(50.8 x 38.1 x 3.8 cm), Edition of 10, Published by Exhibition A, New York @exhibitiona #ryanmcginness One of my favorite materials I have worked with for over 20 years. + + + McGinness’ title for his second porcelain-baked enamel on steel edition with Exhibition A, “Sitting in the Basement Knitting,” comes from the German antiwitze: Q: Two skyscrapers are sitting in the basement knitting mopeds. What’s wrong with this picture? A: Mopeds are crocheted. The artist’s surreal and psychedelic drawings depict a melting spray can, scissor sisters, blooming eyes, and a man vs. ape face-off. The drawings also include references to surrealism itself with an amalgamation of Magritte images and Duchamp’s metronome (Object to be Destroyed). Centered in the composition are two hands cuffed together by plastic rings with a beer can suspended between them—a reference to Martin Kippenberger’s Alkoholfolter. Finally, an upside-down pile of dethroned crowns within the frame of a hand-held picture is a sly nod to Keith Haring’s A Pile of Crowns, which, in turn, memorializes Jean-Michel Basquiat who often symbolized himself with a crown.
