The nice thing about being part of a community made up mostly of women is that people are held accountable for their actions.
When I see an athlete or someone else doing something problematic, I know that when I comment on it in our small community, people will take it seriously and discuss the issue instead of pretending it doesn't exist or brushing it off ("the two division champ can do whateverhe wants"). It can be tiring at times when everything out of the ordinary becomes a huge commotion, but at least it opens up space for conversation and understanding. At the end of the day, we are all people, and there is no way to solve a problem if we don't admit that it - the problem- exists.
As someone who has been part of several male-dominated fandoms, it's a breath of fresh air to see that conversations can be a real way to resolve conflict and set boundaries for what can and cannot be done and said within environments that are so intrinsically linked to the main subject of conversation (an athlete's professional and personal life in this case).
Messy writing and all over the place, but i hope y'all get what i mean
