One thing that I like about Tuvok, which I feel like he has going for him more than any other Vulcan character, is that you really feel like his logic and emotional control are actually very good things. Like, my reading of episodes like "Meld" and "Random Thoughts" is that he's actually kind of a psychopath, or at least he would be if he hadn't derived a logical code of morality for himself. For Spock, the whole "emotional control" thing always comes off as kind of tragic.
#star trek #suddenly tempted to extrapolate wildly that maybe vulcans DON'T have the pack-bonding urge™ that humans are so proud of #it's just not there #they bond with their own kids and perhaps a sexual partner and that's IT #they can and do develop sincere affection for others #but it takes MUCH more time and bonding experiences than it does for humans #but in general they are just not moved by empathy #don't got it. don't need it. don't want it. #spock's emotional control is tragic because he does have a lot of natural empathy #not only from his human mom but from his dad the og wild and crazy vulcan party boy #so if he let intuition and emotional desire guide him they'd mostly guide him down pretty good paths actually #he'd be fine #but he is unusual in this! #most vulcans care only for their own close kin and genuinely could not care less if a stranger dies on their doorstep #but! moral principles do not depend on empathy #a deep and sincere desire to see all people live well does not depend on empathy #and the coldest most selfish cost-benefit analysis DOES end up on 'you will be individually better off if society is safe for everyone' #so here they are #anyway I don't even know enough star trek to point at why I'm wrong lmao but I'm sure there's plenty of evidence against #however I am enamored of this notion and will be contemplating it for the foreseeable future (via @aethersea)
If I’m remembering correctly, in @dianeduane ‘s Spock’s World they introduce the concept that on earth we fear the stranger more than our neighbors, but on Vulcan it was more likely to be your neighbor who stabbed you in the back than someone you’ve never met.
I remember thinking that it’s funny that humans fear the stranger because statistically in the US anyway most violent crimes are committed by someone the victim knows. But it’s true that we have a stronger “tribal” pull than Vulcans are afforded.
On the other hand I don’t think that’s a lack of empathy, I think it’s a trauma response.
I think that's a valid point! Surak philosophy was essentially a backlash to centuries of trauma stemming from emotion-fuelled warfare!
We should also consider the role Vulcan telepathy plays in this compounding cycle of trauma/violence. TOS has a few episodes that imply Vulcans share long distance communal telepathic spaces where their emotions and thoughts converge, spread, and influence one another.
For example, in "The Immunity Syndrome," Spock hears the terrufued dying thoughts of hundreds of Vulcans from across the local star system. He immediately freaks out and collapses in shock with no warning.
"All Our Yesterdays" is even more explicit about this: when Spock travels back in time to "the pre-Surak era" his self-control erodes and he starts acting on impulse: He loses his temper, eats meat, threatens to hurt McCoy for insulting him, makes out with Zarabeth shamelessly, and almost abandons Starfleet for her bc he didn't want to be alone.
While all of these actions are Spock's, it seems that general Vulcan disposition is partially influenced/moderated by a sort of "gestalt consciousness" they share via telepathy. This would explain the need for such strict discipline, not just to teach individual lessons, but also to build a literal safety net that keeps Vulcan behavior in check should they slip up.
Without this safety net, their emotions run wild and spread like bushfire. If you looked at a Vulcan wrong or stepped on their toe, you'd bring a whole crowd down on you as their anger spread and snowballed into a collective avalanche.
I wonder if this implied shared telepathy was the real reason the Stone of Gol was so dangerous. Not just thag Vulcan emotions are difficult to calm, but also because their shared telepathy meant that their anger could spread through entire groups and make them all targets for the weapon.
Picard would have died fo the Stone of Gol if he'd rushed for the gun, but if he had Vulcan style telepathy, odds are the entire crew would have died too.
The idea that following the teachings of Surak essentially results in the same kind of population health protection as vaccines provide against bacteria and viruses is a fascinating one! If 95% of the population is practicing the teachings then an occasional Vulcan who has lost control for biological or other reasons wouldn’t have a huge impact on society. But I bet a collapse of 20% of the population deciding not to follow the teachings would bring down the whole system.
And it also makes the story of Romulans more interesting. I’m not caught up on the canonical lore past TNG but the shows and the books up to that point established that the Romulans are actually Vulcans who rejected Surak’s teachings and decided they would rather leave than change. (SOOO many political allegories!)
Romulus is the world without the psychic vaccine and Vulcan is the world that has it.
