damn we got 2022 tomorrow
Man I wish universal basic income was a thing so people could just leave jobs theyโre unhappy at and wouldnโt have to worry about not affording their basic needs while they look for something new or so that people could actually explore their passion projects like only the rich and powerful can just take time off to write or work on art or go back to school and even if youโre having mental health problems you canโt just take an extended vacation a lot of places still donโt consider mental health as actual illness anyway fuck capitalism am i right brother?
The best part of UBI is that you donโt need to see a cent of that money to enjoy the benefits it would provide. Just the shear ability to be able say โI donโt have to work here if I donโt want toโ would give ALL workers the bargaining power to demand more from their employers, higher pay, more benefits. It would be amazing!
good news if youโre a European citizen: thereโs a European Citizensโ Initiative currently collecting signatures to establish unconditional basic income in the EU!
i quote,
Our aim is to establish the introduction of unconditional basic incomes throughout the EU which ensure every personโs material existence and opportunity to participate in society as part of its economic policy. This aim shall be reached while remaining within the competences conferred to the EU by the Treaties.
[โฆ]
We request the EU Commission to make a proposal for unconditional basic incomes throughout the EU, which reduce regional disparities in order to strengthen the economic, social and territorial cohesion in the EU. [x]
for it to pass, it needs at least 1 million signatures total + minimal participation threshold in at least 7 countries. as of today (September 9th 2021) itโs at a little bit above 146k signatures total and 6 more countries need to reach the participation threshold
if youโre a EU citizen please consider signing here (itโs a quick process! you enter your nationality then follow the instructions, took me 5 minutes yesterday)
if youโre not or canโt sign please consider passing on the info to EU citizens you know!! if we manage to get this implemented, it could really improve quality of life for everyone living in the EU
Even though i dont live in europe i hope they make this happen

I think part of the reason why we feel so sad is that we're too far away from raw, numinous experiences. Like you know that post with a picture of the unpolluted night sky where people are reacting in terrified awe not realizing that's what the stars really look like?
I think it's like. You need vivid experiences that can't be easily repeated. You need elemental things. I don't mean this in a crunchy hippie just-try-yoga way I mean this in a way that's like...we're inside all the time and most things we experience are scheduled ahead of time. When there are sidewalks, we follow them, and there's always some boring place to go. You need things that no one has any control over and that no one can sell for money.
You need to be outside in a storm and see lightning strike very close to you. You need to meet a wild creature and have to stand very still and almost not even breathe and watch before it vanishes. You need to be alone somewhere very big. You need to go to a place because it looks interesting and be at the wrong place at the wrong time. You need to climb over a fence instead of going in by the gate. You need to hear the exploding sound of a huge flock of birds flying. You need to watch live theater performed by kids on a low budget. You need to be lost somewhere. You need to be barefoot somewhere. You need to sing with other people who are singing. You need to get soaking wet with all of your clothes on and come inside shivering.
For everyone with social anxiety, this is a reminder that you don't have to be perfect in your interactions with others; you just have to be kind and that's literally it. That's all that's necessary of you. You don't need to say the perfect thing or anticipate what they would want you to say or even exude confidence if you can't.
Social anxiety tells us that we have to be perfect in in our social interactions, but no one is. Social anxiety sets us up for a level of expectation in our social interactions that we have no choice but to fail at, and then fall into a cycle of self-hate for failing and striving even harder for perfection.

At the top of the world, the Inuit culture has developed a sophisticated way to sculpt kids' behavior without yelling or scolding. Could discipline actually be playful?
Back in the 1960s, a Harvard graduate student made a landmark discovery about the nature of human anger.
At age 34, Jean Briggs traveled above the Arctic Circle and lived out on the tundra for 17 months. There were no roads, no heating systems, no grocery stores. Winter temperatures could easily dip below minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Briggs persuaded an Inuit family to โadoptโ her and โtry to keep her alive,โ as the anthropologist wrote in 1970.
At the time, many Inuit families lived similar to the way their ancestors had for thousands of years. They built igloos in the winter and tents in the summer. โAnd we ate only what the animals provided, such as fish, seal and caribou,โ says Myna Ishulutak, a film producer and language teacher who lived a similar lifestyle as a young girl.
Briggs quickly realized something remarkable was going on in these families: The adults had an extraordinary ability to control their anger.
โThey never acted in anger toward me, although they were angry with me an awful lot,โ Briggs told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in an interview.

Across the board, all the moms mention one golden rule: Donโt shout or yell at small children.
Traditional Inuit parenting is incredibly nurturing and tender. If you took all the parenting styles around the world and ranked them by their gentleness, the Inuit approach would likely rank near the top. (They even have a special kiss for babies, where you put your nose against the cheek and sniff the skin.)
The culture views scolding โ or even speaking to children in an angry voice โ as inappropriate, says Lisa Ipeelie, a radio producer and mom who grew up with 12 siblings. โWhen theyโre little, it doesnโt help to raise your voice,โ she says. โIt will just make your own heart rate go up.โ
Even if the child hits you or bites you, thereโs no raising your voice?
โNo,โ Ipeelie says with a giggle that seems to emphasize how silly my question is. โWith little kids, you often think theyโre pushing your buttons, but thatโs not whatโs going on. Theyโre upset about something, and you have to figure out what it is.โ
Traditionally, the Inuit saw yelling at a small child as demeaning. Itโs as if the adult is having a tantrum; itโs basically stooping to the level of the child, Briggs documented.
Elders I spoke with say intense colonization over the past century is damaging these traditions. And, so, the community is working hard to keep the parenting approach intact.
You should absolutely read the whole article, it is a really really good example of how culture shapes our personalities, plus it mentions the importance of using storytelling and play-acting as teaching tools.
once your post hits 5k people will start tagging it as shit like "oh my god bumbo wexler absolutely wrote this" and you google him and it's like. a disgraced ex member of AC/DC
Honestly this is capitalism in a nutshell- apply this to all the fruits of your labour and all the things you need, not just housing.
I live my life under the basic principle that people know their minds, bodies, genders, and orientations better than I do so I just take them at their word when they say they are a thing.
โBut people could be faking for-โ I donโt care. I would rather show someone a kindness they donโt need than not show them one they do.
