four ways old clothes make your dog happy

ah, pinterest. our old friend is a wealth of diy inspiration. granted, most of it we would never in a million years do, but it’s inspiring none-the-less. in reality, we believe the basic criteria to a good diy idea are these three things: do we like it? yes. do we need it? maybe. is it easy? absolutely!

that said, below are four wonderful (and easy) ways to upcycle your clothes to make your dog happy!

this idea is so easy you don’t even need written directions. just follow the one step below (two if you count buttoning as a step, which obviously we don’t) and your dog will be more dapper than ever.

never ones to miss out on a chance to chase, tug and chew, our pups love this toy. it’s definitely not for heavy chewers, unless you make it out of very tough material like denim, but it’s easy to make, smells like you and keeps a little cash in your pocket. win, win, win.

this might be our favorite of the bunch. definitely for small dogs, a quick snip off your sleeve and you’re in business.

4// diy dog boots from romp rescue

okay, we may have broken our rules just little bit on this one. not quite as easy as the first three, it definitely requires a little bit of skill. but we love this one – it keeps your dog’s paws safe from the cold, ice and salt in the winter, and the heat in the summer.

pattern play: nightswimming

this is still one of my favorite songs – it reminds me of summer & writing in journals, and feeling like i would never be a grown up…(and then you become an adult & it’s all “youth is wasted on the young.”  i used to hate when my parents said that, and recently i actually heard myself say the same thing.  oy.) thank you r.e.m. for this song!

old dog bed tutorial #3: zipper pouch #1

when your dog bed has seen better days & you are ready to get a new one – make a few zipper pouches out of the old one! depending on the size duvet you have, and how big you want to make your bag, you can make anywhere from 6 – a lot of zipper pouches!before you can really get started, you need to rip apart your old duvet. all you need to do is cut through the piping & cut all the way around, so you can get 2 large pieces of fabric (one from the top, one from the bottom.) (you can also salvage the 5” gusset, and use it for another project in the future!)

supplies zipper – you can use any size, for this tutorial, i used a 9” zipper.

outer fabric (cut from your dog bed) based on the length of your zipper, cut 2 panels out of your old dog duvet. for instance-if you have a 9” zipper, cut 2 pieces of fabric 9” wide by whatever length suits you! for this tutorial, i made the length 6”. i cut 2 pieces that are 9” x 6”.

lining fabric choose a thin cotton as your interior-otherwise it will be difficult to sew the zipper on. cut the same size as the outer fabric.

zipper end covers (use the lining fabric for these) 1.5” x 3” – cut 2

instructions take your zipper end cover and iron in half. and then iron a 1/4” seam on both sides.

cover the end of your zipper & sew along the edge, to seal the ends. do this with the other zipper end cover too.

make a fabric sandwich. lay the outer fabric face up. lay the zipper face down on top of that. lay the lining fabric on top of that, face down. all you want to align is the top of these 3 items.  you will notice that the top of the zipper end covers will peek over the top, which is fine.  sew along the zipper using your zipper foot.

flip the outer fabric over, and iron right by the zipper teeth. it will look like this.

zipper sandwich part 2 (you’re almost there!) lay your other piece of outer fabric face up. lay the zipper (with the other bits sewn on it) face down along the edge that has not be sewn. lay the lining fabric on top, face down. remember, just align the tops of these 3 pieces. when you are done, iron again & top stitch for an extra classy look.

now it’s time to wrap it up! open the zipper half way (this is for later, but do it now!)

take the two outer pieces and pin them together, good sides facing each other. the zipper will be folded at the teeth. now pin the lining fabric together. you are going to sew all the way around (leaving a 2” gap at the bottom of the lining, so you can turn everything)

the four upsides to upcycling

upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the repurposing of useless or unwanted items in a new (and often better) way. and to be candid, there is no downside to upcycling – it’s all up! molly mutt was born on the concept of upcycling, and we have the maker faire to thank for that.

in the spring of 2008 we knew that we wanted to develop a dog bed cover that would be long-lasting, attractive, and awesome. the challenge we were having was that unlike human beds with standardized sizes (king. queen, full, twin) there is no such thing in the dog bed world. what one dog bed company called “medium” was a different dimension from what another company was selling. awesome.

