SHMI SKYWALKER

THE PAST

Born on a ship while traveling the galaxy, Shmi loved her parents and seeing new sights, meeting new people, bringing smiles to those around her. That was until her and her parents were captured by pirates and forced into slavery when she was just a young girl. She lived a difficult life as a slave, and was taken from star system to star system in the servitude of several masters. Eventually she was bought by the Hutts who brought her to Tatooine. It wasn’t too long after than Shmi had her son, Anakin, who was raised as a slave with her.

At one point, Shmi and Anakin were owned by the female Hutt crime lord Gardulla until she lost them in a bet with the Toydarian junk dealer Watto, who employed Anakin's services at his shop. While Watto could be a harsh and demanding master, he still furnished them with a home in Mos Espa's slave quarters. Despite their poverty, she made Anakin and herself a good home through her tireless effort. When Watto did not need Shmi, he allowed her to gain a modest living cleaning computer memory devices. She made a small part of their house into a work station, which possessed just enough of the tools and equipment to properly work.

A few years before the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Watto's gambling habit left him to be essentially destitute, forcing the Toydarian to sell Shmi. Luckily for her, a moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars met and fell in love with her. Lars purchased but freed her, and the two eventually married. She also became a loving step-mother to his son, Owen Lars. C-3PO also lived with them, and Shmi had a quiet yet happy life at the Lars moisture farm in Tatooine's Jundland Wastes. However, she spent many nights with an ache in her heart and looking at the stars, as she was worried about where Anakin was and his well-being.

THE PRESENT

Waking with a freedom she had never had, Shmi spends her time as she had in the past, cleaning devices for a modest living. At least, as modest as she could tell. Knowing her son is still out there, Shmi desperately wants to see him again, to tell him she’s proud of him, but for now she must make do.

PERSONALITY

Shmi Skywalker Lars was a peaceful, selfless and kind person. She loved her son Anakin and was willing to sacrifice herself in order to let Anakin have the possibility of a better life. During her time under Watto, Shmi still had hope that she would eventually be free, but she accepted her lot in life and had joy in her relationship with Anakin, cherishing their modest life.

She is a FORTY-EIGHT year old CIS WOMAN HUMAN. they’re originally from TATOOINE and now show loyalty to the UNALIGNED. they are best known for being a MOISTURE FARMER, and i hear they’re pretty RESILIENT yet also SELF-SACRIFICING at times; i hope they survive the galactic civil war. During the turbulent times Shmi lost contact with her son once again. Still unaware of his role in things she holds out hope that he is doing his best and is living a life he enjoys and hopes that she will see him once again.

She has stayed on Coruscant for the most part, still woking on repairs for those who need them to keep herself busy and have credits coming in while being able to forget about her life on Tatooine. 

Knowing she has more family she has also every so often looked to finding and connecting with them.

the corners of her lips remained turned upward and padmé was exceptionally careful with maintaining her expression, making sure that there was nothing that the other could read into. she would not be the one who would give away what happened to her son, would not be the one to tell her of his fate. “politics often isn’t popular profession. i would not choose any other pathway for myself. it is what it is,” she offered with an easy shrug of her shoulders and folded her hands behind her back. “are you adjusting to life on coruscant well? it’s quite the change of pace from tatooine.”

Padme wasn’t reading into her expression either way, occupied with how peaceful this was and how it reassured her that the force was finally favoring her. “You began in politics at such a young age, most people would think you’re either bold or brash to remain in it.” She looked at her before looking around again “It’s so wonderful.” There was an excitement, happiness to her voice “I’ve never imagined so many people in one place, living as peacefully as it is. It’s a very nice change of pace from my old home.”

“The day Ani left to join the jedi... I was so proud of him and happy for him but seeing him leave.. How could it not break my heart?”

Those long, long years ago Shmi could never have imagined herself living such a pleasant life, away from the cruel and harsh reality of slavery on Tatooine that she had grown up in, but now with the freedom she had and the proud knowledge that her son had grown up to become a jedi and help the galaxy while escaping the life she never thought she would be able to.... How could she not feel a joy and lightness that she never even dreamed of feeling? 

