ever made an edit and erased something you didn’t want to erase ?? have trouble finessing something because ctrl + z can only do so much ?? fret no more. layer mask is the tiny friend that has your back no matter what, and it’s super easy to use. let’s get started, shall we ??
step 1. add your layers. for this example, we’re going to keep it pretty straight forward, but once you’ve mastered this particular skill, the sky is the limit.
step 2. add the mask. it’s the third icon from the left, and it looks like a rectangle with a circle in the middle. the white rectangle that appears to the right of your layer allows you to edit things non-destructively, which means that the original does not change in the process. thus, if you erase something, you can easily add it back.
say you want to erase the woman’s dress and make it match the background (remember !! the layer mask will always reveal the layer underneath). it’s easy !! if you click on the layer mask, you’ll notice that your colours in the picker become black and white respectively. in order to erase, you’ll have to use black. if you want to add something back, you’ll have to use white. to toggle between the two fast, press the X KEY.
protip: use a soft brush if you’re not dealing with hard edges. that way, you’ll be able to have a little more control. take as much time as you want with this.
in order to reveal the picture again, switch to white and do whatever adjustment you see fit. experiment with it, because once you’ve learned how to use it, you’ll never go back to erasing anything.
BUT WAIT !! there’s more. masks can also be applied to groups. ever wondered how circle icons work ?? wanted to apply a psd or colouring or adjustments to only a part of your picture ?? this is precisely how.
add whatever colouring/psd you want, and, following step 2 again, add the layer mask, but this time to the whole folder. you want it to only affect the subject ?? no problem. simply paint with black !!
and there you have it: a quick overview of layer masks and why you should totally befriend them, because they’re here to help.
his name was nikolai. the ribbon belonged to his mother. she had . . . sewn it into his shirt so he would have something of hers near his heart. there was no priest. just us . . . saying we loved each other. this was the only ring he could give me. it was good we had each other, even for a short time.
