Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?
“I confess that I hate how they present Logan Echolls. I had a feeling when the movie came out, again when they started promoting the new series and with the new trailer, it seems definite to me: they oversexualize Logan. I know some may find his new looks attractive (well, not me), I get that it gains more viewers and also that maybe the actor wants to show off… but still. The reason I fell in love with Logan was his character (development), his wits and his chemistry with Veronica. It’s not that I think all of this is lost for the new series, but it doesn’t seem to be in the limelight right now. That bothers me a lot as the series was so much more once upon a time and now they do everything to be attractive for well… whom exactly?”
VMHQ STATEMENT RE: REVIVAL
Marshmallows,
Individually, most of the librarians have been rooting for Veronica Mars since the Pilot first aired in 2004. Collectively, we formed the fan group, Veronica Mars Headquarters, in order to continue promoting our beloved show by having rewatches, creating contests and giveaways, organizing fanfic challenges - anything we could think of to support the fandom and help it grow.
Needless to say, we were very excited when we heard the news of a revival, and we are sure you can imagine how we now feel in the aftermath. After months of being sold one type of product in the marketing– an empowering story for women, a strong female grappling with the direction she wants to go in life, the importance of mental health, and the exploration of a committed hard-won relationship–we were given something entirely different.
This bait-and-switch has left many feeling betrayed.
All of the things we admired and loved about the character of Veronica Mars were gone. Instead of a heroine who survived trauma, while managing to be both strong and have a generous heart, the writers removed not only her marshmallow center, but fifteen years’ worth of character growth.
Veronica’s problematic behavior toward Weevil would take too many paragraphs to describe. There was no loving concern for her father. While he was struggling with memory loss and fearing the worst, she just seemed ambivalent. Spending time with her best friend only bored her. (Wallace was her rock, now he seems like an annoyance because he had the audacity to form his own life. Based on her behavior now, would Wallace STILL feel it was worth getting taped to a flagpole?) She showed no genuine emotion toward any of the people she is supposed to love.
They seemed to forget Veronica used to encourage Logan to seek professional help, and that she holds a psych degree from Stanford; they decided to instead have her ridicule Logan for working on his mental health and mockingly ask him if he was taking drugs. Yes, we know the way this is portrayed is supposed to show us Veronica’s position is wrong– but this is simply not the Veronica Mars we’ve known all these years. This is a character who resembles Veronica, but has very few of the qualities that made her so great.
We think the revival regresses Veronica’s character to this bitter shell of a person, in order to show us an abbreviated version of her journey to mental health? However, they negate the entire message in the last ten minutes of the revival. With that ending, they tell us, it doesn’t matter how she works to improve herself, because people like Veronica (and Logan) don’t deserve a happy ending. Bottom line - why bother? It is nihilistic and, frankly, depressing. It is certainly NOT the story we need in our current social climate.
We do understand that sometimes the death of a major character is unavoidable on a television show– an actor wants to leave or the story dictates this decision. However, this usually happens during the original run, and when it’s done, the showrunners and writers try to handle the situation with care and regard for their fans. Unless the death was for shock value only, they at least allow space for the audience to grieve.
Veronica Mars is different. The death of Logan Echolls did not happen during the original run. This happened after fans spent seven years campaigning to have their canceled show resurrected. This happened after fans funded a movie through Kickstarter in order to get their closure. This happened after fans spent another five years championing the franchise so we could spend more time with our favorite fictional people. This happened in the last ten minutes without any preparation or warning. It was not part of the plot. It was not a hero’s death. Logan Echolls was fridged to re-traumatize our heroine. It was an ignominious end for a beloved character.
Our takeaway from the revival is that the showrunner and writers are not only saying trauma victims like Logan and Veronica do not deserve a happy ending. They are also telling us stories about women are only interesting if they are victims. They are saying women can’t have both challenging careers and partners who love them. We find these messages demoralizing and degrading - the complete antithesis of what we thought this show was about.
We’d like to encourage our followers to not buy into such damaging stereotypes. It is okay for you to feel sad and disappointed. We certainly do.
