Assignment 2 U Grades

Hi Folks:

For those of who earned a U on the second assignment, I will allow until the end of the week for you to resubmit your paper (whether we discussed Part 1 or Part 2 needing to be revised). After this point, the assignment will be assigned a failing grade.

I know that the calendar lists some PDF readings that I have not yet posted. It’s been a busy week and I didn’t get around to posting them--and as I wouldn’t want to give you only one night to engage with the readings, I’ve decided not to require you to read these. I may talk about them, reading from some passages in class. But you don’t have to worry about doing any reading for tomorrow.

Reading for Thursday

For those of you who have a conference with me scheduled for Tuesday, I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your papers, upcoming summary assignment, and anything else you may have questions about or would like to discuss further. I've gotten all of the essays (for students who have conferences with me) graded and have uploaded grades and comments; I encourage you to peruse those before our meeting.

If you have not received a grade in the grade book for the last assignment, you most likely have a U, in which case we will discuss your paper and how you can get that paper revised in order to receive a grade. If for some reason you don't have a conference scheduled with me, I encourage you to email me and we'll get you squared away and I'll get you a grade. At this point, I have graded in order of conference schedule and will continue grading any errant papers/papers whose authors haven't scheduled a conference with me (the latter which will take longer as other obligations are pressing--but if you have not scheduled a conference with me and for this reason have not received a grade, I highly recommend emailing me and I will make grading your paper and getting feedback to you a priority).

As for Thursday, we will be talking a little bit about discourse community. I've attached (below) a reading by John Swales, which gives a pretty comprehensive definition of the term. While I recommend taking a look at this and familiarizing yourself with Swales's terminology--especially since any who plan to take ENG 180 (which I assume is just about all of you) will probably encounter this text (and if not your instructor will certainly hint at the text for it's a seminal piece in writing studies, specifically so to Western's Writing-About-Writing (WAW) approach to teaching writing)--we will be discussing the terms more broadly in class and experimenting with them.

Comment on grades

Hi all:

As I told a few of you (sorry if I forgot to mention it to all of you), it says on our syllabus that you can revise one essay for a higher grade. As I’ve been revising my syllabus for ENG 180, which I am teaching next semester, I’ve decided to make a new rule: You can revise any paper you like for a higher grade--but you can only receive one grade increase for your revision for each paper you choose to revise. Does that make sense? U papers have to revise, otherwise they bottom out at an F. But I am extending the option to revise to everyone as well.

Writing Process--It’s never as simple as writing the paper

Hi all:

If you’ll recall our discussion of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., and his unique process of writing Slaughterhouse-Five--a unique process fitting with an even more unique novel. Well, just to reiterate how important it is to acknowledge writing is a process--if you’ll recall my sharing with you my lack of writing process for my first summary assignment in my grad class this summer (and how miserably that turned out)--I thought I’d share with you the outline for my upcoming conference paper:

I am not just barreling through the writing process on this one. No, sir. I learned that the hard way. In addition to keeping this outline next to me while I gather my evidence, integrate, and write, I’m meeting with one of my colleagues this weekend, who is writing a similar paper (only arguing an opposite point regarding these two works). Meeting with an opposition will help me consider both sides and will hopefully make my argument stronger and more thorough; consider doing this for your own papers in the future.

Anyway, I hope you all have a great weekend--be working on your own outlines/summaries.

Reminder: Visual Narrative Assignment due tomorrow.

Class:

Just a friendly reminder that your visual narrative collage is due tomorrow. Remember, both your written narrative and your visual narrative are due tomorrow. If you were able to complete a visual narrative on the computer and are able to submit this, along with your written narrative, to the dropbox on WO, that is fine. Otherwise, in the case of other visual media that can’t be submitted to a dropbox (for instance, a poster board), then be sure to post your written narrative to the dropbox and bring your visual in to submit to me.

Tuesday Peer Review; Thursday Readings Up (Change in syllabus)

Hi all:

Hope you’re all ready for our collaborative peer review this Tuesday! Remember to bring whatever you need to facilitate your peer’s viewing of your project.