BTW if you haven’t read @dduane ‘s Spock’s World, it is a fascinating look at not just the psychic powers but also the growth of a violent society where revenge is a driving strategy for gaining power. Bonus points for strong Vulcan women throughout. And an origin story for Spock’s conception that I think has also been knocked out of canon, but makes more sense than the canon one.
I NEED to read Spock's World! Its sitting on my bookshelf + a dozen other books I need to read lol
Idk if you've seen any of SNW, but 3x08 both reinforces the "Vulcans and Romulans are the same species with different religious/philosophical teachings" bit, and potentially implies (via a certain character) that Vulcans & Romulans might actually be augments of proto-Vulcans.
Which, if true, goes a long way into explaining their general dispositions, their enhanced physiologies, and the biological and historical parallels between Vulcans/Romulans and Human Augments. And slots in nicely with D. Duane's interpretation of pre-Surak Vulcans as basically "paranoid Red Scare-era Americas with psychic powers and 4Chan internet boards"
honestly? abandoned/on indefinite hiatus/very slow to update fics, even and especially AUs and longfics, are often some of my absolute favorites. and people who refuse to read them are missing out!
for one, stories don’t have to be finished to be enjoyable and worth reading. but also? an unfinished fic is a whole little universe that just keeps on existing in my head! their world stays alive for me in a way that doesn’t always happen with fics I binge read and finish, and i love it. i don’t know how their story ends, so it just keeps going! and even when those stories DO update and finish years later, they’ve been in my head for so long that they stick around like old friends.
so to any author with unfinished works: thank you SO much for sharing what you had without waiting to finish it first. you’re just giving me the gift of getting to spend more time with your story and your idea. if you do update again someday, i’ll be delighted to jump back in! but if you don’t, just know a little piece of your world still lives on in a beloved tiny terrarium in my brain. i promise i’m taking good care of it :)
i don’t normally ask this, but if this resonates with you please reblog it, so it can reach the authors who need to hear it <3
Please...I AM BEGGING for ANY Travis Mayweather x reader ANYTHING! I just love him tbh and I'm sad that like, no one has written for him bc he is genuinely pookie.
I AM SO SORRY ANON!!! I have not watched Enterprise in YEARS!! And sadly I have not been active on this blog for like a million years as well.
BUT I have a special deal for you if you enjoy Voyager. I’ve been watching Voyager with my husband and I have an itch to write for it.
if you're worried about the new ToS for AO3, please remember that you are primed to distrust because of the way politics are intertwining with the internet right now. remember to look into definitions yourself, fact check, and look through the logic lense before jumping to conclusions.
AFAIK right now, the update clarifies terms that have already existed. it's not changing as much as it is clarity-rewriting. i'm still looking through the legalese (law student, i'm learning as I go) and I will be checking in again later, but don't despair.
however, don't get lax. download fics, connect with the authors, build out your communities. comment and bookmark and save, and please don't stop writing.
the privacy policy update Ao3 asks you to agree to is vague, but already required. in the same way your IP address is required when submitting content, personal information is provided when a complaint is submitted about you--to email you. and address the complaint.
in the same way that any investigation from a department of law requires a business to provide information, Ao3 is asking you to agree that, in the occurrence of a legal investigation, your personal information (IP address included) will be given if legally required.
NOW, this means:
An investigation has to occur (uncommon);
The investigation involves you, due to a complaint or a suspicion of criminal involvement (situational);
The investigation specifically requires your personal information to be resolved (very rare);
Ao3 deems your information necessary, and divulges it in accordance with law (a clear layer of common sense between you and reckless investigation)
so. what can you do to avoid this occuring?
Don't do crime;
Don't harrass people;
Don't put your real name/age/address/SSN online;
Clearly warn your works in tags and notes;
and follow the general rules of online safety
there. we're not over project 2025, we're not over the safety of ao3 being threatened via law, but your personal information will not be divulged without Very Clear Proceeding Steps visible to literally everyone around you that scream "WE'RE LOOKING AT INDIVIDUALS". the government simply does not have time to target every single person online. this is something every online service has to provide--in the case of a personal investigation.
so don't become the subject of a personal investigation, and you should be fine.
Out of all the explanations I've been reading today for this, this is the one I've found the easiest to understand and most helpful, so I'm reblogging in case this helps anyone else. I was worried about the update because the last time I read the TOS was when I created my account years ago and don't remember much lmao.
But yeah, don't be complacent in case the current situation changes but it should be fine for now. Probably. Check for yourselves and read the TOS in case you're still doubting is the best advice I think I can give here.