We strongly disagree with the direction the Hulu revival took, and it’s hindered our desire to love and promote the product. While we debate our next steps, we have decided to put all our social media accounts on indefinite hiatus and will not be commenting or posting about Veronica Mars.
However, one thing we’re clear on is, we want to support you–our wonderful, loyal fandom. To that end, we are keeping our Discord server open so people have a place to connect (https://discord.gg/mEZWSZZ). We’ve experienced an influx of people over the past two days all seeking an outlet to express their feelings, and we hope it is offering a small measure of comfort. We are also considering hosting another fanfic challenge specifically for season 4 fix-its, in order to help people process through writing and reading.
Please practice self-care. If you’re having trouble with your mental health, please think WWLD (what would Logan do) and do not be ashamed to seek help. Here’s a link of resources to help you get started: https://www.nami.org/Find-Support/NAMI-HelpLine/Top-HelpLine-Resources
We love you, marshmallows, and we will keep you posted as plans coalesce. In the meantime, please know we appreciate all of you; thank you for all the fun and laughter over the past fifteen years.
Love,
The VMHQ Librarians
Veronica Mars
I just watched the Veronica Mars final - finally. I spoilered myself beforehand accidentally... I was prepared. This is why it took me so long to watch, why I didn’t enjoy the season as much as I initially thought I would. Anyway. What’s wrong with it? The better question would be probably: What could they have done worse? Starters: I didn’t like the movie much because it appeared to be a treasure hunt for old characters without good reason and a semi-good plot. Fan service naturally - I accepted it and don’t value it any less. At least it gave me closure - a happy end. What I didn’t realize and didn’t appreciate enough at the time (as I see know) was that they played out much of the character strengths - even the supporting ones. They stayed in character. Some of them had not many appearances but at least it were good ones. This time they presented a lot of new characters I couldn’t care less about (maybe Nicole, but she wasn‘t given any closure either). None of the beloved characters beside Keith gotten anything good or real. I really feel bad for Wallace. Weevil got his few moments but not nearly enough. And what pisses me off the most how badly they were handled. They appeared, served and were never seen again like... what? So Dick got an acting job somewhere else... Aha. Thanks for nothing. Nicole broke off properly and gone without being mentioned by Veronica (thanks for this reminder how shitty she was this season). Let's talk about Wallace... he could have been in this season or not. Wouldn’t have made a difference for anyone. And that’s so sad. We got so many scenes with Big Dick instead - what for? I could go on and on with this shitty character treatment and development. Well I won’t. Because in my opinion the root of the problem is not necessarily the character design its more a symptom. Instead of giving us the season we expected and loved (a big plot underlined by many small cases which made Veronica Veronica and the other characters shine), they gave us this one big murder mystery short series without properly thinking it threw. Instead of Veronica investigating and being in the focus all the time we had many persons following one and the same case. Well, let’s just say: Wouldn’t have missed the Mexicans, wouldn’t have missed the probably very expansive sidekick of Big Dick. Wouldn’t have missed the Murderheads... Really, I wouldn’t have. They tried a different perspective here, new writing. I guess it’s because times change, right? People do as well? Worth a shot. What we’re used seeing determines what we like - well, we used to see a well-scripted Veronica Mars. This wasn’t it. If we wanted to see some detective murder case we could watch one of many one-season series that pop out of nowhere right now - but we didn’t want that. Well, I didn’t want it. I wanted good old Veronica Mars. Same Witt, interesting cases, good characters. If they would have gone the old ways you could have given all the characters so much more space. In episode three comes a case up where Veronica needs Weevil and they can figure out there problems (not solving them, they get the opportunity briefly in episode 5), in episode six Wallace need Veronicas to help for something in the school (and she tells him how boring she finds his life and he can tell her to back off because it’s none of her business to judge and that they can have together-time like they used to without her being anything near a healthy environment) - you get the idea, right? Classic PI stuff. They screwed that chance up for what? Red Hearings as some of the others are calling it. The idea of the bombing was good, but it wasn’t good enough to carry the show we loved through a whole season. And this is why I wouldn’t have liked this season - but there was hope