so, off we went to the maker faire and there we encountered some really fantastic and creative minds. there were techies and robot makers. home-grown space travelers and publishers. the common theme at the event was creativity and using, or re-using, items in creative ways! we had found an inspirational never-never land!

down one aisle were some of the coolest looking clothes we’d ever seen. “this is re-fashioning,” the creator said. “even after we donate millions of articles of clothing every year to goodwill and others, amercians still throw away tons of clothing – textiles make up as much as 7% of our landfills. our mission is to save some of those textiles, cut them up, and piece together new clothes that might appeal to someone.”

we soon learned that upcycling has four enormous benefits:

Upcycling keeps discarded materials and waste from ever entering the landfill.

Upcycling is even better than recycling: upcycling requires no additional energy or process to transform the article for re-use. This means reduced air pollution, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Upcycling allows you to keep the items you love, breathing new life and usefulness into them.

Upcycling saves our communities’ money, reducing costs associated with recycling and landfill management.

we knew that dogs love to sleep on top of a pile of laundry (who doesn’t?!), but it was at the maker faire we realized just how many fabrics everyone has in closets, drawers and garages that are no longer needed or used.

and as we walked away from the re-fashioning booth the idea struck: if we could develop a mesh bag that was durable enough to hold these unused items, we could shape that bag to form the mattress sizes we needed. the mesh would allow everything to be washable without having to be taken out of the cover. the best part is that anyone could do it – we’d save them a lot of money, and their dogs would be thrilled to sleep where they always wanted to be.

it’s not an exaggeration to say that without learning about upcycling and re-fashioning there might not be a molly mutt. in our very small way, we know we’ve made pets happier, and kept lots of textiles from becoming part of the waste stream.

pattern play: lion’s roar (and the dogs who love it!)

we can always feel the love we have for our dogs, even in the stormy days life can bring. a love so strong that at times we feel like we could roar – an explosion of emotion for these little warm bodies that change our lives and give us a place to call home.

five things a dog’s nose knows

the power is immense! a small body part, granted, but a dog’s nose has such talent – more than we could ever dream of having. in constant motion, the nose of a dog has 300 million olfactory receptors allowing it to smell 10,000 – 100,000 times better than us mere mortals. it can smell the past, present and future, find lost items (and people) over vast distances and save lives. and it’s just a nose!

so what does this mean for those of us who share a home with a dog’s nose?

they know your specific smell

that’s right – you are one stinky person. and just like a fingerprint, your specific smell is a unique identifier. having nothing to do with your choice of perfume, deodorant or detergent, your body secretes it’s own odor that your dog knows is completely you. in fact, to your dog, you’re pretty much just one big smell.

from one of our favorite books, inside of a dog: what dogs see, smell, and know by alexandra horowitz –

“humans stink. the human armpit is one of the most profound source of odor produced by any animal; our breath is a confusing melody os smells; our genitals reek. the organ that covers our body – our skin – is itself covered in sweat and sebaceous glands, which are regularly churning out fluid and oils holding our particular brand of scent.”

they can smell emotions

maybe. the jury’s still out on this one, but some scientific research indicates that dogs can identify the scents of adrenaline and cortisol that are triggered by our fight or flight response. as strong emotions overwhelm you, your heart rate increases, your blood rushes and all the chemicals that go along with stress, anxiety and fear rise more quickly to the skin’s surface. this may be why your dog always knows when to stand a little closer and stay a little longer.

they can smell illness

cancer, epilepsy, narcolepsy, migraines and diabetes, dogs’ keen sense of smell has saved many lives due to their ability to detect variations in hormone and chemical levels in the human body. the stories are endless and are proven out by study after study: dogs can detect cancer with up to 95% accuracy, can alert their owners when a seizure or migraine is about to strike and can detect even small decreases in blood sugar levels.

they can smell when you are almost home

your dog can smell you coming. because dogs use their nose to smell what is coming towards them on a breeze, they can tell who they will meet, what adventures lie just up ahead and who’s already been there. again from inside of a dog: “their perception of time includes not just the scene currently happening, but also a snatch of the just-happened and the up-ahead. the present has a shadow of the past and a ring of the future about it.”

