John disappears. REALLY disappears, no breadcrumbs for his sons to follow. Maybe Sam takes a semester off to help Dean search but eventually gives up. Maybe he makes Dean take him back at the end of the week as planned.
Maybe he’s still too raw from being disowned for going to college and just flat refuses. But either way, Sam goes back to Stanford. Maybe he hasn’t met Jess yet. Maybe he never lets her get close, with the fresh reminder of his father’s lifelong pattern of neglect and abandonment in his mind.
Maybe Sam still goes through the ordeal in Cold Oak, South Dakota. But this is a Sam who refuses to let people close or rely on others. No longer focused on helping people, he walks away the last man standing. Hell can have its king…except that was never Sam’s true purpose, was it?
Lucifer. They need to free Lucifer. But righteous men in hell are a rarity, and one of their options has disappeared. And their other? He lives alone, without a brother he loves more than life itself, without the weight of his father’s sacrifice on his shoulders. He has no one to sell his soul for, and no reason to feel that he should.
No righteous man, no broken first seal. No broken first seal, no Apocalypse. And maybe that’s how it was supposed to be. After all, the angels did say they kicked things off a bit early.
But the pieces are all in place, just waiting. Sam, the boy king…now a cold and driven man, selling ambition and isolation to the masses. Dean, the good son whose father is missing, alone, angry, tired. No longer looking for a purpose. Just waiting for the end.
So imagine when the next righteous man finally sells his soul. Imagine how far apart Sam and Dean will have drifted by then. Imagine how little resistance Sam will put up when Lucifer offers him power beyond his wildest dreams.
Imagine how Dean will react to the appearance of an angel named Michael, giving him a chance to save the world and lay waste to the demonic forces that have taken his entire family…and a promise of rest at last.
The Apocalypse is right on time.