Her job was going well and the woman was reflecting on on everything, she had decided to treat herself to lunch in the market and order from her favorite stand. Feeling a burst of happy generosity Shmi looked to the person next to her who had ordered after her and smiled “Here, allow me.” She slipped her credits to the vendor to pay for their food as well, hoping to give the person she was paying for a nice day or at the least a nice treat.

shmi had such a pretty smile and padmé did not want to wipe the expression off of her face with the truth. the galaxy knew about darth vader, but it did not know who the man beneath the mask was. that information was difficult to come by, whispers in the rebellion and little more. a part of her hoped that she would never have to find out the truth, or at the very least, not until it was a problem of the past. but anakin was still so very lost.

“yes, it was quite the lovely surprise, despite the circumstances,” she offered with a soft smile. there were details better not to go into, but the summary would do no harm. “on coruscant. he and obi-wan were both tasked with stopping an attempt on my life. he grew up to become quite the jedi.”

Hearing of the reunion of her son and this woman made her smile grow, the pride and admiration in her eyes for her son shine brighter upon hearing what had happened. He had made it. He had found a good life away from the harsh reality he was born into and that was all she had ever wanted for her son. “I’m so happy he was able to help you. You’re such a wonderful woman yourself, I’m glad you were kept safe.” Her words were genuine, tone sincere. She had always liked Padme and it made her so happy that he was able to help her. “I’m sorry that there were circumstances that put you in such danger though.”

Satine  lingers  in  the  door  for  a  moment  longer  than  strictly  necessary,  smiling  at  the  woman.  “  I  am  sorry  for  the  intrusion,  “  she  begins,  “  I  am  afraid  my  droid  has  gotten  quite  filthy.  Its  circuits  are  malfunctioning.  “  she  frowns  down,  patting  her  astromech  once  on  the  head.  “  I’ve  heard  this  is  a  safe  place  for  me  to  get  it  cleaned  up.  “  Safe  wasn’t  the  word  she  should  have  used.  That  would  imply  she  was  hiding  from  something,  which  she  was.  She  didn’t  need  everyone  to  know  that  however.

Shmi was humming to herself as she worked on cleaning some spare parts she had been paid to fix- it was light work she enjoyed doing and gave her a chance to meet people she otherwise wouldn’t, not to mention gave her the ability to retain her own freedom. This could be argued it was a life she’d always dreamed of having on Tatooine and it was honestly so nice.

Hearing someone at her door she looked over, smiling and standing at the woman “Of course, please, come in.” She set down what she was working on and took off her gloves “Please, can I get you any tea or anything?”

shmi seemed to process the information fairly well and for that she was grateful, her hands clasping behind her back in a regal posture now that they were inside of the greenhouse, not wanting to restrict the other woman any. padmé knew that she had been a good queen, served her people well enough that they wanted her to stay on well past her term limit. but she had done good work in the senate, too. it had opened her eyes in ways that staying on naboo would have never done.

“thank you, shmi,” she said with a sincere nod of her head. “i was… quite lucky, actually. anakin and i met again when we were both adults.” she was skeptical to say any more about their relationship, or about him in general, but she did not feel as though she could lie to her about everything.

Pulling her hand away from her arm she watched Padme as she clasped her hands behind her back, Shmi watched her as much as she was tempted to admire the beautiful greenery around them. In the back of her mind she thought about how she would love to be able to care for some of these beautiful plants one day but it was difficult as she never had been able to get any experience in anything of the sort.

“You did?” Shmi’s smile grew, mind then on how happy that would have made her Ani, she had always known how much he’d admired her and hoped they would see one another once more. “Oh that must have made Ani happy, and hopefully you too. Sometimes reunions are so wonderful. Where did you two see one another again?”

Are there any traditions in your family?

Shmi had to think. Traditions weren’t really a thing you can make with family when you’re in slavery, not to mention being separated from her family through that. But with Anakin.. “I don’t know if it counts, but every year I used some of the little money I had saved up to buy Anakin some sweets on his birthday and he would always give one to me. Well, up until when he left for the jedi. I still bought some every year after, just in case he came home to visit.”