they are comforted by your smell

your distinct scent smells like love. it is home to them and a comfort to them when they are alone, scared, anxious or just ready to rest. no wonder they will choose to nap on a pile of laundry rather than their own bed! see how creating a bed stuffed with your clothes can be the perfect resting place for your dog. it’s all about the nose!

old dog bed tutorial #2: potholders

here is another easy sewing project you can make from your old dog bed fabric!

instructions pdf here

finished size: 9.5” length x 7.5“ width seam allowance: .25”

materials 1.  scraps for the front – 9″ wide (length will vary) – this is the creative part & you can use as many or as few as you want! 2.  muslin or plain cotton (to sew your scraps on) – 8.5″ x 11″ 3.  fabric for the reverse side – 10″ x 8″ 4.  thin cotton batting – 10″ x 8″ 5.  heat resistant batting (can be bought at any fabric store or on amazon!) – 10″ x 8″

instructions lay first scrap on muslin a.  place second piece on first one, right sides together b.  stitch a 1/2 inch seam. press second piece down towards bottom of uncovered fabric c.  place third piece on the second one, right sides together. stitch a 1/2 inch seam. press third piece down towards bottom d.  trim this top piece to 10” x 8”

you now have four 10” x 8” pieces: top (the pieced one), the back, the thin cotton batting and the heat resistant batting.

make a stack of these pieces in this order:

1. thin cotton batting (bottom)

2. top (right side up)

3. back (right side down, facing top right side)

4. heat resistant batting (top)

pin together and stitch 1/2′ seam, leaving an opening on the bottom about 3” wide to turn it.

trim batting edges close to the seams. clip corners off. turn right-side out and press, pressing in the opening to make the edges meet.

pin the seams to hold the pieces in place. stitch down one or both sides of each seam where the scraps meet. edge stitch around the whole potholder. you’re done!!

six ways to help your dog sleep

sleep is essential to a calm, healthy, patient dog. if it’s true that a tired dog is a good dog, then a sleeping dog is even better! by providing your dog with appropriate activities to use up some of her energy and then supporting healthy sleep habits, you will lower incidents of bad behavior and increase your dog’s quality of life.

the first step is to give your dog ways to expend some of their energy, and this can be either physical or mental, or both. in fact, mental stimulation will tire your dog out faster than any physical exercise, but their body needs the activity as well so be sure to include a mix of both in your weekly schedule. the four basic categories of activity include:

games – think fetch, hide and seek, tug of war and chase. these are all interactive and highly physical. this means your dog is getting a double dose of activity – thinking and acting. the key is to find a game your dog loves and you enjoy playing as well.

exercise – any time your dog has the opportunity to go for a walk, a hike or a run, she is using her brain along with her body. new sights, sounds and smells provide great mental stimulation while her body gets a much-needed workout.

puzzles – whether you buy a treat puzzle from the store or create a puzzling game on your own, your dog will love using her problem solving skills to get what she wants. never ones to like things handed to them on silver platters – or in silver bowls for that matter – dogs love a good challenge. and when the end result is their favorite treat or a delicious meal it makes the game all the better.

training – both basic training and trick training help your dog use her brain and quickly tire her out. it takes a lot of thinking, remembering, problem solving and judgment, so be sure to keep it a positive experience and keep the sessions short – think 10 minutes. and only use positive reinforcement. think of it like this: your dog doesn’t speak english, so saying it louder or scarier won’t help at all.

so now your pup is exhausted and ready to rest. how can you make the environment as peaceful as possible?

location – create a space for her that’s out of the main room, away from foot traffic and in a quieter part of the house. even if she doesn’t nap there all the time, having the option to escape for a small amount of time from the sounds of the household can provide the opportunity for longer naps.

bedding – the right bedding can make all the difference. warm, clean beds that smell like the person they love can reduce anxiety and increase relaxation. just think of it as a huge pile of laundry fresh out of the dryer – who can resist that?

sleep is part of a healthy life, so be sure to join your pup during nap time every once in a while!

when life seems to be flying by, it’s normally our dogs that help us stop to take a breath. their quiet (sometimes) presence reminds us of what’s important and how we want our lives to be. we find ourselves daydreaming about being transported to somewhere exotic, relaxing on a beach, slowing time down to enjoy.

we’re a mutty bunch!

