Dark Cabaret Song of the Day #1
Dead girls Tell No Tales- Sarah and the Safe Word
Heavenly Hellos and Hellish Hiās!
I really miss over-obsessing about my favorite dead genre so- I hope to post more in 2026! I am really liking the new term that a lot of people are wrapping dark cabaret-esq elements into. āVaudegothā me likely.
CARAVAN OF THIEVES
Heavenly Helloās and Hellish Hiās! Welcome back to the void that is my Tumblr. Today on Dark Cabaret bands to love and appreciate:
Rattlesnake again? Well this time itās not Kabaret Sybarit, meet Caravan of Thieves! Caravan of Theives led by musical couple Fuzz Sangiovanni & Carrie Sangiovanni. The band began in 2008 and still performs locally with a rotation of many different artists performing and on records with them.
The two piece band resides in Bridgeport, Connecticut and still performs locally, individually and together! Their beginnings with the Dark Cabaret genre begin becauseā¦the people had spoken. They donāt consider their music to be Dark Cabaret but their debut album āBouquetā had struck a chord of Dark Cabinets alike and proved itself a worthy album among the Dark Cabaret greats.
The band is still active musically, regularly doing local shows at their local venues and Fuzz releasing a recent cover of āSweet Dreamsā as well as popping up here and there on his own. Their energy and music is quite amazing and I highly recommend a listen to this small group! One day theyāll consider themselves Dark cabaretā¦one day!!
Dark Cabaret List (AOTY)
Heavenly Hellos & Hellish Hi's! Hope all is well in the void that is my Tumblr. I have been addicted to the website 'Albumoftheyear.com' recently and have decided to put my addiction to rating music to some practical use and I have started a Dark Cabaret music list! my list includes my personal ratings, including short blurbs about how I feel about every project. If you're ever looking for a good list of Dark Cabaret music, there is another place to find one!
I, of course, also have two Spotify playlists to get wondering souls an easy route in or for those who perhaps just want another fan of the music's personal touch on a genre they know and love! Links for all of those things are at the bottom!
This is a list of Dark Cabaret (and Dark Cabaret inspired or mixed with) projects! My ratings are as honest as can be though, probably prett
^ This includes a couple of artists that hold some controversies that I'm not 100% about supporting, though due to their impact on the scene, I have a playlist including a couple of their songs.
^^ This playlist excludes those artists and is a more straight example of the "Dark Cabaret" sound!
As always, I love any feedback! Have fun exploring!
Responsibility, Arrogance, Tolerance. A Dresden Dolls essay from a black girl.
On July 20th, 2022, I was confronted with the shocking consequence of my actions. That day I left a comment below one of the Dresden Dolls posts. The post was a poster for one of their upcoming return tours and in response, I commented a hilarious and creative comment that showed my excitement for this announcement and the love I had for the duo.
Nineofmee: "Big day for racists!
In a SHOCKING turn of events, I was banned from their Instagram account, and still feel this sting to this day....."Why did I do that?" I thought. "What did I learn from this experience?" I questioned...
"How should I feel about the Dresden Dolls?"
The Dresden Dolls, Pioneers of the dark cabaret/punk-cabaret scene in the early 2000s, were represented by Amanda (fucking) Palmer and Brian Viglione. The two of them performed for many years and released two full-length LPs an EP and live albums galore. The duo frequented hiatus for personal and career purposes causing their activity as the Dresden Dolls to be far and in between, but in 2020 when they officially announced their reunion and are currently playing shows all around. The social climate they left in the 2010s would not be one they'd return to in the 2020s because something shifted when it came to the Dresden Dolls name; something they didn't have an abundance of before that they now have.
A spotlight.
"Plus my only natural talents wasted on my alcoholic friends.."-The Dresden Dolls.
TikTok is a double-edged sword. Through all the corruption and bad media overstimulation that the brains of millions around the world experience, the app allows once unheard-of artists to be readily available and gain some traction, boosting their careers. This is exactly what Amanda and Brian found themselves benefiting from. My Alcoholic Friends spread like wildfire on a specific side of the app and introduced many people to the Dresden Dolls.
