#13 nope

Dear Diary,

We regrouped and landed on a planet that one of the trainers deemed habitable.

He was right. The planet had life.

The life was about to eat us.

We are stranded here, since the pods are one-time use only. They sent an SOS back home go another ship here. That might take days, perhaps even weeks. And this planet has hungry carnivorous life.

Basically? We're screwed.

I didn't see any of the animals (can I even call them animals?) around but their weird noises and tells echoing through the rocky landscape is enough to send me into hiding. We have enough food and water in the pods to last us months, so that isn't a problem. I just hope none of us become the food while we're stuck on this planet.

It's a beautiful thing, though. There are caves as far as the eye can see. Some with tiny glowing Crystal's embedded in the walls. The sky is on fire. Something like the Aurora borealis but red and orange. I can see the stars and galaxies up there. It's gorgeous.

I've always wanted a normal hobby. Photography sounds tempting about now. I could make a scrapbook with all these memories.

I think I will.

#12 Survival

Dear Diary,

Hooray, I'm alive.

I know, I know. I'm surprised, too. Most asteroids missed me, some I duck, a couple grazed the ship but no lasting damage.

The ship is on autopilot. The navigation systems are back on and a trainer found my pod.

So, I'm going to sleep for the next twelve hours. G'nite.

#11 Yup. Asteroids.

Dear Diary,

I know what terror feels like. Here I am sitting in a fault escape pod in deep space, with no help in sight and I think a bunch of space rocks are going to crash into me. I'm trying to steer the pod safely through, but all I had was a two-hour introductory lesson on how-to-fly-escape-pods.

I bet the others aren't having this problem. I think the universe hates me.

In other news, the view outside is gorgeous. As you'd expect. Deep space. Stars and galaxies. You know the drill. It's been over 24 hours. So far, I've succeeded in dodging the asteroids and heading in approximately the right direction (damn the screwed up nav system) but at some point, the adrenaline is going to wear off and I'm going to fall asleep, this pod is going to crash into a rock and I'll be dead. Goodbye world. Bye-bye mom, dad, stupid brother. I'd be alive if I'd stayed with you... but even if I knew what would happen, I wouldn't have made a different choice.

The past few days were amazing.

#10 I think I’m lost

Dear Diary,

There are two explanations for the situation I’m in. 

1. I’m an idiot who doesn’t know what buttons to press. 

2. I’m the unlucky girl who got stuck in the escape pod with a faulty navigation system. 

Probably bit of both. I know the basics, okay? I remember what buttons to push. I remember the lessons. I got in touch with the others, but they can’t locate my pod either. 

Am I going to die? Nope. I’m not that unlucky...am I?

I’m not. I hope. 

I’m gonna be fine. 

I’m lost in deep space with no way of figuring out where to go. What’s the worst that could go wrong?

Wait, are those asteroids?

2AM Thoughts

I think human beings as a species are hopelessly optimistic. They look for the silver lining in every cloud of doom. They dream of a better world, a better future without ever cowering in the face of the monumentous odds against them.

I guess one of the reasons I say that is because history only has evidence of the people who cared enough to act. And these people left a mark. Sometimes, it was a scar. Hell, sometimes it was a deep wound that might never heal. But mostly, there were small incremental improvements over centuries and millennia by people who never imagined what their contributions might ultimately lead to...

Look at where we are now. Look at all that we have and try convincing me that humans aren't capable of great things.

Maybe you could have said that when the greatest feat a human could accomplish was surviving the winter, maybe you could even have said that in the twentieth century when bodies were piling left, right and centre in the wars and the concentration camps and the epidemics. But we survived that. I don't know how much we learned from it, as a species. Not enough, one would presume since a majority of our population doesn't even know what happened. We have a lot to learn. We have a lot of work to do.

Do your part. Pick the part you want to play in helping along the progress of this planet, build on the work of the people before you and perhaps other people will build on your work until leads to something you might currently consider impossible.

Theres a lot of shit that needs to be done. And who knows, you might be just the person for the job.

It's ridiculous the things that stop people from being who they could be. Fear. Doubt. Uncertainty. Seriously? That is what you're going to lose your battles to? If you're going to fail, at least find an opponent worthy enough to beat you.

What's the point of life?

The one thing you want to hold on to when the abyss is sucking you inside is the knowledge that there's no one in the universe exactly like you. You exist. You breathe. You live. You don't just have the potential, the possibility... you have the responsibility to make that count. You're capable of all things you want to be capable of. You can move whole mountain ranges if you like. You can inspire people, you can change lives, you can build something to last for centuries and I believe you have a moral duty to yourself and to everyone you love, to everyone who lived before you and to every single person who'll ever walk this same world after you, you have the duty to be the best you can possibly be and to live the most amazing life that you possibly can. So, go ahead and do it. Live.

Find out what your best is, and then try to break that record.

If you've ever wondered what the point of life is, here it is in plain words. Magic. Wonder. Love. Meaning. There's a flame that needs to be lit, there are words that need to be said, things to be learned, changes to be made; the universe has been waiting for your existence for fourteen billion years and now you're here, and you have a choice. Your life could mean nothing. Or it could mean everything. The universe doesn't decide that for you. The answer isn't hidden in science or mathematics. There isn't a formula or a theory for that. It's a decision and it's a decision you must make for the clock is ticking and the sands of time and running out of your hands.

It's your choice.

I hope, years later, when you're breathing your last and the world is but a memory soon to be lost forever, I hope you're happy with the choice you made.

#8 Malfunction

Dear Diary,

Something is wrong. The ship is making squeaky sounds and our trainers are all locked up in the console room, doing heaven knows what. It's funny, the things your brain will conjure up when it doesn't have the facts. There are four of us sitting around a flashlight in a dark room, placing morbid bets on how fast the ship will blow up.

I say never.

I have optimism and statistics to back me up.

We have a contingency plan, anyway. Proper escape pods for everyone of board autoprogrammed to activate. We know how to use them... Or at least, we know how to not blow them up.

It won't come to that...right?

This ship can't just... blow up?

#7 Another day in the ship

Dear Diary,

I've been working for eighteen hours straight. Four hours lessons, two hours personal project, two hours lessons again, three hours learning for my personal project and the rest brainstorming and planning about how to go through with it. I have a rough prototype plan that I can make in a month. Two months.

But later.

I'm just so tired right now. I hope it works. I really hope this works because if it doesn't, my whole career will be a lonely all-work-and-no-play confusing mess.

In other news, we took off from the volcano planet, which I don't mind, and had a test flight session in the escape pod. I was inside the Spiral Nebula. Well, inside an escape pod, but same thing. Goodness, that thing is gorgeous. All red and misty with those black holes scattered around.

They laid out the career paths today. I picked the Settlement manager. Two years training. Another two years working under guidance. A year working with a partner. And then I can go off on my own. It had the shortest learning time and the most benefits. Exploration on a daily basis, new planets every week or so, helping people make new homes, taking care of dangerous resident life forms. Tons of downtime to travel the galaxies. Plus, five years later MY VERY OWN SPACESHIP. God, I'm so excited.

#6 The New Planet

Dear Diary,

Disappointment. That’s one thing I didn’t expect to feel. We landed on a planet that is all rocks and volcanoes. Like baby Earth. 

At least, that’s all I could see from the spaceship. They didn’t let us out. 

I saw a volcano throw up, so the experience wasn’t all bad. 

That’s all today. It’s my brother’s birthday, back home. I miss him. I miss them all. I mean, space food is fine, but I miss the cooking games at home. The cookies and cakes.