it’s probably not hard to guess, but molly mutt is more than just the name of our business; it’s a declaration of love. mutts have filled our lives, making them richer, fuller and so much more fun – with the likes of pickle, bean and bacon, there is no room for boredom or loneliness in our homes!

and to be clear, to us, “mutt” isn’t a type of dog. a mutt is every dog. from the shaggy, scruffy mixes, to the sleek, shiny pure breds, they are all mutts to us because it’s about the undeniable love – of unknown origin – that compels us to share our homes and beds with them, feed and care for them, and come to see life as complete only if they are a part of it.

old dog bed tutorial #1: tote

let’s start with something fabulous.

yes, our dog beds are amazing & durable & la di dah di dah. but eventually, they need to be retired—either because they are loved to the bone, or you just want a new one.

i faced a dilemma when this happened the first time—a few years ago. and because the whole brand is based upon the “don’t-throw-it-away” ethos regarding textiles-i found myself in quite a quandary. the old duvet was just too exhausted to keep washing & using anymore (and i was ready to move on to something new)

what to do with all that fabric?

over the years, i have used the old duvets to make a trillion things-using the fabric for lots of awesome (and easy) sewing projects-which after 476 years, i have finally written up & am ready to share!

let’s start with an easy one-a tote!

instructions pdf here pattern pieces here

finished size: 12” wide x 7“ depth x 14.75” height seam allowance: .5”

materials instructions-pockets 3/4 yard outside fabric 3/4 yard inside fabric coordinating thread

cut (print pattern pieces & cut around them) outside fabric – 2 front panels, 1 long inside pocket, 1 short inside pocket, 2 handles inside fabric – 2 inside panels, 1 long outside pocket

instructions: pockets

1. long inside pocket – fold fabric in half, right sides together. iron. sew all the way around leaving a 2″ gap on bottom.

turn fabric right side out. topstitch top. sew onto front outside panel, 4″ up from the bottom

2. long inside pocket – same as above. sew onto front inside panel, 4″ up from bottom.

3. short inside pocket – same as #1. sew onto front inside panel, 6″ up from bottom

instructions: handles fold fabric in half, right sides together. iron. sew along both sides-leaving opening on both short ends. turn right side out. iron. topstitch.

instructions: outside 1. sew front outside panel with pocket to bottom panel (right sides together). sew front panel #2 (one without pocket) to bottom panel (right sides together). when you’re done, it will look like this:

2. sew side panel #1 to front panel 1, back panel & front panel 2.

3. sew side panel #2 to front panel 1, back panel & front panel 2. after this step, you should have the outside of your tote, without handles. 

4. time to sew on those handles! end end should be 2″ from the side seam. sew on the outside of bag (you will be hiding this seam in the final step)

instructions: inside 1. same instructions as outside with one difference! when you get to step #3, leave a 4″ gap in the middle, so you can turn the tote when it’s all done. don’t forget this gap!!

instructions: you’re almost done! put your outside tote with handles inside of the inner tote. so right sides together. i know, that sounds so confusing. it’s like this & in this order: wrong side of the inner tote on top, following by right side of outer tote inside of that. sew all the way around the top. turn by using the gap you left on the inner tote. top stitch along the top & voila, you’re done! (you may want to top stitch the sides & bottom panels together, so you have a more solid structure-but that’s a personal preference thing!)

one of my favorite songs from childhood.  my parents used to make me & my 3 siblings super clean the house on saturday – a day we cleverly called “saturday cleaning.”   and honestly, the only thing that didn’t blow about saturday cleaning was that we listened to folksy late 60’s music (whilst scrubbing the toilet, but i digress) – and when this song would come on, we would all sing along.

pattern play: read my mind

some songs are epic & will be with you forever.  this probably isn’t one of those songs.  but it is perfect for a car trip.

and in case you might be interested – of all the patterns i have drawn at this point (over 57!) this one is still my favorite.  why you may ask?

a) i am a book nerd.  on such a level that i won’t even entertain the idea of using a kindle.  books must be held, their spines must be cracked, respect must be paid…i am fighting a losing battle.

b) design-wise, other than dream lover, is the most intricate pattern i have ever drawn. and trying to figure out where to make the repeat, so no fabric would be wasted during cutting…let’s just say, it was pretty mc escher-esque around my brain for weeks after the design was finished.  the dork in me loved it.
