So much chaos in this chapter and I was loving every bit 🤣

I'll admit I was a tad disappointed at first when the director appeared at the door instead of Yor, but I had a feeling she'd show up later. We haven't seen a whole lot of this guy until now, so it's nice to know more of his personality...as unhinged as it is 😅 His switch between "goofy pizza guy" and "do what I say or blood will spill" is certainly something...

Twilight with a pizza slice hanging from his mouth was not something I was expecting to see ever, but it made me crack up! He looks so undignified 😆

The below panel is actually pretty good character development for Twilight. We've seen time and time again how surprised he is whenever Yor does something "unusual." This is the first time he flat-out states that he knows she tends to not do or react to things in a normal way (but he loves her anyway~)

Speaking of Yor, her "pleased/appeased to meet you" thing is an accurate translation of the Japanese version, which is はじめまして(hajimemashite) meaning "nice to meet you, how do you do, etc" vs Anya's bastardized version はじまめして("hajimameshite") 😅

Also gotta give her kudos for not immediately smacking Twilight at this sudden physical contact, something she would have done in the past. She's trying so hard~ Too bad she had such terrible timing 😂

But my gosh, this has to be a new record for the amount of plan flip-flopping and overthinking Twilight has done within one chapter. I'm exhausted just summarizing all this thoughts:

"Make contact with the director or not? No, Yor is here, focus on Captain Curtis. Does Yor remember Captain Curtis or not? Gotta keep her physically separated from him. No, I need to come up with a pretext to leave the party. Can't make up medical excuses in front of Yuri. But Yor wants to stay? Ok, we traumatize Yuri so we can drive him away. It's not working, and Yor got drunk? That could work but no, would be too risky. Get her close to me so I can use the tranquilizer watch. She won't come over, ok I have to use the watch's firing mode..."

The poor guy is definitely gonna have a headache later. But despite being in this "mad hatter's tea party" scenario, Twilight is still concerned about Anya amidst his jumbled thoughts, which I thought was another nice moment of character development for him ❤️ (and yes, the Japanese version is the same).

This chapter leaves me with two lingering questions: first is whether Yor really doesn't remember Captain Curtis, or if she's just pretending not to (out of fear?) Jules on Twitter always comes up with good theories, and I think this one would be an emotional twist 👀

It's hard to say at this point if she really does remember him or not, since Yor can be forgetful sometimes but she's also very sharp in most situations. I'd imagine being interrogated by the SSS is something you wouldn't forget about...

The other lingering question is whether the tranquilizer would work on Yor or not. We already know she's very resistant to poison, and although it's not exactly the same thing, it would make sense for an assassin to build up resistance to tranquilizing substances as well 🤔Or Twilight might just miss the shot and we'll never know, lol.

Anyway, every time I think this arc is ending it just keeps going, so I won't even speculate whether the next chapter will be the conclusion or not 😅Looking forward to it!

Now I feel silly for thinking yet again that the TV station hijacking arc would wrap up because it just keeps getting spicier 👀 Yuri shenanigans and the interrogation was amusing, but I was not expecting this panel to drop...

It might be tempting to write this off as him putting on a facade yet again in front of everyone at the party, as would be expected from Twilight. But the SSS officer's comment that there's "not a single hint of deception in his eyes" is the clincher. I can say with 99% certainty that Endo wants us to believe that this guy is a seasoned officer who can tell when someone's lying or not, and if he's telling us that Twilight is being truthful here, we're supposed to believe him. From a narrative perspective, there would be no other reason to emphasize the scene like this.

For those of us who pay attention to Twilight's expressions throughout the series, we know that he has his "Twilight eyes," which are when his eyes narrow and his face darkens (this is different from his default Twilight expression he has when he's doing his usual spy work without emotion). He has this particular expression typically when he's trying to suppress his emotions he doesn't want to show, and so ends up overcompensating with a very serious face. Example below:

Then there's his "Loid Forger" face, which is when he's being ingenuine behind a facade, which is signaled by him having a phony and exaggeratedly cheerful expression. Example below:

There's also been some "in between" moments where he's trying to keep the Loid Forger mask, but his true feelings slip out. This usually happens when he's interacting with Yor or Anya in some emotional situation. Example below:

But his expression in this chapter is one we don't see often, if at all - an expression that's definitely not "Twilight," but it's not phony like "Loid Forger" either, nor is it "restricted" in any way like the aforementioned "in between" moments. I believe this expression is, plain and simply, [redacted]...his true self, with no filters at all.