Not far after, another Amanda Palmer project gained traction around TikTok to...let's call it "mixed reviews", and from this many people got more interested in the question of who Amanda Palmer was outside of the Dresden Dolls, and up from the depths of the internet came;
WARNING! I WILL BE GOING INTO OLD AND ACKNOWLAGED CONTROVERSIES HERE! GIVE ME A SECOND TO EXPLAIN WHY I BRING THIS UP!
"Fuck the police comin' straight from the underground A Young n**** got it bad 'cause I'm brown And not the other color so police think..."-N.W.A
N.W.A, a hip-hop group from Compton, California sings about police brutality from the perspective of being African-American men in America...and Amanda Palmer also sings along for some fucking reason. It was in 2009 when Amanda Palmer started to perform these ukelele covers and at the time apparently; she was not aware she should probably not say the N-word as a white woman? Amanda Palmer has a long statement on her blog apologizing for her arrogance surrounding the use of this racial slur, but here's where I want to flip this post to be a little less of an essay and more of a personal statement.
As a black woman, I do not forgive her arrogance.
Amanda Palmer has apologized and I'm not asking for anything with this post here, I'm just simply conceptualizing my feelings. Amanda Palmer in a video interview talks about her feelings about being flamed on the internet and her feelings on "Radical Compassion" What is Radical Compassion? Well, it is the idea that "even in the moment when you strongly disagree with someone (ect...) you have to approach every last motherfucker with a massive dose of compassion knowing that they're just as human as you..." Kindly, I think this excuse to deflect full responsibility. Even in her blog she says and "this is to remind you that nothing progresses within a vacuum, that we are in a relationship. we are a unit, you and me.." If this isn't to shame her audience or deflect blame then, why bring up other people in your apology? Also, Amanda Palmer is notorious for not hearing people out in her career, standing on her opinions as strong as a cement pole. I will forever continue to acknowledge their music, their history, their impact on my life, but I don't think it is fair to be asked to not be angry about this. If Amanda Palmer didn't understand it's impact then why did she add it to her song Guitar Hero where she uses it in a derogatory to prove a point about how much the word weighs? If Amanda Palmer didn't understand it's impact why would she change the inflection of the word from an "a" suffix to an "er" suffix? How punk and non-racist are you if you don't think and reflect on that maybe a little bit. Black people aren't here to educate you on what you should and shouldn't be saying, google it. Lear history. Use your privilege. Don't be arrogant.
What does this have to do with The Dresden Dolls?
Amanda Palmer is half of the band, I support the band I support Amanda. I don't want to directly finance her, but i struggle to ignore her importance to me. She was someone really important to me but, i am so sick of being told by people to forgive them for mistakes surrounding my race, my person, she's aware of her actions, she isn't a child. 2015 was the last time she performed this cover and embarrassed herself in front of her fans. It isn't OUR JOB to educate you. That, in a whole is where I stand.
Thanks for reading this and, please comment any comments that pop in to your mind! I love to further conversations and challenge my own opinions! In the words of Amanda Palmer; "I talk, you listen. We're a unit," except I'm not saying slurs I shouldn't say and trying to deflect the blame.

Dark Cabaret and the Circus
Throughout my years of listening to Dark Cabaret music, there is an undeniable and large elephant in the room, though this elephant is not so much a problem as it is just, cool and standing there.
The Dark Cabaret aesthetic is built on a couple Ideas; 1920's vaudeville, Burlesque, and the post WWII Weimar styles. The energy that is depicted in these traits are the key identifiers but, through some of these things there is another very strong indicator of the "Dark Cabaret" style.
Dark Circus. What is the difference really? Both have a love for dark stripes, morally grey themes, and themes surrounding performance and theater, and are just so cool! The reason I am making this post is just to point out some sound differences depending on the type of cabaret person you are. The genre, though so mixed already, is even more specific once you get into the bottom of the barrel (as I would say I have.)
Dark Cabaret music on its own has a very mellow beat pattern. Typically having lyrics that are related to the aesthetics of the music, stories from history, darker lyrics about life and death, sex and love, and many other things.
