on both of you, he peels out of the driveway.
You watch him quietly for a moment, trying to get a gauge of what he was currently thinking.
You let out a sigh, your hand moving to rub his arm in soothing circles. âYou okay?â
JJ shakes his head, his jaw clenching. âI canât believe they were saying that stuff. I donât care about treasure hunts anymore.â
You nodded softly in reassurance. âI know, baby. They just donât get it yet.â
âWell I made my message loud and clear. If they donât respect that thenââ
âJ, baby. They meant well. They werenât thinking about me or the baby. They just wanted to have fun like old times.â
âWell those old times almost got us killed. Multiple times.â JJ muttered.
You pursed your lips softly, he had a point.
JJ glances at you, knowing that heâs right. âI love them. I love John b, heâs my best friend. But thereâs gotta be some sort of boundary or something. You and River are my top priority. This is a line they canât cross.â
You nod softly, understanding his frustration. Instead you just rub his shoulder, trying to help him relax.
âI love you,â you murmur softly.
As much as you didnât want JJ to fight with the pogues, you also appreciated it. He was protecting you, and River. Setting a clear boundary that his family was not a line to be crossed with.
JJâs expression softened, the tension draining out of his shoulders. âI love you too. Both of my girls.â
Authors note: sorry for being inactive, like I said before I currently have exams, so Iâve been focusing on that. But I hope you enjoy this fic.
