We decided to make the long trip to the Capital of NASCAR for the longest race of the year, the #Coke600. Our 1,550-mile round trip covered seven states—Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Our tickets should’ve included an “obstructed view” warning because we could only see a sliver of Turn 2. It was pretty much like sitting behind a post at Wrigley Field.

So we made a field adjustment and rigged up our own half-assed media center back at the campsite behind Turn 3 with the FanVision and some tie straps.

Last September marked my fourth visit to my adopted hometown track (about an hour from my place). Pretty much your standard intermediate except for the unique curved backstretch. The main reason I love going to Chicagoland (other than the short trip) is the pit corral that allows fans access to a huge area right behind pit lane during the entire race.

I haven't seen anything quite like it in my travels across NASCAR Nation and would highly recommend getting pit passes to anyone looking for a insider's perspective as the race unfolds. You can pretty much park yourself behind any team you'd like or walk up and down pit road. We were right behind Brad Keselowski's crew when he made one of the best passes I've ever seen (on the jumbotron right behind us) to eventually take the win. So awesome.

I used to go to MIS with my dad all through the ’80s when I was a kid but hadn’t been back in about 25 years until this past August. Felt good to come home. Fantastic camping facilities including a 24-hour convenience store.

The “fastest track in NASCAR” lived up to it’s monicker with typical qualifying speeds reaching in excess of 200 MPH and corner entry speeds around 215. But that’s probably the last time we’ll see those kinds of speeds again due to the significant horsepower reduction coming in 2015. Glad I was there to see the end of an era.

'13 lived up to it's unluckiness when it came to rainouts. Kentucky's Saturday night race got rained out and we couldn't stick around for the rescheduled race on Sunday because of the long drive home ahead of us (we also got rained on at Chicagoland later that September). But at least Joe got to debut his prized Harry Gant hat at the Nationwide race on Friday before the deluge.

I don’t think we could’ve had better seats for the start of our first night race at Bristol back in 2011. Joe and Josh look about as stoked as I was.
