A day in London.
How to be a UKRN?
I know there are a lot of Filipinos who are aspiring to be UKRNs. Let me help you in my best way possible. I was interviewed by my trust last December 2017. I started the whole processing Jan 2018 and flew here to the UK this January 2019. It may vary with every candidate but we will all get here in His right time.
1. Take IELTS (International English Language Testing System)! It is an examination required for individuals who want to work in a country like United Kingdom where English is the main language of communication. It is also needed for immigration purposes, when you apply for your visa. You have to get an OBS of 7.0, with no scores less than 7.0 except on writing which is 6.5.
2. Ace that CBT (Computer Based Test)! This is a 120 multiple choice questions which is part 1 of the Test of Competence by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This examination is intended for nurses trained outside the European Union and European Economic Area who wants to land a nursing job in the UK.
3. Pass your documents to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, wait for your Decision Letter. A list of necessary documents are to be submitted to the NMC for verification, this includes college diploma, PRC certificate, sets of forms to be filled out by PRC and your college, etc.
4. Once you receive your decision letter, time to have your TB test and Medical Exam. Since I live in the province, I have to travel all the way to Manila to have my TB test in IOM, they are the only accredited center for this exam and this is one of the requirements you need to submit in your visa application later on.
5. If everything’s okay with your examinations then waiting game for Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) begins. In my case, it just took 2 days before I got mine. My trust has available COS that time so I need not to wait any longer unlike others.
6. Exam’s done. DL and COS ready. Time to apply for UK VISA. Since I already took my IELTS UKVI, it saved a lot of my time and money. In other cases, some would opt to take the OET and regular IELTS so before proceeding to the visa application they have to take the IELTS UKVI and score a OBS of 4.0 which is not bad. List of documents will be submitted as well in the visa center, one is located in Manila and the other one in Cebu. This time you have to leave your passport with them because they will be needing a page for your visa to be imprinted on.
7. All set. Time to go to UK. Once you reach UK, you have to prepare for the last examination which is the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). This works like the return demonstration we had when we were in college, the only thing is we have to deal with real patients, and we have to follow the standards of nursing in the UK. Don’t you worry, your trust will help you with this one. Luckily, my trust has an overseas team who looks after each overseas nurses all throughout our journey here in the UK.
Tip: Try to know in which place you want to work, if you want to be near or in Central London, consider the high cost of living and the crowd, but if you want to be in the countryside then there are lots of options. There are various agencies in the PH which will guide you with your UK journey, just please make sure that these agencies are POEA accredited.
Going here was never easy, you have to make lots of sacrifices and you have to endure all the hardships but it’s gonna be worth it. Tip, better know which area you will be assigned to once you get here for you to prepare yourselves. I’m a bit sad actually that I was not put in the recovery room because I have worked in PACU for the past 3 years of my nursing career in the PH. When I got here I was just grateful in a way that I have to learn how to work in the wards because it will help me become more passionate, more knowledgeable, more competent and more endearing. It’s a much different scenario when I was still in the wards back in the PH, I can tell. Everyday is a struggle but you learn to appreciate life even more. Just work hard, do whatever you have to do, take care of your patients dearly and pray to Him cos He will bever really leave you, trust me.
You can send me messages if you have any queries, I will be much willing to answer them,
See you here in UK soon!
