The Mexico women’s national football team (sometimes referred to as Las Tri) represents Mexico in international women’s football competition and is controlled by La Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (Mexico Football Federation).

In the 1970s, the team gained popularity, with Mexico finishing 3rd in an unofficial Women’s World Cup held in Italy. Also, in 1971, the team hosted an unofficial women’s World Cup reaching the final, only to lose to Denmark 3–0. An estimated 110,000 people attended the final at Estadio Azteca that day. The team was formed before the 1999 Women’s World Cup and was composed of Mexican and Mexican-American players. The main goal for the team was to qualify for their first World Cup.

Since then, the team has developed and is now ranked 24th in the Women’s FIFA World Ranking. One of the big advantages the team has compared to all others is that they have had one coach, Leonardo Cuéllar, for the past 14 years, which is rare to see in a national team from Mexico.

The team again is re-gaining popularity, as the U-20 team finished in the quarter-finals in the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and a notable 1–0 win over England in which the game was broadcast live in the country.

The team was the host for the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, finishing in second place after a shocking 2–1 victory over the United States. The team has a professional league, the Super Liga Femenil de Futbol, which was established partially to raise the popularity of women’s football in Mexico.

The 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final was the 11th final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the international championship tournament for CONCACAF, the governing body of association football (soccer) in North and Central America.

The match took place on 25 June 2011 and took place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, United States. For the third consecutive final, the United States and Mexico contested the final, Mexico being the defending champions. The final was Mexico’s seventh in Gold Cup history, while it was the United States’ eighth final, and their fourth consecutive final.

For the second straight year, Mexico defended their Gold Cup title against the United States, defeating them 4–2 in the final. Mexico’s Pablo Barrera netted Mexico’s first and third goals, while Andrés Guardado and Giovani dos Santos tallied the second and fourth goals, respectively. Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan scored the United States’ two goals in the match. The loss marked only the second time in 12 years the United States lost to Mexico on home soil. As Gold Cup champions, Mexico earned a berth into the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil as the representative from CONCACAF.

History by the Decade - The 1930 FIFA World Cup

Mexico first participated in the FIFA World Cup in 1930, seven years after the establishment of the national team. Notwithstanding later scandal and poor conditions of their athletes, Mexico would first go against France, losing 4-1. Mexico’s sole scorer in the game, as well as the first World Cup goal for the team, came from Juan “El trompo” Carreño.
