If you have read enough shoujo manga, specially those of the 90s, you know there’s one popular type of male lead who is the problematic overbearing asshole delinquent who is “wild”, rude and unpredictable to mostly everyone but has a soft spot for the female protagonist who is the opposite of him despite bullying or negging her sometimes. He wouldn’t easily show that soft spot because of his pride, though. Still have some considerably chill and jovial moments when they soften up, and is ardently protective and devoted to the main character.

If you have grasped that, then you know what Caenis was modelled after, and Wodime taking the spot of the shoujo protagonist.
