Last night, walking home from my writing class at 9:30, I found myself alone on a stretch of Lincoln Ave between Irving Park and Montrose. It’s a safe neighborhood and the times I’ve felt uncomfortable have been few and far between, but it’s always disconcerting to be out at night, look around, and realize there’s nobody close by. 

Then a man rounded the corner off one of the side streets, walking briskly, hands stuffed into his pockets. He was about a block ahead of me, walking toward me. I didn’t feel too nervous, but like most women, I instinctively held my purse a little bit tighter against me, threw back my shoulders so the full effect of my five feet and eleven inches would be apparent, and put on my “Do. Not. Even” face. 

But almost as soon as he saw me, he purposefully strode to the edge of the sidewalk, basically as far on the other side of it as he could be from me, and said, “Excuse me,” clearly, loudly, and kindly, as he passed, leaving an exaggerated amount of distance between us. I was so appreciative that I wanted to stop him and thank him for taking responsibility of the situation and going out of his way to make me feel safe, but of course, that would have made me the creeper. So, whoever you are, fellow Lincoln Square resident, thanks for respecting women & their safety. It means more than you know.