Thursday we will be talking about the upcoming summary and discussion lead assignment. Marshall McLuhan’s seminal “The Medium is the Message” has been uploaded, and I’ve also uploaded a summary I completed on it, which was unsuccessful for a number of reasons. I have also included another reading, Sergei Eisenstein’s “A Dialectic Approach to Film Form,” as well as my summary of it (which can serve as an example of a more successful summary). My hopes are that you can observe both successful and unsuccessful summaries, and learn from my mistakes as well as my successes. Don’t be overwhelmed by the critical readings; skim those. Pay more attention to what’s going on in the summaries I’ve uploaded and we’ll talk about them Thursday.

Paper 1 Grades Up

Hi All:

I really enjoyed reading your revisions of Paper 1! Overall, I was very impressed with them. Grades are up now. My comments are on Turnitin. If for some reason you can’t access my comments, I will be going over how to find these on Turnitin on Tuesday. A quick comment on grades: Generally, papers are graded on either a 10-point or 25-point scale. The grade breakdowns are as follows:

10-point scale A: 10-9

B: 8

C: 7

25-point scale

A: 25-23

B: 21

C: 18

A U grade is assigned if the paper has some major concerns that need to be adjusted before the paper can earn a grade. So if you turned in your paper to DropBox and don’t have a grade in the computer, this means you likely earned a U (and my comments to this effect can be found on Turnitin). If you received a U, you should meet with me so we can get you on track.

I’m missing about 6 of your papers, which have not been submitted to WO. Make sure to submit to the DropBox for paper 1 if you have not already done so; at this point the paper will be late and take a late penalty, but a late paper is better than a zero.

Description of Character Due Tuesday!

Just a friendly reminder that your revised description of character essays are due to DropBox by Tuesday. I enjoyed meeting with you all in conferences and getting to know each of you a little better. Reminder: we’re starting our next unit Tuesday, so come prepared to talk about technology and its impact on writing process!

Show, don’t tell!

As you guys are working on the revisions of your description of character essays moving into next week, I’ll ask you to remember our discussion about narrative techniques, particularly how “showing” is much more effective in engaging a reader than simply “telling.” If you are familiar with NBC’s The Office, in the following clip we see how “telling” makes an otherwise interesting story fall flat. Ryan asks if the gang would like to hear about Thailand. Who wouldn’t? He responds simply, “It was indescribable.” Funny enough, playing into Ryan’s undeserved aloofness (at this point, he’s gone from from being the youngest VP of Dunder Mifflin to a bowling alley attendant), doesn’t his response seem like a copout, an easy way to avoid the perhaps taxing alternative of describing his experiences in authentic and understandable terms?

Homework, due for Tuesday

Hi folks:

Sorry if there was any confusion. I’ve been feeling under the weather, so I’ve been struggling.

Reminders: For next week, we WON’T be meeting for our usual class period; that is, we will not be meeting for traditional class from 11-12:15 on Tuesday and Thursday. Instead, we will be meeting on an individual basis for conferences. Absence from a conference counts as an absence in the class, so make sure to show up!

Homework (Due next Tuesday before 11:00AM). This may sound a bit weird, but, as we won’t be meeting for regular our class regular period, I’d like for you guys to submit to Tumblr prior to when we’d regularly meet.

Here’s what I want you to do: Long Beach Community College has a collection of handouts on sentence revision (to name a few, verb tense, point of view, avoiding second person, “You,” and so forth). I’d like you to pick one of the PDFs they have up, something you think you struggle with. For instance, maybe you think you’ve had trouble in the past (or have been told so) that you have a tendency of shifting tenses. Looking at the PDF they have on tenses would be a good idea. I want to to pick out one of those PDF handouts, read up on the issue, and then try to complete the practice section on the second page of the handout. Then, I’d like you to tell us about it in a Tumblr post. What was your experience? Do you feel completing the practice helped you get a better idea of how to avoid these issues in the future?