Then there is the aesthetics of Dark Circus that get thrown in the mix. These elements bring in a much more comedic tone to the music. Lots of bells and whistles and horns and laughter can be heard in these numbers. They're typically quite absurdist in their messaging and have quicker tempos to level with the wild energy these numbers put out. The Dark in the term is found in the lyrics of the music, or the aesthetic of them. A real pioneer in my opinion for this genre meshing is Emilie Autumn with her Circus aesthetic and Cabaret music mixing and bringing a whole other energy to the sub-culture.
To reiterate, this post isn't negative or trying to be snobby I am just so fascinated by this little music genre and love to analyze the how and the whys!
KABARET SYBARIT
Genesis's #1 Positive Burden: Kabaret Sybarit.
When people ask me what the sound of "Dark Cabaret" is I always point to Kabaret Sybarit first.
Probably most known for their iconic song "Rattlesnake," Kabaret Sybarit was a Dark Cabaret band from Denmark that began making music in 2009. The band consisted of seven members. The vocals are most known to be from Kirsten Bjerregaard featured on both "The Poodle" EP as well as "The Grand Finale" EP but vocals are also taken up by the band's Martin Klein SĆørensen whose vocals influence their sound in their only full-length EP "Akt: 1 Rum nr. 13."
All together with the other amazingly talented band members, the band performed these pieces with wonderful gusto, aesthetic, wit, and comedy. Earning them a spot as (in my humble opinion) one of the most perfect Dark Cabaret bands ever. Though they have disbanded since, Mathias still works on music and lurks on the internet, appreciating support when the band is mentioned and many songs have found their way into different fanbases for their villainous energy and fun sound!

ABOUT ME! <3
Heavenly Hellos & Hellish His, My name here is Genesis Burden! I am a twenty-year-old (She/Her) performing artist pursuing a career in musical theater. While I fill my brain with musical notes and monologues I spend a lot of time listening to music and engaging with like-minded music fans of those genres which brings me here;
Dark Cabaret has been my favorite music genre and my acute fixation for many many years. I always strive to introduce people to the genre to experience the fun and potential in this music style and aesthetic! My efforts are more subtle than I wish they be, unfortunately. Though, I'm going to keep trying when I can (and feel up to it). Stay tuned for my next posts for I will be introducing my favorite Dark Cabaret artists and also explaining a bit about my personal "criteria" for the Dark Cabaret sound. (I'm not a snob just annoying).
Have a lovely day angels and devils! <3
Dark Cabaret Brain time
I'm back! I am in such a big Dark Cabaret mood again so, please let me welcome people here!
What is Dark Cabaret?
A musical style inspired by the theaterical entertainment of the specifically 1920ās inspired cabaret with darker infusions of gothic, punk, and rock genres.
The term for this music wasnāt really picked up by any particular artists until an album compiling different songs that fit what is now considered the standard tone for the style was released
This was the first known project that considered the music to be āDark Cabaret.ā
The most frequently pointed at artists coining the term and, honestly birthing the genre as we know it is the one and onlyā¦
Amanda āFuckingā Palmer
more-so, The Dresden Dolls.
Amanda Palmer and drummer Brian Viglione are the two who, in the early 2000ās Boston, created the Dresden Dolls. The Punk Cabaret band stapled what is now recognize as the sound and style of Dark Cabaret bands. Their emergence inspired other bands to recognize their similarities in sound and changed the name of their sound to be on of punk/dark cabaret.
The genre really thrived in the early 2000ās with artists like The Tragic Tantrum, Emilie Autumn, Jill Tracey, Jason Webley, and many others really making their marks in their musical communities.
In recent years mire and more bands appear to contribute to thus niche genre and more and kore older bands get more recognition!
My hope with this account is to keep more eyes on the dark cabaret scene and keep its relevancy in the music scenes!
Iāve been trying to find a subculture in which I truly feel like I belong for years now. I never found a comfortable groove within the emo fanbase, I felt uncomfortable in some metal communities, and I knew that I was a fan of things that made me feel like I just wasnāt meant to be wishing these cultures.
Then it randomly came to me. I knew I was such a fan of theatrical aesthetics in music and I loved gothic aesthetics and the musical subculture that Iāve always been with connected to is theā¦
