I once had a dream where John Linnell was the guest on a talk show hosted by my high school algebra teacher wearing an animal suit. Linnell dragged himself across the floor, climbed on a wheelie chair, and said, “I’m missing my spine today.” He was referring to not having Flansburgh with him.

“I am not certain Hearing Aid means THAT much to them compared to say Birdhouse or Istanbul…” Flans, this made me laugh out loud because I just finished typing up a blurb about how much Hearing Aid means to me.
JF: hey-I like Hearing Aid-and I very much like the short new version that's in the show. GRIMEY.

The TMBG zine is coming along! Just a little update/peek for those who showed interest. All I have left to do is stick everything together and smack the text in before I make copies. Initially the plan was to set up an Etsy shop to distribute it to folks or something like that, but I cannot feel good about asking anybody to pay for it. I am not a professional. I am just a little guy. I just want to reach other queer people that like They Might Be Giants, and maybe bring a little comfort to them.
So, uh, that being said, drop me a message if you want a free copy! I can mail it anywhere in the US and I’ll see what I can do about international mail. Never tried it before, but hey. Here’s to firsts.

i found this through the tmbg tumblr page, are you still making a zine?
Hi! I am! Unfortunately a bunch of real-life type stuff has happened in pretty rapid succession lately, and so I haven’t been able to put in as much work on the zine as I’ve wanted to, but it is definitely happening. 💛
the cap’m+dr worm are like the same kind of song. song about someone who has self-image problems but the problem isn’t their own self-image, they have a very clear self-image, the problem is just getting everyone else 2 believe them. and by that i mean they are transgender
are you listening 2 me. do you understand
welcome to another installment of “johnny makes an extremely long addition to a post several days later” this one is called The Cap’m Is Transgender And Autistic And I Will Show You How. hi clarence i’m taking over your post
so i think it’s worth noting first that there is a bit of discussion about ableism and transphobia, not too in depth but i want to say that. it’s worth noting second that this is extremely self indulgent and therefore less well-constructed/organized than the last wave analysis. also sorry for not analyzing doctor worm but i think everyone pretty much knows that it’s a transgender song by now. also i’m not even listening to the cap’m right now. anyway let’s get on with it. the first verse!:
Do you think there’s somebody out there Someone else who’s better than the one you’ve got? Well there’s not, there’s not
this song has a lot of egotism to it, evident from the very beginning, but i see it as self-assurance. the narrator, who i WILL be referring to as cap’m, has a lot of confidence in their identity. they know who they are, they are sure of it, and for the most part content with it… except that other people don’t seem to take them seriously. however, they know that they are irreplaceable as a person, i.e., there’s nobody out there better than the “one you’ve got” (cap’m).
When I talk you keep looking away from me ‘Cause you probably think that I’m high on pot But I’m not, I’m not
again, most other people don’t take their identity seriously (or them as a person, because they’re autistic). obviously, this is irritating. they insist that they should be taken seriously, that they’re just like any other person. cap’m saying “you probably think that I’m high on pot” could also be a reference to the idea that vaccines cause autism or that hrt is “body-destroying”.
Look me over, I’m the Cap’m You say it’s such a joke But I don’t see you laughing
the point is already here to be honest but i want to break this song down lyric by lyric because. teehee. anyway, again cap’m reiterates their identity. people around them don’t take them seriously, call it a joke or a phase, but are clearly just uncomfortable by their self-confidence and unwillingness to conform to an identity that they are not. because… why should they?? in the third instance of this stanza the second line is “You act like it’s a joke”, communicating essentially the same idea. HOWEVER, the second instance changes the second and third lines:
Look me over, I’m the Cap’m Go ahead and mess with me You’ll find out what will happ’m
where that trans/autistic rage comes back in full swing! they are not going to put up with any transphobic or ableist bullshit because, again, why should they? it’s undeserved and they know it. they’re tired of being told to “just ignore it”. they’re tired of being mistreated and pushed aside. they want to fight back and they’re going to!! also, as a treat just for me, the fact that it’s “happ’m” and not “happen” is further proof for the autism. because it’s a forced rhyme. that’s completely self indulgent but to me i’m right and that’s what matters. also before this instance is the little stylophone break, and stylophone is like. autism instrument. at least for me because the beeps are stimmy
People seem to think you can’t be called the Cap’m Unless you drive a boat Well, I don’t, I don’t
this part happens twice with very minimal difference (”I don’t” gets repeated at the end of the song, with the second instance) so i’m only covering it once. this stanza is. hmmm. very very transgender. they point at that people have very specific rules on what an identity means, but they’re arbitrary. cap’m flaunts the fact that they don’t fit these rules, but are still The Cap’m (i’m being purposefully vague because this could be interpreted with more than one identity, of course). it also reads as not fitting into social norms/rules but still being just as human as anyone else.
Sit beside me at the helm Yeah, this is what I call the helm And this button here is the fast-forward button
autism autism autism autism autism. it was actually this verse and the last lyric that made me go “ohhh, autism.” it’s never actually said WHAT cap’m is calling the helm, but what matters is that they have an association that maybe isn’t conventional. they have to repeat it and confirm that they call it “the helm”. also, them talking about which button is the fast-forward button could be interpreted as infodumping… how exactly this line fits into being trans is a little more loose, but i can see it as describing their body in a way that feels most comfortable to them. also you can hear the stadium clapping in the background here. i don’t have a way to tie it in i just like that loop in the back of the song
Did you say what I think you just said My hat looks good on me? I agree, I agree
Trans fucking gender. a huge part of their identity is… their presentation! and presenting how THEY want, even though other people don’t always agree with or support them. but here, they’ve been faced with a compliment. this doesn’t always happen, and it’s really appreciated, and it boosts their confidence. of course they agree, because the hat in question makes them feel euphoric. to have someone else like what they’re wearing is even better!! and it invigorates their spirit to keep insisting about their identity, because honestly, cap’m is not gonna stop until they’ve won.
and there’s my giant(lol) post about how the cap’m is transgender and autistic. and they are sexy and awesome and cool for it. and they know they are. thank you for your time
an addition from @bryce-lynch i think this important. cap’m enrichment activities include repeating themself and being looked over