you know. Maybe it would have been back next season - all these things wouldn’t have mattered if they just sticked to the Status Quo ( I wouldn’t have needed the wedding, honest). Instead they showed us a total screwed LoVe - but we’re used to that, right? They need to be screwed up thats part of what they are. And as I agree with many of you, Veronica treated Logan especially badly for no reason, I think that was something genius. This was a relationship they could actually have transfered into next season, that was adult. Even though I think they missed big opportunities here for Jason Dohring to show off more than his muscles (his amazing acting skills for example) and even though it was getting on my nerves how Veronica tried to justified her no constantly and badly - it was kind of realistic. It was interesting to see that one was developping and the other wasn’t. And instead of figuring this out ... they killed him off? What for? I totally agree with all of you that their reasoning is total bs. I mean, come on. The adult thing to do wouldn’t need a killing - it would have been a therapy (or even a break up; a mature one where they stay friends afterwards). If you didn’t like the dynamics of a married PI - why didn’t they remembered that they gave the husband the perfect job for that. Just imagine having Logan away for a few episodes, come back, having them in couples therapy. It could have been a perfectbliss without him being killed and Veronica going backwards by reacting the exact same way x years ago when her friend was murdered. Congratulation all you did was making it unrealistic- by having a character that is probably never going to change. Worst part? They didn’tt take time. They didn’t show it. It is so cruel, so shitty, so full of fear. I can only think of two reasons to do it that way 1) it was easier to shoot, an easy get out for a character you don’t want anymore. It’s cheap 2) they wanted to keep all options open and thats just... wrong. Let’s see how they like it and then we decide finally. I swear to good if they show up next season and tell us it was all a pr-stunt or it was planned all along - that would just be stupid. So there is no way this can end well. Therefore.. Veronica Mars, we used to be friends....
“Shortly before Remus’s eleventh birthday, no less a person than Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, arrived uninvited on the Lupins’ doorstep. Flustered and frightened, Lyall and Hope tried to block his entrance, but somehow, five minutes later, Dumbledore was sitting at the fireside, eating crumpets and playing Gobstones with Remus.(…) Dumbledore told the Lupins that he saw no reason why Remus should not come to school, and described the arrangements that he had made to give the boy a safe and secure place for his transformations.”

Reblogging again because this is the ONLY “fashion through time” video that does it right. All the others glamorize/modernize the eras WAY too much, esp. considering they’re claiming historical accuracy. This is the only one that truly nails it.

Well, my philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.
Harry is so grumpy and dorky in the books. When drawing him as an adult I, however, think of Ginny’s influence on his life when they got together after the war. How she must have awakened his good mood and confidence (which developed his sexy/hot side eventually). That’s why I love drawing this couple. How they complete each other and especially how better he gets because he’s with her. He’s still grumpy and has a terrible mood, but I like to think he smiles very often now. And when he says good morning to everyone they all look surprised “You seem in a very good mood, Mr. Potter” but happier about him being happy. On the other hand I think Harry made Ginny more mature and down to earth. Someone who’s really concentrate on her job and family, maybe even more altruistic about other’s people well being. Someone who can be fucking serious and intense in some situations. I also love to imagine Ginny going to practice in a very bad mood. Grumpy as hell during all day. But when she gets home Harry is in a good mood to balance the house. And that’s why I believe they work pretty well together
“Hermione took out a list of subjects and titles she had decided to search while Ron strode off down a row of books and started pulling them off the shelves at random. Harry wandered over to the Restricted Section.”
Okay but this is legit a summary of how the trio works: Hermione is methodical and organised, Ron is “fuck this I’m winging it #yolo”, and Harry looks for something illegal to do.

Cant reblog this enough
I love that this shows both sides, how society is ingrained to see women as baby-makers and men as walking wallets who’s only worth is if they make good cash. Both are equally demeaning and limiting in different ways.
My advice? Bring a book. Bring a book when you have meetings, bring a book when you go walking in the park. Bring a book to a first date. You don’t have to read it, that isn’t the point. Just having it with you is enough.