Some people really need to read the original Death to the Author theory and also read up on unreliable narrators before they start saying what is and isn’t canon and what they are doing isn’t misrepresentation(and bad interpretation) of a media.
anyway i like never really know how to talk about this because i don't want to come off like i think i'm better than anyone else. i'm very much prone to my own bits of bitchiness and i'm sure i've said things on here that are contradictory, not fair, not thoughtful or not kind, but i really wish, broadly speaking, that we could talk about creative pursuits in a slightly gentler way. i think the constant flux of "he would not fucking say that" posts and condescending diatribes about the Right way to write something [a character, a type of story, etc] are so incredibly discouraging to new writers. you don't want to be someone's "he would not fucking say that," so you sit around and feel ashamed and scared to share your writing, afraid of ridicule. it sucks. i don't like it.
Do you still write for Reed? There's isn't enough smut for him around and I'd love a Reed x female reader.....he's seems quite touch starved to me and I just wondered how he'd react to a new relationship 🙃❤️
I am so so sorry. I should probably update this blog more, i really do not write that much anymore outside of my own self ships and I’m mostly off this blog now.
Good luck though. You are absolutely right! Malcolm Reed would absolutely be touch starved and stuff.
I want to have something more than love for you. I want to know your very soul, because it feels as though we are perfect for each other… but if that were true, the universe would have done better bringing us together. I want our souls to meet so that I can finally rest in knowing that even if soul mates do exist, you are not that.
Really curious cause there has been some talk in a Writing Server I'm in and I really want to know other people's thoughts. This is for ANYONE who likes to read fanfic, even if you only read it sparingly. I will make one for writers too, linked here.
How long do you like your fics to be?
I won't read anything under 10k
I only like reading things under 5k
I will read things that are 2k as long as there is a promise for more (chapters)
I don't care about length, I read for tags/themes/tropes
30k plus please
I don't read fic/show me the answers

Welcome back, Sara!!! For a fluffy Mike idea, maybe just a cozy rainy day spent at home with Mike and Abby? Like watching movies with cups of hot cocoa under a mountain of blankets, and all that jazz
Hi Logan ☺️☺️☺️ thanks for sending this in. I’m always afraid of writing fluff fics bc like everyone wants the smut, but it’s reassuring to have this put in lol
it’s a sunday and mike just so happens to have the day off. he’s been working long and hard hours and you convinced him to take the day off. you and abby are so excited; you two planned the whole day from the moment you woke up to the time it was time for abby to sleep. unfortunately, it’s rainy and a sudden wind chill swept through. none of you need to get sick and mike didn’t want to make making abby carry an umbrella, so you make the quick decision to stay in. abby’s a little disappointed, but you try to make up for it.
the first thing you and mike do in the morning is make a fort with abby. and not just a little four corners fort. no, she makes you cover the entire living room with blankets. even the tv was included! you and mike are dragged into some play-pretend games. for a lot of them mike’s forced to play some sort of villan.
“why can’t i play the hero, abby?” mike frowns. “because that’s her job!” abby points to you.
mike gives you a look and you shrug. “abby’s the director here. cant fight with the boss.”
mike rolls his eyes, wanting to get out of the humid blankets and sleep, but he knows how happy this makes abby. and even though abby is making him play the bad guy, he knows she means it out of love and he also loves getting to spend as much time with abby as he can. watching you act is pretty cute as well.
once abby gets bored of playing in her fort — which is like 3 hours later — she decides she wants to watch a movie.
“let’s clean up first, yeah?” mike suggests. “no! let’s keep the fort up to watch the movie!” abby says.
“abby, no. we had our fun with the fort. it’s time to turn the house back to normal,” mike says. “please say we can keep the fort up!” abby pouts as she looks up at you.
mike gives you a warning look, but you can’t say no to abby. “let’s just keep the fort up for the movie, yeah?”
abby squeals and wiggles back into the fort. mike glares at you. “she’s never going to want to take it down.”
“she will when it’s time for bed, which is hours away.” you step closer to him, gently putting your hand on his shoulder. “how about i pop some popcorn — the real stuff on the stove — and i make us some hot coca, okay?”
well, who was mike to turn down stove-popped popcorn and hot cocoa. he felt like a little kid again. it doesn’t help that you and abby’s pouty faces were ganging up on him. he sighs in defeat and nods, crossing his arms around his chest.
“fine, but after the movie, we will clean all this up, okay?”
“of course,” you nod. you turn to abby who is lit up with excitement. “can i pick the movie?”
“yep! do you want any popcorn?” you ask her. “yes. can you put m&ms in mine?” she asks. “you got it, babe,” you answer.
you three settle in the fort, abby laying on her stomach right in front of the tv. she chose “Lady and The Tramp”, which was one of her more enjoyable movie choices.