“Well, I’m, not sure what I would be convincing you anyways, but  either way I’m sure that there’s something we can talk about. It’s always good to hear other people’s side.”

“We can always hope that the force is with us.” Shmi responded with a nod, clasping her hands. Sometimes it was hard to believe the force was with her but  it had certainly blessed her with her son, eventually her husband and new family and freedom.

Do you have a strained relationship with any of your family members? If so, why?

There was almost a sad look in Shmi’s eyes as she reflected on her life “Unfortunately I don’t have that much family that I know of, so there isn’t much to be strained.”

rey hesitated. she didn’t know much about the man, but she knew enough about what he had become. she had glimpsed into what ben had admired about the man. she knew he was hardly… good. but that wasn’t something she wanted to explain to his mother. it was hardly her place. “i’ve…heard of him. i’ve never met him, though, i believe i know his children.”

Shmi watched the other woman, extremely curious as to what she knew about her son. Was he as ambitious and spirited as he had been as a child? She could only hope he had lived the life she had dreamed he would get, but she didn’t know for sure. Listening intently as the other woman spoke, she was thrown off by her last word “Children?”

“yes, much has changed.” padmé walked shmi to a small, public greenhouse down the road. indoors and quiet, unlikely to be monitored by either side. a rodian woman was at the front, but beyond that, it was empty. there was nothing secret to most of the universe about what she had to say, but she thought it was best if they had a degree of privacy.

“i had told all of you that i was a handmaiden to the queen,” she begun. “that was a lie. i am – was queen amidala. i served two terms for my people before i began to serve in the galactic senate.” there was so much more that she could say, of her relationship with anakin, of shmi’s grandchildren, but she had no wish to overwhelm shmi nor break her heart.

Shmi had heard about this greenhouse, always wanting to go but seeming to always find excuses not to. It was nice to have a reason to, and with someone she liked, all the better. Normally Shmi would insist on going somewhere crowded when learning something new and important- crowded places had a degree of privacy that places like this didn’t, but surely there wasn’t any information that could hurt anyone that she would learn here and now. 

Watching the younger woman, her eyes widened upon hearing the news of whom padme truly was “A queen?” She was a bit shocked, mostly at  herself that she didn’t realize she was in the presence of royalty, but how would she ever know that? “That’s amazing, Padme. I’m sure you were wonderful.” The older woman squeezed Padme’s arm a bit.

rey blinked some at her response– anakin.. certainly was a name she knew. skywalker– she was his mother. with a pause she shook her head, “No don’t… you don’t need to apologize… anakin, anakin skywalker? he’s your son?” she asked, her thoughts directed to the lightsaber tucked away in her bag– it was her sons. 

A bit surprised by the look on the younger woman’s face at her words, she watched her for a second, not sure what was happening. But there was... recognition of her son’s name. Was her Ani a famous jedi? He was certainly ambitious enough, and he deserved it after the life he had been born into “I- Yes, He’s my son. Do you know him?”

“i am always happy to make time for old friends, shmi.” there were so many things that she wanted to tell her –– the plans that padmé had made after her rule had ended, the fact that she had sent sabé to try and find her but she had been too late. but the information is self-indulgent. it didn’t change what had actually happened to her.

padmé offered her arm for shmi to take. “come with me,” she murmured. “it would be good for us to get on the same page. it seems like it’s been a hundred years since we last met.” but there was truth now that was safe to tell her, even if felt like other things weren’t. things related to anakin, the fact that shmi was her mother-in-law, technically. “when we first met, i wasn’t completely honest with you.”

Though she still felt a little bad for taking up the younger woman’s time, Shmi was eager to catch up on what had all happened. She knew ther had to be so many stories Padme could tell and there was so much that she had missed out on. Taking eager steps, Shmi walked with her to whever Padme was leading them.

“It’s certainly felt like a hundred years, so much has changed and I know I don’t even know a part of it. Things certainly are much different than they were on Tatooine.” She nodded, looking forward until Padme spoke again “Oh? What weren’t you honest about?” Of course Shmit remembered the day they met, she was such a nice woman and she wished she could have learned more about her then.
