I had a sort of Rhinky dream last night. In my dream, I was in high school with Rhett and Link. I was Rhett’s next door neighbor. We had a long conversation sitting under his basketball hoop about how his dad was pressuring him to do all these things: play basketball, become an engineer, marry a woman, and join the Republican Party. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, “I just want to marry Link and be happy.” 💔

Yu Guangzhong (b. 1928) is a Taiwanese writer and scholar. He and his family fled his birth city of Nanjing in 1950 following the founding of the People’s Republic of China under the Communist party, eventually settling in Taiwan. As he was in his twenties at the time, many of Yu’s works focus on his longing for the mainland, to which he could not return for a long time.