“mike, you’re kind of like the tramp,” abby comments, popping a handful of popcorn and m&ms into her mouth.
you begin to laugh but cover it up with a cough when mike shoots you a glare. “abby, that’s not very nice.”
“he knows it’s true,” she says, kicking her feet up and dangling them in the air. “And you’re like Lady.”
you glance at mike, a small smile on your face. you lean into him, your nose brushing against the scruff on his cheek. “i think what she’s trying to say is that we are perfect for each other.”
the tips of his ears turn pink. he wraps his arm around you, pulling you in so your head rests on his shoulder. “she could’ve said it differently, though.”
you giggle, “nah, i think it’s accurate.” he rolls his eyes, but there’s no denying the smile on his face and twinkle in his eye.
mike ends up falling asleep towards the end of the movie. his head rests on your chest, both arms around your waist to hold you close. your hands are in his hair, massaging his scalp while the credits roll.
“why is he so tired all the time?” abby pouts. “he works a lot,” you say. “but i’m sure he’ll wake up soon. why don’t you help me clean the fort up?”
“do i have to?” abby frowns. “i think mike would appreciate that,” you say.
“ugh, fine. but only if we can have pancakes for dinner.”
you grin and nod, “you got it.”
mike wakes up to the smell of chocolate chip pancakes. he twists and turns on the floor, the sizzle of bacon him bringing him into consciousness. he begins to open his eyes, his back beginning to ache from sleeping on the floor. he hears some giggling coming from the kitchen, sitting himself up on his elbow and peering over the couch. you’re at the stove, a spatula in your hand. abby’s sitting at the table, crayons littering the wood.
“look who’s up!” you exclaim. mike groans softly as he sits up, using the couch as a crutch to stand up. “i’m sorry i fell asleep. between the rain and the pillows —”
“shush,” you cut him off. he walks over to you, wrapping an arm around your waist, his fingers tracing sliver of skin on the small of your back that’s exposed. “i ruined our day.”
“no, you didn’t. right, abs?” you turn to her. “you did snore a lot, but you didn’t,” she says. you smile at mike, “see? all is well.”
“smells good.” he mumbles as he wraps both arms around your waist, placing his chin onto your shoulder.
“me or the food?” you glance at him with a teasing smile. he takes a not-so-nonchalant inhale of your skin. “both,” he answers.
“ew!” abby grimaces behind you two. you and mike both laugh and he presses a kiss to your cheek before pulling away. he brings some plates and silverware out, sitting across from abby and waiting for the food.
mike stares as you two discuss abby’s drawing. he can’t wipe the smiles off of his face. his life was never perfect and he knew it was never going to be, but if he could just keep this — keep you two — he would then be able to call it perfect.
“mike,” abby says with a little pout. “what’s up?” he asks.
“do you have to go back to work tomorrow?” she asks. “i do, but you also have to go back to school,” he states.
“i don’t want to,” she says. mike sighs, the calmness from his body fleeting. “you don’t have a choice, abby. i’m sorry.”
“i… i just mean… i want this day to last forever.”
his eyes widen and glance up at you. you’re rubbing her back soothingly, giving him an encouraging smile.
“maybe we can do something special for dinner again tomorrow,” you suggest. “we can watch a movie and even eat dinner on the couch.”
abby’s face lights up and she nods. “okay! can i pick the movie again?”
“only if you don’t compare me to a dog again,” mike says. abby giggles and puts a forkful of pancakes in her mouth before speaking again. “we’ll see,” she quips.
mike looks back at you, placing his hand inside of yours on the table. your feet slides up his calf, your eyes soft as you look over his face. his heart warms and for the first time in a while, he feels at peace.
I keep thinking about this post. Did you let me? As in did you not save me? and Did you let me? as in did you allow me the comfort of your embrace at the expense of your own pain, knowing tomorrow I would be back and fine but you’d still be feeling my blood against your skin?
One of my favorite phrases my Creative Writing professor had for when you’re writing fantasy is ‘giving your story a Flux Capacitor’.
Because it’s not real, it doesn’t exist. But the way it’s thrown into Back to the Future, at no point does it throw the audience off or suspend any more disbelief than time travel would. You believe Doc when he says he created the Flux Capacitor - the thing that makes time travel possible, because the universe never questions him.
So it essentially means like, there are going to be elements to your universe that are just not gonna make any sense, even if you set up a whole system based on it. And the only way to make it work is completely own it. You cannot second-guess your system or else the reader will too. You can give it the strangest explanation, but write it like you own it.
