Photojournalism Spring 2013 Multimedia Projects

Below are featured student multimedia projects from two of the photojournalism classes at The Meek School of Journalism and New Media at The University of Mississippi. The course introduces students to visual storytelling, and challenges them to not only capture storytelling moments, but pair visuals with audio to produce multimedia content using Final Cut Pro or Premier.

"Memory Makers," by Kayleigh Skinner.

Kayleigh introduces us to Memory Makers, a day-respite service for adults with Alzheimer’s in Oxford, Miss. Her visuals document support, love and care, which allows viewers to connect with the story.

"Steve Kolbus: A Delta Blues Man," by Jared Burleson.

Jared traveled to the Mississippi Delta, where he met Blues Musician Steve Kolbus. Jared spent time getting to know Steve beyond his stage presence, gaining access to document Steve's everyday. What Jared observed and decided to show us is not just the blues side of this musician, but his happiness.

"The Tree of Knowledge," by Bentley Burns.

Bentley Burns spent many days documenting Lisa Witt's school in Baldwyn, Miss. that is connected to her home.  His time spent in the classroom allowed Bentley to capture moments that bring viewers into the classroom, and show students in their natural classroom environment, not paying attention to the camera.

"For the Love of a Daughter," by Bridge Leigh.

Bridge Leigh read a facebook post about Carly "Boo" Wright, of Memphis, who was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in February, 2013. He contacted Carly's mother, Sharon, began meeting with the family at their home, and spent time at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital on Carly's appointment days. What started out as a story about Carly's battle with cancer, resulted in a story about a mother's love for her daughter.

"The Life Oxford," by Blake Johnson.

Blake documented a church in Oxford, Miss. that he describes as, "a different kind of church." Blake's visuals show the connection of people in prayer, music and community.

"Connecting to an Unexpected Home," by Kristen Stephens.

Kristen documented Tanna Tan, a University of Mississippi anthropology student who is writing her thesis on the people of Magnoloia Grove Monastery in Batesville, Miss. Kristen goes beyond the thesis project to show us Tan's peace through the teachings and people she has learned from.

"The View from Home Plate: A Homegrown Yankee Remembers," by Miriam Cresswell.

Miriam spent time with Jake Gibbs, an Ole Miss Alumnus who was the nation's first All-American in two sports, a catcher for the Yankees, Ole Miss baseball coach and football recruiter. Miriam's story gives viewer's a look into Gibbs' life.

"A Passion for Puppies," by John Chicoli.

John introduces us to Megan Walker, an employee at the Oxford Lafayette Humane Society. John's photos show us the Megan's special relationship with dogs and her commitment to the them in her every day.
