I just saw your posted (May 6th) after a few people pointed me to your Tumblr post praising my work and I. Your words are really kind and made my day. All the thousands upon thousands of people who liked, reblogged, and added notes are part of this too. I wish I could name you all by name as well, but there’s so many of you all I can do is let you know I’ve seen the post and loved it.

Happy birthday, Samora Machel! (September 29, 1933)
The first President of Mozambique and a leader in the struggle for independence against Portugese colonial rule, Samora Machel was born to a farming family and witnessed from a young age the inequities of the colonial system as his father was forced to accept lower prices for his crops than those paid to white farmers and was compelled to grow cotton for export. Machel became politically active while working at a hospital, protesting against the disparity in wages between black and white nurses. He crossed the border into Tanzania to join FRELIMO, the Liberation Front of Mozambique, and engage in armed struggle against colonial rule. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a key leader in FRELIMO, becoming its president in 1970. Machel, like previous FRELIMO leader Eduardo Mondlane, identified politically as a Marxist-Leninist, and under his leadership FRELIMO developed from a broadly nationalist organization into a Marxist-Leninist movement. After the Carnation Revolution overthrew the Estado Novo in Portugal, the new Portugese government suggested a referendum on Mozambican independence, which Machel rejected, vowing no end to the war until Mozambique was free on its own terms. Machel and FRELIMO were ultimately victorious, and independence was achieved in 1975. Machel proclaimed the People's Republic of Mozambique, and his government moved quickly to build socialism in Mozambique, instituting land reform, nationalizing healthcare and education, abolishing landlordism, and stripping the Catholic Church of institutional privilege. Machel also continued the struggle against colonialism in Africa, supporting the Zimbabwean struggle, aiding the African National Congress, and fighting against internal rebels sponsored by Rhodesia and South Africa. He died in a plane crash in 1986, under circumstances that continue to raise suspicion.
“You don't ask a slave if he wants to be free, particularly when he is already in revolt, and much less if you happen to be a slave-owner.”

CDC finally fuckin' recommended the new COVID boosters for everyone in the US. letting my american followers who don't check the news know because i've been turned away for wanting to get an extra booster & now won't be anymore & it's Lovely. most americans are not going to get these and are going to grumble about them, which sucks as far as spread goes - but DOES mean u can schedule with ur local pharmacy sooner rather than later. please do so. ur immunocompromised friends and ur own body will thank u.
When I was little my entire thing was bugs and insects but sometime in my teens I pivoted and dead languages and ancient history became my entire thing so you might say I swapped entomology for etymology
Maybe it's the comparatively cold air around them, but there's something about soaking in a jacuzzi in the midst of winter that just makes troubles melt away as quickly as the snowflakes hitting the surface of the perfectly hot water. With a distinct lack of constricting swimwear, some drinks to warm their bellies, snowfall illuminated by colorful stringlights, and each other's company, they've got a recipe for a night they'll never forget!
Old YCh group piece done back in December 2019 ♥
omg if baby oil dissolves condoms what the fuck does it do to babies???
This may be shocking, but babies and condoms are made of different material
it’s like rock paper scissors: baby oil defeats condom, baby defeats baby oil, condom defeats baby
Hot take but praise is a good tool for encouraging healthy behavior. Positive reinforcement is good. Relying exclusively on punishment to change people's behavior is both cruel and ineffective. If someone does better than they did yesterday, let them know you appreciate it, let them know that they're improving!
"Don't praise anyone for doing the bare minimum" is a shitty take that prioritizes your sense of superiority over the actual betterment of people. I understand that things shouldn't be as bad as they are, and anger can often be justified, but you need to get over the propaganda that kindness is naïve, that cynicism and bitterness are intellectual. Withholding praise from those who haven't caught up with you doesnt actually help them, it doesn't motivate, it doesn't encourage, it only discourages them. It breeds bitterness and apathy, which are antithetical to empathy.
Growth isn't something you do on your own. People need support, they need community. Bootstraps won't get them there. Kindness will. Do you want results or do you just want to feel superior?
This. Everyone needs to see this. Everyone.
important reminder:
while (thankfully) trump doesn’t have the power to delay the election, the fact that he wants to should terrify every american to their core. there are two choices on the ballot this november: democracy and fascism. that’s it. that’s the choice. i don’t give a shit how you feel about biden. you have to vote for him anyway. vote blue down ballot. the constitution literally might not survive a second trump term.
if you don’t vote for biden, you are complicit in everything trump does going forward. a vote for a third party candidate is a vote for trump. a joke write-in is a vote for trump. staying home is a vote for trump. you have to vote for biden even if you don’t live in a swing state. we have to have a large enough margin of victory that it’s harder for trump to contest the results. you have to vote.
democracy or fascism. that’s the choice.

i know there’s a lot going on but ICE are now one step closer to literally creating gas chambers. they are spraying a chemical called HDQ neutral roughly 100 times a day, every 15 minutes at the adelanto detention center (one of the biggest in the country). people are getting rashes, headaches, their insides are bleeding, etc. the guards are wearing gloves and masks but the detainees have NOTHING. and here’s a quick reminder - america inspired the nazis to create gas chambers when they gassed latino people during the 1917 bath riots.
here’s a petition to sign. it’s close to it’s goal. if there’s anything else we can do to help i’ll update this post.
I don’t have the words to properly explain how horrifying this is. In April, the advocacy group Freedom For Immigrants published a report about unsanitary conditions at the detention center, where the immigrants were made to clean the facilities with only water, or shampoo. According to their report, there were sick detainees there - possibly with COVID-19, but it’s unclear since they weren’t being tested - and the conditions could easily lead to a situation in which the virus exploded among those there.
The guards are spraying this disinfectant in retaliation for the report. To be clear - HDQ is an industrial-strength disinfectant, which according to the manufacturer is “harmful if inhaled” and “causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage.” The guards are spraying it on everything every 15-30 minutes, according to sources, and immigrants in the center have already experienced severe symptoms including blisters, rashes, bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulties, headaches, stomach pain, and nausea.
And let’s be real - ICE doesn’t give a shit, either about protecting these people or about preventing a COVID outbreak. ICE, according to their own reports, currently has 25,911 people in custody, of which only 2,670 have been tested. 1,392 of those were positive. In simple terms - less than 10% of detainees have been tested. Of those, more than half are positive. We cannot estimate how many sick people ICE is currently holding, or how many more will get sick without any kind of prevention or care.
ICE is killing people through neglect, and when they dared complain - they started gassing them.
Unfortunately, with Trump in the white house, petitions aren’t doing much. What we can do, however, is donate to the advocacy group that is bringing these things to light, allowing them to continue their work and hopefully free more immigrants. Their donation page is here. Please spread this.
