Publishing While Black: A Scratch Roundtable

I can’t tell you how hard I was nodding my head in agreement while reading this post, especially at these parts:

What did it feel like when you were starting out to encounter that—to be like, “I’m entering into a business that is not particularly welcoming to me. How do I do that?”

Harmony Holiday: I don’t think you can go about it thinking like that. For me, what’s worked is just literally not thinking about it at all. Putting on some sort of blinders, so you’re not always working with that anxiety.

That is exactly what I do! And:

Holiday: Being black in America, you kind of grow up knowing from the beginning what about you sells, or what is fetishized about you. So on some level you have an advantage. It’s just somewhere in your subconscious at all times as a sort of protective evolutionary device. You know how your “brand” is. My first book was blatantly called Negro League Baseball. Not because it was pandering to that; because that’s what it needed to be called. But I do think being that flamboyant about something, if it’s in your personality, that’s maybe what sells, besides the quality of the work.

Yes. I had a discussion with another writer recently about what my “brand” was, and she said, “Your brand is lesbians.” It’s not fair, because if you write a book about straight people, nobody says “Your brand is straight people.” But that’s the way it is, and I feel like the only way I can be happy in this business is to own it and simultaneously not think about it so that it doesn’t stunt my creativity.

Anyway, the whole post is totally worth reading if you’re interested in diversity issues and racism in publishing.

Here are two little black girls, talking about their passion for dancing, and how it makes them feel, and what they want to do with it. “I’ll describe my dancing like … powerful and just hardcore,” says B-girl Terra. “I’ll describe my dancing as elegant,” says the older Eddie, “and swagger and essence.” As a grown up, she wants to be a dance teacher and a hairdresser (her hair is beautiful right now, packed up into a high, bouncy ponytail). Terra has her own ambitions too: “I see myself growing up as a dancing mermaid and go all over the world and explore things and make everybody happy.” Their words are beautiful, sure, but it is in their movements that joy is given a real stage. Look at it, and remember what it looks like.

We often see #carefreeblackgirl out there in the wild internet, and many seem to wilfully misunderstand the hashtag’s purpose: we’re (I’m) not saying there aren’t things to worry about, or that success and creativity come about without grit, determination, hard work and strife, just that pain and constant struggle are not the only things that define us. Those are not the only adjectives we have access to. Terra and Eddie are laughing, even as they describe “practising every day” and watching YouTube videos to learn and be inspired by. They are also having fun, and enjoying the pursuit of excellence in the thing they love, even when they sometimes fail.

When we talk about androgynous fashion, we usually mean female-presenting people in outfits that incorporate or echo menswear. One seldom sees male-presenting people doing the same with womenswear, at least in the mainstream.

I think some of that must be a side effect of the privileging of traits, roles, and characteristics associated with masculinity over those associated with femininity—a woman in masculine-associated roles or clothing is moving in the direction of higher status and increased social privilege, at least implicitly; a man in feminine-associated roles or clothing, lower. We associate women in menswear with freedom and assertion; men in womenswear with deviation, grotesquerie, and parody.

How fucked up is that?
