Andrea's Nabhi
Where do Nabhies come from?
Nabhies come from a secret beach in the Aegean, yet practically undiscovered. Once a year, for just a day or two, I go to choose them, taking plenty of time to consider their weight, their shape, how they feel in the hand, how they turn or rest…. The collection is comprised of the raw stones that can fit in my pockets and hands and be taken with me, those that made it the risky way back. Nabhies are all unique; they have their own personality and story forged by centuries of waves and days of drawing and attention to their adornment.
some of the first Nabhies i did. Exchanged them with eggs and good wine and cheese in Greece (summer 2011)
Natural art or human art?
The repetitive and detached movement of the sea moulds them. I only have to pick those that are ripe, whose shape and texture have reached maturity. I move them around in my hand; they’re vibrating with the sounds and the fragrance in which they are formed. When these stones are brought out of context, they appear nude, mute and somehow lost. The process of drawing on them is a way to deliver them with a second skin, into their new environment; by creating a new surface that contains all their being and integrity, with the same repetitive and detached gestures that formed them. It took a very long time before drawing on my first raw stones. They are adopted, reborn, and delivered.
my pocket nabhies, just in case i have no cash or meet a friend.

Where can i find a Nabhi?
No where.
A Nabhi will find you some where.