For those curious, his dialogue in the Japanese version is the same. He doesn't use the word for "love" that Fiona uses, "suki" (好き) but uses "aisthiteru" (愛してる) instead, which is for romantic love specifically. This is the word that the officer used when he asked the question though, so makes sense he would use the same word.

Another reason I think he's being totally genuine here is because of what happened a couple chapters ago where he was forced to confront his feelings about why he almost sacrificed himself for Yor. Instead of doubling down on pushing those feelings aside and making his usual "for the mission" excuses, he is, for once in who knows how long, being totally honest with himself (it just happens to benefit his mission at this moment too, lol). There's also a noticeable lack of background in this panel, which Endo loves to use when he wants to show a character being true and genuine.

We learn Twilight's age in the chapter as well, but I'd take it with a grain of salt since he could very well be lying about it. It could just be an age he established as part of his whole "Loid Forger" persona and not his true age (though probably close).

But besides some big character development from Twilight, another major event in this chapter was the name reveal of Yuri's boss in the SSS, the previously unnamed officer with the scar who we now know is Captain Curtis (no last name for Chloe though, sorry girl 😅)

There's been a long-standing theory that this guy was Twilight's father. I don't know if the theory was taken all that seriously, and I never believed it myself, but I think this chapter pretty much snuffs it out.

It was a little disappointing to see Yuri go back to rejecting Loid right after everything that happened. So Loid has him beat in the character development department in this arc, at least for now 😅

While Twilight meeting Chloe, Curtis, and the other officers was fun, I can't wait to see if Yor shows up next chapter 👀 I've been wanting her to meet Chloe for a while! Of course there's the chance that's not her at the door, or Twilight will come up with some plan to get her away from the party. Either way, I'm glad this arc is still not letting up 😃

Spy x Family 2026 Calendar

As usual, I bought the new SxF anime calendar for the upcoming year! Since these are always A2 size, they don't fit into my scanner without the images being cropped. I'll scan them anyway if the cropping isn't too bad, but unfortunately the illustrations in this particular calendar made scanning too difficult. So I opted to just take photos with my phone and clean them up as best I could (adjusted the lighting, contrast, and sharpness). Enjoy!

Spy x Family miscellaneous collab scans - part 3

Been a while since I made one of these posts! First up of the new scannable items I got is the adorable season 2 blu-ray box, featuring the Forgers at the resort island!

Speaking of the blu-ray box, if you preordered it from Amazon, you get the below cloth poster featuring Loid & Anya from the cruise arc! I didn't actually buy all the blu-rays, but I did buy the box second-hand, and the cloth poster was included. I didn't think it would scan well since it's cloth, but it ended up looking pretty good! (minus the crease on the left)

Next is artwork I've been looking all over for, after only seeing a low quality version online a while back. I couldn't find any merch with these designs, but @xxscarletxrosexx found a clear file with it and was kind enough to let me post the scan she made 😀 She has a lot of SxF merch available on her Ko-Fi shop here so give it a look see~

Next is a series of photo cards featuring all the SxF characters in gorgeous outfits/poses!

Next is the little activity book from the McDonald's collab from a while back.

And lastly, I was able to scan the below acrylic boards. Most acrylics don't scan well and end up blurry no matter what I do, but these ones came out great!

Thoughts on Spy x Family: Family Portrait

I finally got around to reading the SxF light novel, Family Portrait...and I mean "finally" because it's literally been sitting in my shelf since it was first released in English back in December of last year! I was distracted by Code White and the SxF video game which came out around the same time, but even long after that, I was having trouble getting motivated to read it. For some reason, experiencing SxF in novel format instead of in anime/manga just didn't appeal to me, plus the fact that it's not written by Endo himself (these weird preferences of mine are also why I'm not into reading fanfics either). Don't get me wrong, in general I love reading stories in prose form too, but for a series like SxF that already has such an established visual identity, it doesn't feel as "authentic" to me if that makes any sense. But I did want to read it eventually, since it is an official part of SxF media and Endo did the illustrations and does acknowledge the book (he wrote a nice afterword at the end). So I finally sat down and read it in sections over the course of this week! I'll share my brief thoughts on each of the contained stories:

Novel Mission 1

Since this was the first story in the book, it took me a while to get used to experiencing the world of SxF in novel form. There were some things I felt would have been better conveyed in anime/manga, for example, one of the very first gags about Yor misinterpreting Anya's nature class as some sort of hardcore outdoor survival trip. As I was reading that part I was like "I get the joke, but it would have been funnier if I actually saw these images and the characters' expressions with Endo's comedic illustrations." It was also a bit jarring to hear the characters thoughts and feelings from third-person narration, but I got used to it. As for the story itself, it was Damianya focused, something I'm not particularly into, but I don't mind it either. I liked the rare, soft Damian moments, and the thing with the squirrel eating Anya's peanut trail was funny. I also liked the scene at the beginning where Loid and Yor feed Bond together while Anya watches.

