While the total card volume in 2017 was lower than last year - the creativity and quality of the cards continues to impress us. Thanks to all who took a little time to make our holiday special this year!
In terms of overall volume - in 2017 we received the lowest number of holiday cards (31) since 2014 - a year over year decrease of 21%.
As a reminder - we group the cards we receive into 1 of 4 groups:
A) Cards with pics of Kids Only
B) Cards that show the Entire Families with kids
C) Personalized Cards, but without any kids
D) Non-personalized Cards
Here’s what our final card wall looked like in 2017:
The major trends we noticed this year include the following:
- The obvious decrease in overall volume. Perhaps the improved economy made people busier? Perhaps we were worse friends in 2017?
- Kids Only was the only card group with an increase (11%), roughly back to 2015 levels. The fact is that Holiday Cards remain one of the most popular ways to show off your kids.
- While all other card groups saw a +20% decrease, Non-personalized cards fared the worst with a 47% decrease - dropping to third place among the groups. Facilitated by access to cheap, customization from online print technology (and the ability to store mailing addresses from previous years) today it is easier to personalize your holiday card than not.
While we really liked all the cards, our favorites this year stood out for their creativity.
For example Paris & Kristin sent a card that chronicled their year by Bike.
And everyone thought the fair princess card by the Conovers was super cute.
We also like the family card by the Carolls, most notably for many pictures inside the fold that detailed what looked like an amazing year.
But our favorite card this year goes to Emily and Nick for the humorous Elf themed card. This is the second time Emily has sent the year’s favorite card - the last time was in 2014.
Thanks to everyone who sent us a card this year. We are hoping for improved results in 2018!
