As expected, after a few drinks, people were starting to brawl. Such a quiet town, anyone driving through might think, but everyone who lived here knew better. Grace kept her eyes on the fist fight breaking out and spoke to whoever happened to listen, "Class act, really."

after too much time spent inside with everyone else, savannah needed some much needed time to decompress for a moment. naturally an extreme introvert, she could only play pretend for so long until she felt the need to be in her own company. slipping away outside, the blonde found a comfortable wall to rest her back on as she reached for one of her cigarettes. a terrible habit, but perfect to calm her nerves.

nursing her cigarette for a few minutes, sav noticed a familiar face making their presence known. "if you're looking to bum one off of me, you have to say the magic words?" she joked with him.

the inside was stiffy, and there was nothing more than he hated than being in a room of people that had a stick so far up their ass. chance found himself outside, needing a break from all the glamour or the front of it. a chuckle left his lips when his eyes landed on her. of course she would be out here. nico leaned back in the passenger seat, mask pushed up just enough to rest against his forehead for now, fingers drumming idly against his thigh as he watched the entrance from afar. people filtered in and out in flashes of silk, velvet, and gold—faces hidden, identities blurred. it was the kind of scene that thrived on illusion, on people pretending to be something—or someone—they weren’t. his gaze lingered for a moment longer before he finally shifted, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small vial, rolling it between his fingers like it was second nature. he had a weird feeling in the pit of his stomach that he couldn't quite put his finger on.

nico glanced over at chance then, a faint smile tugging at his lips as he held up the powder between them. “thanks for being my date to this thing,” he said, easy but a little quieter than usual, faintly holding that playful edge he usually carried. his eyes flicking over chance’s face, “it’s just good to know you’ll be around. i hope that’s not a weird thing to say.” he lets the moment lingered for half a second before he huffed a soft breath, shoulders loosening as slipped himself back into the familiar carefree mindset he was usually in. “anyway,” nico added, offering the vial out toward chance with a small tilt of his head, “start us off, babes.”

chance kept one hand on the wheel, gaze drifting over the steady stream of people making their way inside. it was almost admirable that out of all the times the santoros hosted a party, the town still pretended that they were actually entertaining to attend, as if it was something worth showing up for. he gave up the smoke and mirrors years ago.

he didn't take the vial right away. instead, his eyes lingered on nico for a second longer than necessary as something quieter settled in his expression. " not weird at all, " his voice steady when the words left his lips. no teasing, just honesty. " i get it. " only then he reached for it, fingers lingering for a half a beat more as he took the vial from the other's grasp. he turned it once between his fingers before tipping a bit of the powder in the space between his thumb and pointer finger. " hope this is the good stuff, " he added, a smirk returning as he lifted his hand. the inhale was sharp, and his head immediately tipped back against the seat as his eyes rolled back for a split second before settling again. the tension he had been holding in melted away as a lazy grin spread across his face as he met nico's gaze once more. " how much you paying for this? " his eyebrows knotted together a bit as he poured more onto his hand, this time holding it up for the other to take his turn.

"i'm sticking with you tonight," he said, as though that hadn't been a given, anyway. yujin never really knew what to do with other people's sadness, other than offer himself up to fit in whatever mold someone else could carve out for him. it was never particularly useful and he had not much more to give beyond that. however, there was still the other reason why he wanted to voice so clearly that he wasn't straying from serra's side now -- with another person turning up dead, he was worried about what could happen if he didn't have eyes on his friend. "so do you want another drink or not?"

the day of the masquerade ball started like any other—blasting music, screaming along to every lyric, steam from the hottest shower fogging the mirror, then air drying in front of the tv as a random channel played in the background, fingers absentmindedly dragging across her phone. it was all noise. but somewhere between the static and half-heard dialogue, something caught her attention. a name. daisy reynolds.

serra didn't react the way most people would. tears didn't form, anger didn't brew. she just stilled. the tv kept talking, her phone dimmed in her hands, and time stretched for what felt like hours. yet, still nothing. and why would there be? daisy was just a random girl she had known for three months. just a random girl that she left behind like it was nothing, like she always did. no goodbye, no promise. just gone. them crossing paths again was a coincidence, one that felt so natural as if they had known each other for all their lives. serra turned the thought over in her mind without letting herself hold it for too long. she finally came to her conclusion, the only one that was possible for someone like her. she didn't care.

her gaze then landed on yujin, expression flattening into something unreadable. " i don't need a babysitter, " her voice edged enough to make it clear that she meant every word. serra resisted the urge to roll her eyes. she knew how to take care herself. been doing it since she was kid, and she wasn't about to let someone waste their night hovering over her like she would break. as if she was burden. " besides— " her fingers hooked under the hem of her hoodie, lifting just enough to reach underneath to grab the bottle of vodka she had tucked away in the sports bra she was wearing. once she pulled it out, she shook the glass as a grin spread across her face. “okay, maybe i needed this more than i will admit,” savannah let out a giggle as she took a long hit of the joint she was sharing with chance. after an interesting exchange of texts, she found herself coming over there for a smoking slash hangout session. how the rest of their night would unravel towards was a mystery to her. the last few days had been a bit of an emotional whirlwind, so a distraction was probably a good thing at the moment.

" he brought the joint to his lips, taking a long drag. the only thing he hated was that there was no information. nothing to go off of, nothing to get hit back. he rolled his eyes before taking another drag, passing it back over to savannah so that she could take another hit. his gaze followed her upwards as she stood; he watched, chin tilted up, head leaning back, something close to delight clearly etched into his features as he watched her throw a jab. this where he liked to be. this was his home. just him, his car, and miles of road ahead of him. it reminded him of his nights back in miami. though the city lights added a flare that couldn’t be replicated. one hand was on the stirring wheel as the other brought a cigarette to his lips, blowing the smoke out of the window. home. it was a scary thought. who was chance without his car, without dade county police trying to chase him down before ultimately giving up. out the corner of his eye, he watched as nico stuck his body out the window. a reminder that he wasn’t alone this night, and he never minded the company of the other.

chance shook his head as he took another drag of the cig. " if you wanted to run off with me, " tossing the cigarette out the window, he shifted gears before pressing the pedal as close to the floor as he could get it. the car had nothing on his bugatti back in miami that was hiding in wait for him, but it was quick enough. still gave him that rush he craved ever since he got behind the wheel at sixteen. two hands were on the wheel this time as his eyes locked onto the road before him. " all you had to do was ask. " he glanced over at nico with a sly smirk on his lips.