Novel Mission 2

Oddly, this was my favorite of the stories! Of all the characters, I think the author nailed Yuri's unhinged thoughts the best - as I was reading, I couldn't help but hear every cringe thought in his voice, which is a good sign of how well the author gets the character! I actually chuckled at a few parts too, both from his insane Yor-obsessed and anti-Loid musings, as well as from his banter with Anya. The police interrogation scene was great and would be even better if it ever gets animated! I also found it interesting that this story has the first instance where we find out what Yuri thinks about Bond (that he's fat and useless - rude!) Also his first time hearing about Franky apparently...makes we wonder if Endo will make him feel the same way if these things ever come up in the manga.

Novel Mission 3

I liked this story a lot too! I think it worked the best in novel format out of all of them, probably because it was more focused on drama and emotions than comedy. It's ironic that the two official SxF stories that feature the deeper side of Franky's character - this one and the omake chapter from volume 13 - are both not even part of the main canon! Alessa would have definitely accepted Franky's job as an informant, but he felt that someone like her should only be surrounded by "beautiful things." The poor man really needs to see that inner beauty matters too, and he has that! I also think he should have swallowed his pride and told Loid the real reason why he wanted the disguise...not that it would have changed the outcome. Poor Franky.

Novel Mission 4

This was a cute Forger-focused story, but like the first one, I felt it had parts that would have been more effective in anime/manga form, for example, "hair monster" Yor and whatever hideous painting Felix ended up making! But despite that, it was still funny and cute. Though I do think the author went a tad overboard with Yor's flustered antics...they just kept going and going, lol. Also, like the movie, we have another scenario of Loid getting flung into the air by Yor but landing gracefully on his feet (though this instance was much tamer since she wasn't drunk and only pushed him instead of hit him). Again, maybe I would have appreciated the humor in this story better if I saw it in anime/manga with Endo's hilarious designs and expressions, but for what it was, it was enjoyable enough.

Short Novel

This extra short story would be perfect as a reintroduction story for a future anime season...maybe one day!

Overall, the Family Portrait novel is a nice addition to the Spy x Family universe. Even though I feel the humor in the series is most effective in illustrated form, it's still nice to have more stories in the canon, especially ones that show new sides to the characters, like the Franky and Yuri stories. Like the movie, it's debatable if this novel should be considered true canon or not, but personally, I don't find anything in it that contradicts canon, at least not yet. So yeah, definitely check out the novel if you haven't already! 😁

Spy x Family workbook scans - part 1

The Spy x Family workbooks are a series of Japanese books for helping children learn. There are three total as of now: one for English, one for programming, and one for drawing. I wanted to get the books not just because they're good Japanese practice, but because they feature original illustrations of Anya and the other SxF characters in adorable chibi style ❤️ I'll be sharing some scans from each book, starting with the English one.

First off are the character bios. I find it hilarious that the book mentions Yor's job as an assassin...not a word I'd expect to find in a children's book 😅

The book goes through the different letters of the English alphabet along with sample words featuring the SxF characters, like "B" for "Bond" and "A" for "Anya." I didn't scan all 26 letters, but here are some of my favorites!

Both Loid and Damian are having such lavish meals, lol. Also Henderson gets "E" for "elegant" of course.

I love how Bond looks so worried about Yor's cooking 😂

My two favorites of these, "Father" and "Mother" of course~

And two of the weirdest ones, Yuri and a giant gorilla for "G" and Franky fishing an octopus for "O." Kinda random, lol.

Next are some activity pages, like a maze and common phrase practice.

I gotta say that despite this book being aimed at young children who probably aren't hardcore SxF fans, it tries to feature even obscure characters like the Forgers' neighbors, the lady from the tailor shop, and Martha. Kudos to the book authors for trying to be as faithful to the SxF universe as possible!

The book even adapts a couple of already established illustrations, like the below one that's similar to the Boss Coffee collab.

Also this one that's similar to the extra Endo illustration for chapter 36!
