mic test..2023!
Part of the journey is the ending. Looking forward to what 2020 have installed for all of us! To more dancing! (and writing (; )
Season 2019: THE UNCOMMON
As the year is about to end, I feel extremely nostalgic looking back at what and who I’ve encounter this year. I was given the opportunity to experience what competitive dancing is like with the tittle of being in the “State Team’. Before the year ends, I would like to dedicate a few words to my 24 to 13 to 26 OGs that made up UNCOMMON.
Hello Boba Addicts,
We’ve been dancing together for long enough and you all had filled my past few months with plenty joyful moments as well as not so joyful ones. After what we’ve heard, learned, seen, I had this sudden urge to write about us.
We first met each other during our audition trainings and I’m not going to lie, I was extremely intimidated by all of you. I can vividly remember, as soon as the music plays, You guys radiate determination and strong desires of wanting to be the chosen ones for our team. We never really gotten the chance to talk and know each other better prior to selections and knowing that our first competition together was a month away, didn’t give me good vibes at all, in fact I was worried and thought it would be a disaster. 23 dancers, 5 weeks, 2:45 minutes routine, I think if you were me, you would feel the same. It wasn’t until the day itself I felt at ease, I told myself “you know what, you got this!” and we got this! Came home 5th, but come on what can you expect when you still got scolded for messing up the night before.
It all started falling when people started leaving. I’m not going to lie, I was THISSS close in having zero confidence in our team. I remembered having dinner with Yi Ting and Marcus, I was asking them whether is it my fault for not being confident with my own team when literally everyone was leaving. I really have thank the both of them for keeping me grounded or else I would’ve left as well.
We can all agree that it was during TJD preparation where our bond strengthen, our minds started to think alike and we started to have the same goal, which was to be better each time the music plays. Sometimes we did, sometimes failed. It’s Okay! We can always try again.
it may be because of our bond, we started to receive more encouragements and more constructive criticisms, we approached TJD not for “experience” anymore, but more to actually wanting to achieve something. I might have set my hopes and expectations too high that night, that I disappointed myself, but you guys were there to remind me that thought we didn’t win, we still achieved our goal of performing better that the last one and our results proved so.
That nigh hit me hard, I remember literally throwing myself onto Yi Ting and cried, because yes we didn’t win but also because I’ve realised how much of a family the 13 (14 if you include Teacher Danial) had become. I truly respect and love guys a lot! You guys played such an important role in my journey as a dancer as well engraving yourselves so deeply into my heart. I know we are going through a new phase right now, but I hope we can welcome our friends with open arms and love them as well.
MUCH LOVE TO YOU ALL!
ROYAL FAMILY ASIA TOUR IN KL
It was an amazing experience; being able to attend the showcase, really. You all who didn’t make it missed out plenty. The show was kick started off with the iconic BBHMM routine that went VIRAL!! See that on my screens already got me screaming, can you imagine watching it in person. OMG IT WAS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! Really hit me deep to the core.
They did everything and everything as in LEGIT EVERYTHING! From the trademarked Reggae to Hip-Hop to Contemporary Choreography. Really enjoyed the vibes produced but there’s a specific part of the entire show that I could really relate to and it’s definitely going to be the Contemporary Choreography.
Other than Sean Lew and Kaycee Rice’s Silence, there isn’t any other dance that moved me to tears and made me feel the struggles, understand the message that the dancer is trying to give out, but last night changed that. The boys from RF made me realise the true motive of dance. To connect. The rhythm, the visual, it was all on point. It was what I was trying to look for in myself but couldn’t find. What I want to achieve, but couldn’t be seen. All the answers were given to me last night by the group of dancers that I’ve been looking up to since the beginning of this journey.
I payed 120 dollar for the show, but definitely brought home knowledge that worth infinite. I’m so thankful for everyone who’s involved in organising this, thank you. Really hope to be able to experience this vibe very soon. #CrownsUp

Body Shaming
this is something that i’ve encounter many times. you see, i wasn’t the “ideal type” with long legs, flat chest and butt; it sure was a problem, not with the dance choreography but with the environment.
now that i’m older and wiser, if i have to describe with one word about the ideology of the public as well as the majority of parents who’ve been sending their children for dance classes, is toxic.
dancing is not about having a “good’ or “hot” body and if you think people who dances are supposed to be or meant to be so, you are living in a lie. it’s about the execution of complex movements. it’s art, like painting, you don’t have to be “slim” to do it.
my most recent encounter with body shaming was an indirect message from a parent of a beginner student. she saw me performing a contemporary piece choreographed by my teacher and started criticising about how big of a frame i have.
i would like to justify that ballet or any dance in general is not about your weight, it’s about your stregth. the stronger you are, the longer you can hold your arabasque during your adage. the stronger you are, the sharper you can whack. the stronger you are, the tighter your footwork is.
it’s unexceptable, for one to be this ignorant. it’s as if they never seek prior knowledge about dancing before enrolling their children for dance lessons.
i would like to take this opportunity to tell you that, dancing is a form of art. it’s limitless. anyone can do it, anyone can make it as long as you are willing to.
Dance Beyond 2018
small stage but a big impact to my journey as a dancer.
Reaching home at 12am almost every training nights, shower and homework; only to sleep at 1:30am and wake up at 6am. THIS IS BY FAR, THE MOST COMMITTED I’VE BEEN TOWARDS A COMPETITION LOL! I had to rely on coffee for a week, just so I can understand my Chemistry lessons, and all those free periods I have in school were spent choreographing my solo piece.
“Not enough this, not enough that.” Those were the only words I hear during trainings.
“Not good enough….again!”
“You dance like a soulless person!”
I was never pushed so harshly by anyone before. I felt angry, frustration, and for some reasons, jealousy. It was mentally challenging because every time when the music stops, there will be a constructive criticism coming my way.
I honestly have no idea how I been through this, but as I’ve say during the competition, I’m glad I picked up this challenge. This event has proven me wrong and that I have more potential in me than I ever knew.
Thank you so much to whomever who’ve help me out; may it be just a good luck message or practically helping me with the choreography. Thank you for helping me find myself. 🙏
a decade with them. Let's grow stronger! 💝🌈🙌
SKL Charity Concert 2016 My first street dance performance. before my encounter with this bunch, i've only been doing K-pop dance covers. My experience with this bunch was a hella rollercoaster ride. There were many miscommunication within the group but we managed ; the final product was BOMBSICLES!! This was also when I've found my newly cultured passion for street dancing and was also my starting point to where i am today.
DA Dance Tour 2014.
It was definitely a wonderful experience being able to represent my country, Malaysia, to New Zealand and share my passion and knowledge about dance to the students there.
I performed the Bharathanatiyam - Indian Classical Dance - as the opening performance, the Ngajat Dance - East Malaysian or Harvest Dance - and the Peacock dance during the finale.
One really important thing I’ve learnt from this trip is patriotism. Putting Malaysia on the map was something I’ve only dreamt of doing before this happened; it’s really an unforgettable moment performing on that stage. Definitely a highlight of my dance journey.
hello, i'm rachel and i'm a dancer. this is going to be my only platform to express my doubts, fears and ,surprisingly, achievements from my ongoing journey as a dancer here in malaysia. i hope my stories and experiences will be able to inspire or motivate anyone out there who thinks their not "good enough" to be a dancer. dancing has no limits. 🌈
